Just a note to all who are interested in the LG Gram. The finishing on the laptop is not good, especially the deck. I have several paint spots wearing out on my black 14 inch 11th gen, getting very rough. So given a choice, I might go with the white one instead. Loving the weight and rest of the package though

For those interested LG Glance works on 2021 LG Gram, as tested on my 17Z95P You need to unlock the camera, if it's is "secure mode" -then all features of Glance work. This works as an alternate to Logitech "Flow" on the MX Master 3 and 3S Mouse. Works really well!

The first 2022 Gram review I've found ... thank you! I'll be looking forward to your full review. A question in the meantime ... previous editions of the Gram have been knocked for their poor sound quality ... any improvements in that regard?

Intel Alder Lake can (unfortunately) use up to 64 W of power (but LG could have limited this). I'd be interested in the boost behaviour in everyday usage (file management, browsing, RUclips etc.) and how audible the fan reacts to that. Does the BIOS have an option to limit the CPU's power states?

Tried out this portable display with my iPad. Thought I’d share initial thoughts for anyone else considering this setup.
The setup is iPad Pro 11 inch (M1 chip, iPad OS 16.6) and LG Gram+View (model 16MR70).
To test the battery consumption I played a movie for 30 minutes using Infuse Pro. Sound played through the iPad speakers. This was repeated for all of the following tests.
Test 1: Just the iPad (the portable display NOT attached). Brightness set to approx 50%. Result: consumed 3% of the iPad’s battery.
Test 2: iPad with portable display, connected using the cable which came with the portable display. iPad brightness set to 0%, monitor set to 50%. Result: Consumed 18% of the iPad’s battery!
Test 3: iPad with portable display, plus a battery bank connected to the second port of the portable display. Same brightness levels as test 2. The power bank has 10500 mAh capacity. Result: iPad battery gained 5%. The battery bank used 20% of it’s capacity.
    Closing thoughts…
    1. The iPad can power the portable monitor for approx 2.5 hours (with iPad brightness set to minimum, i.e. viewing only the portable monitor). When using both the iPad and portable monitor (i.e. brightness set to 50% on both) I estimate about 2 hours use.
    2. The speakers on the iPad worked even with the portable monitor connected, which surprised me. This was counter to a review I watched which suggested the sound is sent to the portable monitor and therefore muted (because the monitor has no speakers). Not sure why it worked for me. I also tried moving Safari browser to the portable display and played a youtube video, and the speakers continued to work fine.
    3. I havent upgraded to iPad OS 17 yet. Reviews state external monitor support has generally improved, but I can’t comment on that yet. When I upgrade, if the situation with the speakers change then I’ll post a followup comment.
    4. It would be nice if a battery bank could be connected to the portable display and only power the portable display - however when connected it immediately started charging the iPad too. Maybe if a lower amperage usb port was used (eg 1 amp instead of 2 amps), the portable monitor would realise it only has enough power for itself, but I haven’t tested this yet.
    5. I was going to test both portable display and iPad set to 50% brightness, but Infuse app automatically dims the iPad after a while. For worst case scenario for battery consumption just add the result of test 1 and test 2. Would probably last marginally longer because the power used for the iPad internals and speakers is being counted twice. Anyway, I estimate consumption to be 3% (iPad) minus 1% (adjustment for speakers etc) plus 18% (portable display), equals approx 20% per half hour.
    6. Other activities (other than playing a video) may get different results. This is just a quick initial test, mainly to see how I’m going to use this setup.
    7. I’ve used the smaller sized iPad for years. But given the improvements to multitasking I think the larger 12.9 inch iPad Pro is really worth considering. In hindsight I think I’d have preferred to go that route. Yes it would be sacrificing 3 inchs (and a second screen), but the iPad Pro is significantly more power efficient, and a higher quality screen too (better colour accuracy, better contrast, higher refresh). Time will tell….
    8. The brightness controls do indeed work, using the physical buttons on the portable display.
    9. I don’t know if yanking the usb cable out of the portable display can cause it issues long term. For now I think I’ll turn it off before disconnecting power (by holding the two brightness buttons for several seconds).
    10. When the battery bank runs out of juice, the portable display does NOT instantly switch to getting power from the iPad. The portable display loses power briefly and reboots, thereby losing all of the window setup. Everything moves back to the iPad and external monitor support has to be re-enabled. Not ideal if expecting to use the power bank AND the iPad’s battery for an extended stint.
Crux. Seems it’s a viable setup, so far….

