    Hey Will! I just wanted to shout out a big thank you for diving into all the details of jewelry Keyshot rendering in this video. You seriously rock! Working together on this collaboration project has been an absolute blast, and I couldn't be happier. I have no doubt that our viewers and students are going to be blown away by the information we provided. Super Thanks!

    A match made in heaven! PJ plus WG - fantastic tutorials on both sides. I came over to Keyshot because PJ used it in one of her demonstrations. For me this collaboration is very inspiring and I am sure it will benefit so many students, on both sides. An excellent tutorial on how to showcase and render shiny metals and diamonds. 💍💍💍💍

    Nice training video. Just a correction at minute 10.04, you state the clean out holes are for light to enter; however, this is incorrect (as the ring is against the finger, no light comes through.) The holes under the gemstones are for cleaning the stones. During repairs, heat is used to repair (traditionally, a torch) and the heat will burn the "dirt" to the gemstones making them dull and lifeless. It is imperative to have incredibly clean metal and gemstones during a repair - hence, the "clean out" holes.

      Thanks for sharing! When I mentioned light penetration, I was thinking more of what's required in the rendering process, more so than IRL. But from a practical standpoint, what you said makes complete sense.

    There's an annoying thing that happens when I activate "Product" mode in the lighting presets: The area under the stones gets orange, even that all the other presets are the same as yours. Do you know why that happens and how to solve it? Thanks in advance!

    • @WillGibbons

      I think this is because of the global illumination. You can try disabling that or reducing the GI bounces.

    Hey Will! Thank you for this tutorial. Dipping my toe in keyshot and your tutorials are really helpful. One question i have after watching the Photoshop part: what exactly does the matting option do? cause i still have a tiny edge around the layers which looks a little bit off.

    • @WillGibbons
      @WillGibbons  10 месяцев назад +1

      Matting should remove a band of white or black pixels that appear around an image that's been rendered with transparent background. You can run it twice on a layer and it might help removing the remaining white pixels. At a lower resolution, it can be difficult to remove completely which is a downside of combining passes. To avoid it entirely is a much more cumbersome process in which you'd have to re-create the rendering by layers in 32 bit mode, which I've demonstrated in one of my videos here: ruclips.net/video/INtXQa5CrsQ/видео.html&ab_channel=WillGibbons%7C3DRendering

    Hi Will, I was wondering if rhino to keyshot is actually a viable toolchain. For a long time I was laboring under the assumption that keyshot can directly ingest CAD data, until following your tutorial I realized that NURBS models get tessalated upon import. And not in a nice way. Your mesh and UV can be infinitely cleaner if you do them in subdiv in a polygonal modeler and unwrap them manually. But it defeats the purpose of using Rhino in the first place. I see in the keyshot gallery that artists do amazing renders but still, this workflow seems broken to me. I'm not sure if plugin renderers like vray do the same. Thanks for your great content anyway.

    • @WillGibbons
      @WillGibbons  7 месяцев назад

      Uhhmm, whether or not it's viable depends on what you want and need of course. KeyShot CAN and DOES directly import CAD data (NURBs). Now, I can't say with 100% certainty, but I don't think any render engine is capable of rendering NURBs data directly. This has to do with the fact that NURBs define surfaces based upon curves that are driven by mathematical expressions, resulting in 'perfect' surface representation. But to efficiently render a 3D model, those NURBs are converted to triangles (called tessellation) in KeyShot's case. However, you CAN enable NURBs rendering in KeyShot. It's not nearly as efficient as rendering triangles, but I think the NURBs surfaces are converted to bezier patches, a somewhat 'CAD' equivalent of triangles in polygonal modeling.
      KeyShot does not support quads and will always produce tris when importing a mesh, but if you do have a clean quad-based topology on a model, that will probably result in more ideal tris in KeyShot.
      I'm not sure if you have a direct question here, but like I said, viability depends on what you need.

    • @metternich05
      @metternich05 7 месяцев назад

      @@WillGibbons Thanks a lot! Not a direct question actually, just a little disappointment that's not directly related to the video. Sorry for going off topic :) I just happened to watch this video recently and it made me think. I was hoping that rhino-keyshot would be my endgame setup for hard surface modeling and product visualization. But it's back to poly I guess. I'm not gonna drop Rhino entirely, and I know that generated poor topology shouldn't be a deal breaker as everyone else is happy with the Rhino to Keyshot render quality, but whenever the mesh is shown in Keyshot it's a total turn off to me. I'm not an engineer so I have no other reason to do NURBS than achieving super clean surfaces. But almost the same thing can be done with a little extra effort in subdiv.

    the diamond looks wrong in my opinion. Some bloom with a small blur radius but quite visible would make it more real. Highlights in a diamond a very bright and when they don’t bloom properly you can see the white triangles way too clearly.
