In this Home Movie from 2003, you can see that after many, many attempts, Ruffell finally managed to pull off a 360 Spin on a Snowboard! Chamonix, France.
Before BMX Teams were a thing in the UK, Andy spent every waking minute he could in Skateparks like ROM and Harrow Skate Park, building a reputation as one of the best park riders anywhere. This was a brand new discipline at the time and he is credited as being one of the first riders in the world to perfect tricks like aerial 360s and giant airs.
After joining the first BMX team in the UK ‘Team Ace’ in 1980 he entered the first BMX race staged in the UK and won, after that, he joined the Ammaco Mongoose Racing Team and went on to win the National Title in 1981. After a trip to Knots Berry Farm BMX race in California, Ruffell was the first European rider to be offered full Mongoose Factory Sponsorship by the legendary Skip Hess. Andy went on to win Two National Titles and Superclass National No.2 plate Riding Team Mongoose. As BMX was exploding worldwide in the early ’80s, Andy also traveled the world for the brand as a ‘Mongoose International Ambassador’ touring countries across Europe, Africa & Australia doing Freestyle shows to large audiences of up to 12,000 people.
In 1984 Andy secured the first Auto brand sponsorship in the UK with Ford and become the face of a national UK campaign called ‘The Ford Challenge’ aimed at teaching kids the basics of BMX Riding. In 1983 Andy received the prestigious ‘Young Cyclist Of The Year’ award from the Minister Of Sport at The Houses Of Parliament for services to BMX.
In 1985 Andy was offered the biggest BMX Sponsorship Contract in UK history when he switched to the UK’s biggest manufacturer ‘Raleigh Bicycles’. As part of the deal, Raleigh launched the ‘Andy Ruffell Team Special’ signature series BMX Bike that went on to sell over 200,000 units. Raleigh also launched the first dedicated BMX national print advertising campaign that featured Ruffell doing crazy stunts like riding a tightrope over the Grand Canyon and jumping 100ft in the air from a Ski Jump in Switzerland (Thanks To Photoshop LOL) During the year he won the National Pro Title, Screen Sport Pro TV Series Title and won more races than any other Professional in the UK. Alongside his racing duties, Andy toured the UK & Europe performing over 100 BMX Freestyle shows.
Andy also developed a significant career in television and hosted 6 series of nationally televised BMX Beat on the UK ITV network, The Tizer World Freestyle Championship (ITV) as well as co-hosting the prestigious Kellogg’s BMX Championship on Channel 4 for two years.
He has appeared in over 400 TV shows in the UK and around the world including two appearances on ‘BBC Superstars’ (20m plus viewers) being the youngest participant ever in the 10-year history of the show. Ruffell also starred in various commercials for ‘Kellogg’s Frosties’ and ‘Ready Brek’.
He’s also the author of the best selling ‘BMX From Start To Finish’ (first published 1984) and even made a BMX record that hit the top 20 in the UK ‘BMX Boys Have A Lot Of Fun’. In 1983 he landed the starring role in ‘BMX The Video’ that was produced by Thorn EMI and sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
Andy Ruffell founded and produced several major BMX events including the British BMX Freestyle Championships and the world-renowned ‘Holeshot’ event, which brought together the world's best BMX riders and Skateboarders for the first time including Matt Hoffman, Christian Hosoi, Denis McCoy, Ron Wilkerson, Brian Blyther, Woody Itson, and Gator Rogowski - the event became the biggest BMX Freestyle show in the UK from 1983 - 1987.
