  • Recently I've been having a problem with my passenger window Switch not working. I found a video online showing this trick so I wanted to test it myself. This repair works on 2007 - 2013 Silverado/Sierra and might work on similar switches if they have the same style connectors. Hopefully this quick fix can save some time and money!

    Great video. Another good practice is to wipe it down really well with isopropyl alcohol because it evaporates so you don't have to worry about moisture getting stuck in your circuits... but it cleans all corrosion really well. I'm a military-trained miniature electronic repair specialist and we did months of soldering and order to remove corrosive flux and other materials we always use isopropyl alcohol to clean it really well when we were done.. using an acid brush... trim the bristles for a firmer brush.

    Awesome tip. I agree on the pencil eraser. The best eraser though is the more gritty ink eraser which is difficult to find, but a pencil eraser will work as well. Just follow the tip in the video and your driver door switch for the front passenger window will work perfectly. Thanks for this video! Saved me a trip to the dealer.

    As I am EXTREMELY fond of telling my friends - You Tube is our friend.....and this particular repair fixed an issue with my 2013 Silverado. My passenger side window was misbehaving and finally quit last night (staying open 4 inches) during a rainstorm. Of course it quit then. This morning I "You Tubed", found this repair and it worked like it should have been in the General Motors repair guide. Also when I called the local Chevy dealership, I was quoted $243 for the replacement switch. Excellent video and job!!

    I just wanted to give you a shout out. I had the same problem as you and follow your instructions and I'm back in business. The only thing I did differently was use a q-tip from a gun cleaning kit and a little gun solvent to clean the contacts on both the board and the silicone strip. I followed up with using a flat-head screwdriver to lightly scrape some corrosion off. Afterward, I wiped them down and lightly applied some WD40 with another q-tip. I put everything back together and now both of the passenger sides work like new. Thanks for posting your video. :-)

    I have had this problem for about 7 months, it was driving me crazy. Sometimes I could get the passenger side window down but it wouldn’t always go back up. I would continually press the driver side controls to get it to come up once I got it down. Sometimes it wouldn’t come up at all. I was fed up and just about to call someone to fix it. I stumbled upon your video, looked pretty easy. 15 minutes later, window is working! Easy to follow and best of all I could actually SEE EVERYTHING you were doing. Amazing RUclips.

    • @JohnVesely

      Camilo Santana Dielectric grease is nonconducting. A conductive grease would be better.
      And definitely use a pencil eraser.
      I just now did this and it worked like a charm.

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  6 лет назад +6

      Dielectric grease would prevent any shorts while providing a barrier to the elements. That’s why you use it for head light bulbs during installation.

    • @CamiloSantana
      @CamiloSantana 6 лет назад +7

      technically dielectric grease is an insulator yes... but it isn't going to stop a connection. you can test this out in a million scenarios. what it does is prevent future oxidation. i've already finished and it's working fine.
      i use dielectric grease on everything to seal out water and prevent corrosion. the grease moves out of the way in any physical interaction between connectors and doesn't cause any shorts. were it conductive, that would be a nightmare.

    Thank you. Years later this is still helping. I have a 2009 LMM Diesel with the folding mirrors. The switch replacement is all-in-1 and cost over $150 plus the cost to program. All windows worked except the driver-side would not go down (not sure about up). I tried this method, pulled it all apart and didn't see anything corroded. I figured I would use the eraser trick mentioned elsewhere for cleaning it off. Erased a few gold metal dots and put the case back together. Connected to the truck before reinstalling everything and tested. HOLY CRAP IT WORKED. Thanks for the video and thanks to the eraser comments.

    My driver side front window just started being balky a few days ago. I had no idea this is the way these switches were made. They are almost identical to the key fob that I took apart a couple of years ago, did the little clean up process, and it works like new. I probably would have broken something trying to get to the switches, so that tip about getting the pull handle taken off is worth about a couple of hours of time, and most likely a few thousand cuss words. Not to mention replacing the trim piece!!! Good presentation.

Two days ago with 20° weather out my nephew hits the back window button and rolls the window half down. Normally the replacement switches were costing around $69, I actually saw one onwest.com and ordered it for like $26. I can't thank you enough! This solved a problem that's been going on with my truck for a little over a year now!

