Now imagine being a lonely, kinda depressed 15 year old with no friends hearing this song back in the 80's.
Realizing that other people feel this way makes it a little bit easier to cope with. And then you meet other loners that like the same band.

The lead singer, James Hetfield, was touring and had just started this band when his mother was dying from cancer. She wanted to leave something with him, so used her money to buy him an extremely expensive wonderful set of amplifiers. After she had passed away, and while he was still grieving, some roadie stole them and it felt like he had just lost the last piece he had of her. That was why he wrote this song. The lyrics are quite profound and bittersweet.

    • @tallycahamuhlhetru26

James' mom died when he was 16. He was 19 when he began dipping his toe into touring in '82.
Amps & drums were stolen. Fortunately, all guitars went inside with them.

@@tallycahamuhlhetru26 I'm sure you're right about the timing, but the point of the song is how the theft brought back that pain again. He has written about his feelings about her passing in other songs, in "The God that failed." It's a deep subject for him is all I meant, whatever the timing. 🙂👍

Listening to his hour long soliloquy at the Guitar place (forget where), he describes the band was in Denmark (due to cheapness of recording studio time) and everyone was deeply homesick. He describes he just poured all those emotions into the solos in this album , so that would translate well to Fade to Black.

Watching the smile fall from your face as you heard the lyrics is absolutely fitting. This song perfectly encapsulates the allure of death to those who are suicidal. It caused quite a stir when it came out as a lot of people took it to be encouraging suicide. It doesn't. Fade to Black is a way for people who are battling to express how they feel, and a way for the people who support them to understand the battle.

One simply could not script this stuff any better. Your enthusiasm and smile in your heart - I knew deep in side that smile was gonna begin to fade....and little by little you realized the depth of the meaning of this song.
This song is precisely why I don't understand why so many people try to get reactioners new to Metallica to check out One as their first intro. This song is so much better to feel and heard the profound meaning and hardcore sound in those riffs.
Jayy - consider for a moment how much in common rap and metal have - people think from the surface it's two different worlds and two different cultures, but back when rap was truly deep like Pac and Biggie and Dre, their songs were deep and meaningful and heavy and carried a profound message, and when you heard it, you really felt it.
Metal heads listen to metal for the same reason. The lyrics are fkn deep and heavy. Both genres help people deal with their personal shit they go through. This song helped so many trouble youth deal with their negative emotions and realize that there are others out feeling as they do, and when those solo kick into drive, that anger and stress is just flooding out of the body just as you let the music take you.
Both genres are respectively the most felt music to teens and young people and it's a combo of the profound lyrics and rhythm/bass. Metal adds one more layer with the angst of the guitars. Both are powerful as hell. I cannot count the number of days I came home from school or work and needed to blow off steam so as to not take it out on people. 20 minutes headbanging in the garage or in my car and swear to god its therapy as good as any on the planet.

Back in the old days no one wanted to truly address mental health issues. Till the heavy metal bands came out. They do music with a dark side personina for a reason. It's meant to help raise awareness. We humans tend to ignore our negative emotions. Or we make fun of them. But they are real and they are apart of us. And they will never go away. The secret to a healthy mind is to learn from both our negative and positive emotions. Learn to channel them.

There are quite a few people here today, because this song helped them deal with their depression and suicidal ideation, at difficult times in their lives. It's counter-intuitive, but people who have been there understand.

I think this was the 1984 metal version of R.E.M`s epic track "Everybody Hurts"...it was meant to pull people back from the edge, the line that once crossed can never be taken back...

    Meaning of this song
The lead singer of the band, James Hetfield, explained that his mother had a hand in helping him pay for an amplifier. Before this album was released his mother passed away and shortly after that amplifier was stolen. “Fade to Black” focuses on a person who has decided the life they are living is not worth the fight.

I've never seen someone cry from listening to metallica on youtube lol it is a very deep song by them. "The Unforgiven" by metallica is similar, and "Wherever I May Roam" different yet very deep song by metallica

James definitely knew pain and loss... I'm glad others are still getting to feel it after all these years (this was my teen years in the late 80s early 90s).

This is an important song. When I was in a real low point in my life it reminded me that others feel this shit too. If they survived it so would I.

Amazing reaction! Metallica are the best at translating emotion into music. For more deep Metallica songs, react to The Unforgiven; Nothing Else Matters; Welcome Home (Sanitarium); Orion (Instrumental); The Outlaw Torn; Bleeding Me ⚡

Best reaction video! I've heard that song about 10.000 times and I was crying with you. Sweet! Impressive how you feel the song immediately! It's nice you get the full sound with those headphones. The first time I heard this was probably on a friend bedroom on his turntable and pretty bad sound. Rock on!
