Rob, I love these interviews. I love how you don't overstay your welcome with these RUclips videos. I always come away laughing and having learned something.
As a not especially chatty person I've always been fascinated by people like Jools. He could talk for his country. Rob could have popped out of the studio, gone to the bathroom, got a coffee and Jools would still be chatting away when he got back ☺
I was on holiday in greece in a tiny village in the 70's . Tourism had just arrived and there was a mix of young cool people like myself and families. Since it was so small everybody soon knew everybody else and the atmosphere was really good. Then Glenn Tillbrook of Squeeze turned up and he was an impressively nice man, got the guitar out occasionally and fitted in welll with the rest. I always wondered about his relationship with jools and was very pleased to hear that its very good. Nice to heat about the model railways as well.
Fantastically interesting interview. Jools is so talented, his live shows with his brilliant orchestra are always amazing , as are his special guests. Wish he would make his song The Quiet Man available. Heard it live and it was superb. So sad I can’t hear it again,
Jules did 'Jules Hollands Big Night Out' which was a cabaret show really, shot in the Astoria in London for B Sky B every Monday night for a few months in the late 80's. It was pretty good.
Rob is correct, the popular band is called 'Eagles' because there was already another American R&B band called 'The Eagles' who enjoyed a small amount of success in the 50s.
Yes I found this out about 2 years ago, because I was researching the Early Elvis Presley songs and found out that a tune called “ Trying to get to you “ and you can hear similarities in both versions, yes even Elvis copied vocal styles . A must listen.
Love Jools and was lucky enough to go to Later to see Primal Scream and others many years ago... But can't help but think of Adam and Joe's brilliant and affectionate impression of him every time I hear him speak 😁
i'm so charmed to hear that Squeeze were terrified by New York on landing also, I'm remembering walking around Soho in the mid-80s, worked at the Kobal Collection at the time, listening to Singles on 45 on my Walkman and am watching this interview and thinking I am properly old also it was always The Eagles. Consolation: it's not The Journey.
The Young Ones was how i first saw Jools. Now i tune in to his NYE hootenanny on telly esch year, since not going out raving when the bells ring anymore
I did see Jools on a you tube clip about horse riding. He made an impromptu fly by on a bicycle, i'm quite sure it was him donned in an overcoat, gave a wave and bid the girls a good morning. A very stylish kind of guy.
RB you captured the essence of travel, the US and life in the 70/80's : there was "mystery and distance". 7.00 And now what do we have the complete reversal.
There's the story that Glenn Frey tells of explaining to Steve Martin the exclusion of 'the' and that Steve tells him that people are just gonna end up calling them 'The Eagles'...
7" of Cool For Cats was the second proper record I ever bought (1979 - incredible year for music!). I only recently learned that Paul Carrick did vocals (and keys I presume) on 'Tempted', one of Squeeze's best although I've seen Tilbrook do a very decent job of the vocals as well.
Squeeze had to be renamed in US, Canada and Australia and records launched under an amended name of UK Squeeze because there had already been a previous Ozzy and US bands named Squeeze or similar. Correct me if I'm wrong, no issues with that. Brilliant band. Brilliant man in Jools Holland. Great choice for this series. Talented, artistic and intelligent.
Bit random but i put a picture up of my cat looking cool on a chat work site and literally half an hour ago someone replied cool for cats by squeeze 😺 great interview and loved the tube back in the 80s.
I remember going to the Nashville rooms,in Fulham, west London,& saw Squeeze supporting the police,Roxanne had just been released,was,21 at the time, good days.
Looking on Discogs, seems most the records put out is simple "Eagles". But there are records like the 1980 "Spotlight Special Presents The Eagles" which has 'The' prefix. Amd 1976 release on 'Asylum Records - W 53051', it's "The Eagles - Hotel California" actually written on the record sleeve. Similarly with the 1973 record of 'Lynn Anderson / The Eagles* - What's It All About'. On the record label it reads "The Eagles". So can see where confusion can come, Jools may well be recalling in his minds eye one of those labels/sleeves, ao correct also. I had no idea, just found it interesting so checked some images out of records on Discogs and thoguht would add comment
From Wikipedia - "Steve Martin a friend of the band from their early days at The Troubadour, recounts in his autobiography that he suggested that they should be referred to as "the Eagles", but Frey insists that the group's name is simply "Eagles".'
The Bee Gees were originally Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees. Then the 2nd was "The Bee Gees." But the first best of was "Best of Bee Gees," so make your own minds up. Eagles first album is "Eagles." The second is "Eagles Desperado." I will now call Rob, "The Brydon."
Am I write in thinking that initially Cream were known as The Cream & latet dropped the definite article . I think that they were the first band to do so .
To Bee Gee or not to be, The Bee Gees. This is mixed. Their first album was sans the "The," in the UK and for some US pressings, and yet for the same album in Japan and other markets, the "The" was prominent on the cover and in promotional material. The Bee Gees - Sing & Play 14 Bee Gees Classics (2018) features the "The."
The Tube was great, partly because it was so bad 😜 or live and "anarchic" as it would be pitched today. Essential Friday viewing as an undergrad! Vic Reeves and Alexei Sayle, et al. Loved it.
Is Eagles n The Eagles not dissimalar to piranha n piraña (see Kermode / Christopher Lee)? 3 out of 4 remain. We must have a winner... Top one Nice one
I’m a 72yo Australian. The Bee Gees were always The Bee Gees. Even on Brian Henderson’s Bandstand ( Channel9, 5 00pm, Saturday) when Barry was 14 and the other two were 12. Brian went on to read the news in Sydney for about 50 years.