16:10 is better than 16:9 but it's still too wide for laptop. That's why I'm still using model from 2006. It's Hp Compaq nc6320 with beautiful 15inch, matte, 4:3, 1400×1050 display. Would like to buy a new one but since majority of my drawings/paintings are portrait orientated it is pointless to swap it for 16:9, 16:10 or 3:2. It would be nice if some of those companies give a 4:3 option. There are probably a number of people who would choose 4:3 over other aspect ratios. Anyway I like your reviews teoh.

    • @bojansucevic6310
      @bojansucevic6310 2 года назад

@@fatjoze 3:2 is still more of a widescreen than it's a square screen. Hp Spectre is an amazing looking laptop and probably with a high quality build, but 14inch 3:2 is significantly smaller than 15inch 4:3. It still lacks that one dimension.
There is Lenovo thinkpad version with a 3:2 screen also and maybe dell latitude but i'm not sure.
Anyway, since there are countless number of models made for media consumption, at least that " workstation" models should have a square screen or an option with a square screen.
Maybe LG is going to make a square screen laptop since they released that amazing 16:18 ( or 18:16 it can be rotated) monitor a few months ago.

Hello Teoh, thanks for the review. I have a question. Does the fan turn on frequently when you are in power saving mode? I plan to use it mostly for photo retouching and drawing so I don't need much power but I very much prefer silent machines. How does this compare with last year model, is this more "silent" in similar scenarios? Thank you very much. Also I'd love to see in the future tests of battery life doing common thinks like drawing, photo retouching, office work... ;)

Great review, Mr Teoh Yi Chie. I have been eyeing these things for quite some time as I do freelance writing and a laptop would help me travel more. I know the Dell XPS is more power-packed with features, but is quite heavy and much more expensive. LG gram is lightweight which makes it great for travel. But, it'd be interesting to see whether the Gram 16 handles 4K video editing well, because I also do that occasionally. My current desktop monitor is BenQ SW240, which like the Gram is 16:10. So, it'd be the perfect companion PC. I don't wish to go with 16:9 anymore.
P.S: if possible, can you review the LG gram Touch screen version, the one where you can sketch and paint on screen with a pen; for digital art. Thanks.

@Teoh - Nice heads up. When are you planning to post the full review? Am seriously considering this for my next laptop purchase. In your full review, it will be nice if you can cover the version including discrete graphics with its gameability potential, 16-inch pros n cons versus 17-inch, keypad sturdiness, typing comfort, trackpad quality, webcam quality, screen colour accuracy, overall screen and body sturdiness, typical charging duration from 0 to 100, battery life under different loads, usage scenarios for the +view (say zoom/teams call on main monitor and documents on the +view screen).. essentially stuff required for better productivity. Thanks much.

The review will by up end of this week. Gaming performance even with the discrete graphics card is not good so there may not be much reason to get the model that comes with the graphics card. Full charge is 3 hours. Battery life is about 9 hours. The display is very good.

Thanks, appreciate the quick revert Teoh. My suspicion came true, clear now that the gram lineage is Traveller/ SMB/ productivity oriented and never meant for gaming. Glad to hear positive vibes on the screen. Bit disappointed with 9hrs battery and 3hr charging time. Hope it lasts better with medium brightness, no multimedia editing and just doing regular office/productivity stuff. Also hope the webcam is quality full HD, invariably seen average grainy webcams on laptops. Someone on this section seems to have pointed at poor paint job on the black version that's a bit concerning. What is your view on the overall materials/sturdiness? this would be key for longevity and major concern for what's advertised as thin and light. Also hoping there's good hardware inside for wireless connectivity, given the predominantly WFH situation. On a different note, I'd be interested to know if there's any quality audio hardware inside for richer headphone experience. Looking forward to your review.

There’s no flex when I’m holding it from the corner. And I do that quite often. No issues.
The keyboard top case will flex if you press down hard, but not when typing.
      Display top has more flex.

Having the matte display instead of glossy isn't "nice". It's terrible. You lose those beautiful, vivid, rich, natural-looking colors and replace them with a hazy coating which ruins it. Matte is only better if you work in very brightly lit environment and have no other choice. But even then you lose color accuracy and contrast, so then working with colors isn't preferable.

