I literally came here because I couldn't get the humidity perfect for my boa enclosure. I'm new to the hobby so of course Im stressing everything. I know we keep them as pets but sometimes you forget that snakes live in the wild...and weather changes everyday. It's never going to be perfect. As long as they're healthy you're good.
Exactly.. Do what works for you especially if your animals are thriving.. I keep my hot an cool side like you an my retic are fine... Thanks for sharing
Big Breeders are great for the reptile industry for promotion, positivity on a big platform that hopefully brings more people to the reptile industry. I would love to pick the brains of all of them but they are all very busy and you would be lucky to get a response from them on a good day. Every experience is valuable and you bring massive value to anyone that watches your videos. You take the time from your own busy life to read, respond and broadcast to anyone that would like advice from your experience. What you are doing is great and you take the time to explain in detail key issues and questions asked. I would personally like to thank you for your videos and for personal responses to questions I’ve asked. Keep up the great work. 😉
Great video my dude, came just in time as I have recently purchased my first retic. When I picked her up she had some stuck shed. I did my research (which is pretty much on que with what you are saying) and did a soak and sprayed the enclosure a couple times and all is well now. Thanks for this very informative video!
Thanks for this. I am brand new to snake keeping I actually dont have one yet but Im setting up my enclosure and I had definitely started to overthink. I needed this reminder to chill out a bit. My parameters are all pretty good I think Im ready to get my snake!
I own some of Jay's AND Kevin's babies and they are definitely prize animals. You got some beautiful snakes too. You definitely do have some great info and it shows in your animals. You're one of the ppl like Jay and Kevin that I watch for info and when I look at MY snakes you haven't steered us wrong
Steve! Hope all is well! I've heard in a few of your videos you mention Males being to big to breed... Could you make a video going into more detail on that?
Ok I am in need of help.... I have two 4’ Boamaster enclosures and switched bedding to just using paper towels. I normally use natural bedding ( coco fiber bedding mixed with reptisoil and little bit of sand and it worked out great but now that I have switched to paper towels due ease of cleaning and cost their humidity is in the toilet? Should I mist the tanks daily? Add a humid hide to both? And what about the paper towel getting wet? Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks
Ngl, I didnt even pay attention to this video because I read "overthinking is a disorder" to find myself googling and to find a 10 step way to cope with over thinking. It's funny cause I find myself having this "disorder" welp, I find this helpful.
I taped off my vents in my yellow anaconda vivarium the temperature and humidity has never been so stable everything on point thankyou for your information
Good video... I always tell others don’t try to do exactly same thing someone else is doing.. take a Lil from different people and blend that with work best for you
Hi. I know this is a bit of an off topic question and I know this isnt the right place to ask but my retic has recently started to audibly breath. It is quite loud and im not sure if it's an RI. She is about 10ft now but not sure if this is normal for a retic of this size. Sorry and thank you
No sorries needed. Sounds perfectly normal as long as there are no bubbles coming from the mouth. Imagine a, and I'm guessing on size, 2-3 foot lung releasing air out of those tiny nostrils. 😁 Its gonna make some noise. But again, make sure there isn't any liquid discharge or bubbles coming from mouth.
@@sghpest thank you so much for replying. I got really worried about her but I feel better now that someone i know is good at keeping snakes says it ok. I made sure earlier there was no bubbles or discharge so I guess she is fine. Again thank you :)
Great video. I don’t monitor my humidity either! Never had a problem nor do I use vents. People crack me up it’s not rocket science if something is off a little bit so be it. These animals survive in the wild where the variables are way more unstable then in your home trust me!! Keep up the good work Steve!
I'm getting my first retic in a week! I was wondering, what temps do you think would work best for me? My basement fluctuates from 60-70 degrees this time of year. I've heard from some that retics should never be exposed to temps under 75, then I've heard from others that retics enjoy a high temperature gradient and that a cold cold side is good as long as the warm side is correct. Ill be heating the enclosure with a CHE. Does a cold side of around 70-75 sound okay if the hot side stays at a constant 88-90 degrees? Thank You.
Thanks for expanding on that topic. My only point in my other post is that (and this is my opinion only) that hypoxia in snakes is not nearly as easy to see as you say it is. If you were to intentionally suffocate a snake it would take hours and maybe even days due to their low oxygen uptake. It should not even be considered as a humane method of euthanasia as a result of the possible cruelty. I also was not stating as fact that you are causing your snakes to actually be hypoxic, just that closing off vents posses a higher risk... nothing more. That said, you have in your hands the best evidence that you are indeed doing a good job...a healthy snake. At the end of the day, you don’t need much more to move on to a different topic, I will give you that. Like I said, I have learned a lot from your channel which month-in-and-month-out survives my constant downsizing of subscriptions (you even named a few others in this video who have NOT made the cut recently). So I hope you will keep an open mind and try and learn from me as I do from you. Peace be with you, Steve. Take care and “Carry” on...
Hey. Sorry, but what is a spitfire retic? Someone brought this to my attention and I've never heard of it nor seen it nor can find it. Is it an actual morph? They say it's a platinum spitfire, but I know platinum and fire are one in the same and used interchangeably. So. Is it bs? I just finished watching this video.great points. I hate that our world has come to be so literal about every little thing. What happened to the good old days where common sense was more, uh, common. When I first built my enclosure, I didnt have vents whatsoever for the first few months, then I realized my humidity was staying a little to high for to long, so I drilled some holes and made some vents. It's called trial and error. As long as you are willing to improve what you need, then what's to worry about? I'm from mississippi. You and I have damn near 40-70% humidity all the time. So, we dont have to do much to maintain it.
As for the Spitfire, I'm not very familiar with it. I do know that Tim Richie has produced some. He'd be the best to refer to for the answer to that question. And yes, Alabama and Mississippi have NO problem with humidity. Lol. Stifling!

That big water bowl does the job! I dont even watch Kevin anymore since he let those kids take over
Big water bowls are a must. Dont count jeremy short. He is very knowledgeable and doesnt get to shine as much during those videos.

I ended up sealing most of the vents on my AP cages. Helped significantly. There was just too much air flow for my situation.