Rob you've done it again. Jools is such a nice chap and Walking to New Orleans is a must-see.
@14:04 "Thelonious Monk". I wonder if he went by Lonious Monk or The Lonious Monk
I was on holiday in greece in a tiny village in the 70's . Tourism had just arrived and there was a mix of young cool people like myself and families. Since it was so small everybody soon knew everybody else and the atmosphere was really good.

Jools is the bestest ever, love him ❤
Excellent episode!
Brilliant! Later was obviously the main inspiration for Jazz Club on The Fast Show .
Rob, one of your best. Thank you.
This took me ages to watch because I kept having to look things up and watch old clips. A trip down memory lane
That was brilliant 👏 👌
What an incredibly relaxed person Jools Holland is, great interview by Rob Brydon - nice change
Fantastically interesting interview. Jools is so talented, his live shows with his brilliant orchestra are always amazing , as are his special guests. Wish he would make his song The Quiet Man available. Heard it live and it was superb. So sad I can’t hear it again,
It's been a delight!
Cheers the pair of you. 😊

Love Jools and was lucky enough to go to Later to see Primal Scream and others many years ago... But can't help but think of Adam and Joe's brilliant and affectionate impression of him every time I hear him speak 😁

Had the pleasure of meeting JH and what a pleasure it was.
Enjoyed that - thanks 👍🏼😀
The Young Ones was how i first saw Jools.

Commented without expressing how much I LOVE Squeeze.
It's The Police. I love the Young Ones. On his show I loved when Tom Jones and Rhianna Giddons did St James Infirmary.
❤ this jools is really intresting person i watched it 3 times now
Nice to hear Hiram Bullock mentioned.
I did see Jools on a you tube clip about horse riding. He made an impromptu fly by on a bicycle, i'm quite sure it was him donned in an overcoat, gave a wave and bid the girls a good morning. A very stylish kind of guy.
Jools I love your Train Set 🎉🎉
RB you captured the essence of travel, the US and life in the 70/80's : there was "mystery and distance". 7.00 And now what do we have the complete reversal.
If only Jools would come out of his shell a bit.......
First single released by the Police had "The Police" on the cover image.
Just googled, and you are right. Eagles are just called Eagles
I looked on Wikipedia. Yup. Eagles.
I find it surprising people don't know this even if they still add the "The"
There's the story that Glenn Frey tells of explaining to Steve Martin the exclusion of 'the' and that Steve tells him that people are just gonna end up calling them 'The Eagles'...
@pluribus_unum
You'd have had to go around the preposterous algorithm and whatnot by typing in one of their tracks title first...
It was The Police - I just checked the album sleeves 🙂
7" of Cool For Cats was the second proper record I ever bought (1979 - incredible year for music!). I only recently learned that Paul Carrick did vocals (and keys I presume) on 'Tempted', one of Squeeze's best although I've seen Tilbrook do a very decent job of the vocals as well.
Jools played the piano solo on The The’s Uncertain Smile, genius
Is it The The or just The? 😀
Neither; it's The The The.
@@rtatt1 This has the potential to get out of hand! 😄
Jools is a character, that was cool. What’s going on Rob!!!
The group I remember making a big fuss about not being prefixed with “The” was “Eurythmics”…
Or “The Eurythmics” as they were better known.
Squeeze had to be renamed in US, Canada and Australia and records launched under an amended name of UK Squeeze because there had already been a previous Ozzy and US bands named Squeeze or similar. It is "The Police" and "Eagles"
Buzzcocks.
The Jools Holland 😆
Thelonius Monk was often referred to by his wife as Melonius Thunk.
Very organised hair today Rob.

They only dropped the definitive in hot weather so as not to spoil!?!
It is Eagles .
I always thought jools's bass player was Nicholas Cage undercover

And yet doesn't appear after the 14...
Bee Gee are also Barry Gibb's initials.
Carpenters is one. Bangles is another one though later albums have The Bangles.
The Tube was great, partly because it was so bad 😜 or live and "anarchic" as it would be pitched today. Essential Friday viewing as an undergrad! Vic Reeves and Alexei Sayle, et al. Loved it.
The Rob Brydon and The Jools Holland
Squeeze, for some reason, down here in New Zealand, were known as UK Squeeze.
Got me wondering about the band The The now.
@@wordsSHIFTminds Now i'm really wondering about them.
@@wordsSHIFTminds The British Legion Compere in Accrington Stanley introduces them as The the The and who can argue with that!?!
Doesn’t he ever pause for breath?
What about The The?
Same thing with the Pistols, who are almost universally referred to as "*The* Sex Pistols". Probably because of "Never Mind the Bollox...".
6:37 Basically, the Young Ones.
You were going to ask him something about The Police. What????
And Jools didn't even have time to mention his association with Sir Paul.
The Sir Paul!?!
@@TomTomicMic Yes Tom. The very Sir Paul !
One of the few podcasts were Rob didn't need to talk at all. Apart from crucial Eagles clarification.
And the correct name for The The is
..and no boogie-woogie joanna!

it's The Police

EAGLES is correct
glad he lost the beaver
Real substance here. Makes up for some rather vacuous offerings lately.
I'm sure everyone working there is relieved you might be slightly happier.
Good.
ADHD
Sounds quite pompous to me tbh. Thought I would be entertained and delighted :(
He forgot to bring his big band, wadya want!?!
TRUMP 2024
@pluribus_unumyou’re lost. Groveller.
Is that a colloquialism!?!
Glen Fry from the horse's mouth Eagles on an interview ❤