    I have 2011 silverado. Same problem you had with your pickup.
    I did exactly what you did. Fixed the problem. I can operate the passenger side window, from the driver's side. Thanks a bunch👍

    Awesome! Worked great. Applied the same idea to the passenger and rear door window switches, which were even easier to remove and clean. Thanks for the post!

    Thank you for the vid, you just saved me a pile of money. Here in Canada, they charge between $110 & &125/hour plus the part because I know they would have changed the whole unit. I watched another mechanic on RUclips fix the same problem and the first thing he did was order the whole unit instead of cleaning the contacts. Thanks again.

    Appreciate this video and the commenters that suggested a pencil eraser! Broke my driver side door handle on my new to me ‘11 Silverado and only the driver side window would roll up from the driver side, all would roll down. The passenger side switch would roll the passenger window down but not up, the rear switches work fine.
    Cleaned the contacts with the eraser when I pulled the door apart to fix the handle and all the windows work now! lol
    Just need to get the rear speakers back working and she’s right off the showroom floor!

    JV Garage this was an excellent video! I have a 2011 Sierra with 250K km and your "How To" video on taking the switch out and cleaning the important parts kept me on the straight and narrow. The entire area was very dirty and benefitted from a total damp cloth wipe down. I ended up taking the entire door piece that the switch sits in so I could clean that too - of note the harness plug for the door lock switch first has a horizontal sliding clip that has to come out first (I suspect it's there to cover some exposed wiring that's energized when the truck is off) followed by the vertical clip that releases the lock switch itself (I had to work it back'n forth but it came off). I doubt that part of the door has been that clean since not long after leaving the factory. Another thing I did was sprayed electrical contact cleaner over the plug pins and window switch contacts both on the circuit board and on the silicone cover and let it all dry thoroughly for about 30 minutes to take care of any grease/oil that I couldn't see. Then I rubbed the contact areas with a clean shop towel followed with light scraping from a small flathead. It was very satisfying putting it all back together and seeing how smoothly the rear passenger window went down and up with the window switch. Thank you for making this video!

    I just bought a used 2011 Sierra, a sound truck overall but one problem was the front passenger window switch from the master set of 4 had pooped the bed, I figured I'd got to a U-pull yard for a new used switch console, but I googled the problem and voila! 20 minutes work in my front yard, didn't even get my hands dirty. Merci Beaucoup!

    Thank you for the tutorial. Fixed mine in 10 minutes. Used the pencil eraser trick rather than scraping with a screw driver. Now all windows work perfectly.

    Excellent video. I had the same problem with my 2016 Chevy Traverse - passenger window not working. I purchased a replacement switch for $25 on Amazon, had the part in 2 days, took about 20 minutes to replace it. Works great so I was feeling good for cheating the dealership out of a $120 repair, then I watched your video.
    ☹️
    Great video. I have two more older vehicles so I’ll probably get another shot at it.

    Thank you so much. This was the first video I watched on this issue. My 2013 GMC Sierra started having problems with rear passenger side window. Last week the passenger side wouldn't roll down, but would click. I used a pencil eraser and cleaned up corrosion on contacts.

    Thanks, this absolutely WORKS! I found my front 2 windows were not reliably going up or down, and I didn't want to get stuck with windows that weren't reliable. The whole process on the driver switch assembly took maybe 30 minutes and I took my time. Saved me a lot of money!

    Thanks alot for this video !!! You saved me $25 plus tax or more because 2 of my switches were not working. Only took me a bit of time . My '09 GMC had this issue. What you showed me worked perfect... Back window was driving me nuts also , with the same problem. Now all my windows work. Yay !! 🍻

    On mine the little white piece under the lever that pushes down to let window down was broken. It was doing exactly what your window was doing though. I ended up just buying switch which I found on Amazon for about 15 bucks. Great Video... Thanks!

    This actually works, realistically takes about 5-10 minutes, and I used a knife to clean the contact instead of a flathead. The screwdriver wasn’t quite small enough in my case. Thanks for posting!
