At the “finche l’aria e ancor bruna” she quite loses control of her voice. I can tell and I am not even an expert. She may be talented but this was not very good, and she is definitely faking a deeper/darker voice than she actually has, even when this is an aria specifically fit for a light and airy voice. The more I find of modern opera stars the more I turn to the “old guard”. I would not say modern opera is lost and what not, but somehow it is not the better singers getting promoted. Netrebko can act and be sexy on stage, which makes her more commercial. Not what opera should (primarily) be about.

To the extent that the throaty singing approach is something that is institutionalized and taught in school, it does not surprise me. It would allow a young singer to take on meatier roles that they are not yet prepared for, and in the race to get young presentable people on stage, I can see how the madness caught on. It is not a good thing. Oh, and they patched the audio -- before the part I was mentioning surfed so high it made my ears hurt. No need to be an expert for that.