    • @teohontech7141
      @teohontech7141  2 года назад +4

I prefer not to see my reflections all the time. The hazy coating appears only when there are direct reflections on it. When you have direct reflections on glossy, you get the reflections. A great LCD still looks great. And I'm prefer LCD over OLED despite having reviewed many OLED laptops and tablets over the years.

In it you can clearly see the huge difference in image quality given the same panel. Also, he compared both displays in the dark so your "it only looks hazy in bright light" argument doesn't work here. It ALWAYS looks bad, no matter the lighting.

@@teohontech7141 youtube removed my first reply so I'll try posting it again. No, I don't like looking at my reflections. Perhaps you came from 3000-4000 years ago, but curtains are a thing. You should google them. Not to mention that without them, on a sunny day a matte display is just as unusuable.
"The hazy coating appears only when there are direct reflections on it." nope, that's not how laws of physics work.
Matte coating doesn't just distort light coming from the outside, the same thing happens from the inside, hence why, put side by side, a glossy monitor would always look superior, as is very evident from the video comparison I sent above.
Also, I hate OLEDs, but previous LG Grams had glossy IPS, not OLED.

@@TabalugaDragon As someone who dislike reflections, the 1st second the glossy display appears on Dave2D's video, that's an instant no-go for me. However, I can see that EVE has applied strong anti-reflective coating on the display although Dave did not mention it, otherwise the reflections will have even more contrast.
I use curtains. And I a mix of glossy and matte displays everyday. My main BenQ SW2700PT is matte. iPad Pro and Samsung tablets, Macbook Air are glossy. I have portable monitors that are matte and glossy. Apple does have the best glossy display and that's thanks to their strong anti-reflective coating.
I can see in the Dave's video that the colours and contrast are indeed better. But is it better to the extent that you can call matte display bad? Nope.
As for the fuzzy text shown on the matte screen on Dave's video. I would say there's a problem with that matte display since I don't see fuzzy text on my high-res matte displays.
Anyway, it's good there are options, glossy and matte. Even Apple offers matte for their glossy displays, because there are people who prefer matte. So it seems there are people who are willing to pay higher price (to Apple) to buy lousier quality matte displays.

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon 2 года назад

@@teohontech7141 there is no anto-reflective coating there, the reflections on it were evident to the max.
"Apple does have the best glossy display and that's thanks to their strong anti-reflective coating. " then... why are their screens so reflective? Dave demonstrated it perfectly, they reflect everything when the screen is dark of off, just like any glossy display.
"I can see in the Dave's video that the colours and contrast are indeed better. But is it better to the extent that you can call matte display bad" bad compared to glossy. If you only use matte screen it may look ok. But I recently bought a glossy monitor(I could barely find one) and it's like a dust curtain was removed from it. Bright, colorful, high contrast, blacks are black and not grey anymore, the colors are vivid and natural-looking.
"since I don't see fuzzy text on my high-res matte displays. " I do. I used numerous matte displays in my life and they reflect light exactly the same way as shown in his video(he was filming in a studio), and they are completely unusable on a sunny day without curtains.
Like I said that's just how laws of physics work. You can't just distort light coming from the outside without doing the same with light coming from the inside.
"Anyway, it's good there are options, glossy and matte." do you and I even live in the same universe? No, there aren't any options, for most segments that is. Try finding a glossy display on a budget to mid-range gaming laptop. You know how many glossy options are there? ZERO. Same with desktop gaming displays. I could barely find a glossy display on the market but even that one pretty much a TV-converted-into-a-monitor, not a proper monitor. It's 32 inches and only 1080p resolution(great at watching movies but far from the best for using text), and that's because there are almost no options. It has a decent response time of 5ms and 75hz, but still, I'd prefer a higher pixel density, but it's just not a thing on glossy displays anymore.
And you know why? One of main reasons is because youtubers like you always praise matte coating without mentioning it's downsides. You keep talking about how great it is that a matte display doesn't have reflections and yet fail to mention that you sacrifice image qiality for it. So people blindly go and buy matte displays, many not even knowing that image is not the same on them, despite you making an otherwise impression of it based on your review. As a result, display manufacturers see the lack of interest in glossy displays and have pretty much stopped making them, especially on gaming devices. As a reviewer, it's your obligation to be objective, and mention both sides of the coin, not just the positives.
