Bear Charge, Bear Spray Used

  • READ DESCRIPTION BEFORE MAKING WILD SPECULATIONS:
Black bear charge during trail run.
In July 2020, during a long trail run in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness in western Colorado, I spotted two bear cubs climbing a tree in front of me. Luckily, I saw them before the sow- who was behind them- saw me. When she heard the commotion she came charging up the hill in my direction, but she couldn’t see me crouching behind a fallen tree. There was a long standoff before I ended up spraying her with bear mace (Brand: "Counter Assault"), as seen in the video. Stay vigilant friends!
EDIT: The comments warrant some clarification about context.
I know bears, and I know predators: I was a safari guide in Africa for 5 years and had plenty of encounters with Lions, Leopards, and more while being unarmed. I also spend hundreds of hours in the backcountry every year, and many of that time i spend photographing wild bears ( • We Went Searching For ... , and • Photo Story: Big Bear ... ) (Instagram profile: / adam.parkison ) Of the 80+ encounters I’ve had with black bears the last 8 years (and at least a dozen with grizzlies) - this was the only time a bear actually charged me. Its almost unheard of. In fact, I once blundered into a sow with cubs at a similar distance, and stood my ground as she bluff charged me (without having to use my bear spray).
This incident was different: I had the camera on me while I was literally hiding behind a log while the bear had charged up looking for me. The ground had lots of debris and was loud to move around in. The bear was just on the other side of the log I was hiding behind, pacing back and forth. The reason I did not immediately back out of there is because she had me pinned, and I was hoping she would leave without a confrontation. Had I moved backwards in retreat, I risked her charging me anyway.
When I finally stood up and yelled at the bear it was because she was too close and I was now risking her walking directly on me while i was crouched down. When I did yell at the bear, she immediately charged me with her ears flattened (the time I was bluff charged by another sow a few years ago, that bear did not have her ears down). She stopped as soon as the orange cloud of bear mace hit her in the face.
I was far off trail in a designated wilderness area cutting through a south-facing avalanche chute when I encountered these bears. It was a perfect place to blunder into a bear. Hindsight is 20/20, and I recognize I could have done things differently- but I also had enough situational awareness to spot the cubs before the sow spotted me. It was a good outcome for everyone- but i recognize It could have ended badly. I knowingly take these risks when I enter bear country. Had I been mauled, I would have not blamed the bear for doing what bears do naturally.
    Take it or leave it.

When I hike alone I may sing when in thick brush or near rushing water.

      Hunting is a different story.

An Alaskan guy I know said his wife is a solo distance runner, and her "weapon" of choice is a small marine air horn. Doesn't matter which way the wind is blowing with one of them, I've carried one on my mountain bike rides since hearing that, plus I have a bear bell on the handles bars and always make some noise every few seconds. At the Lower Loon Creek airstrip in Idaho, I had a very close encounter with a black bear. I had been sitting under my plane, not moving, drinking a beer and reading, after a day of bike riding, when I saw movement and looked up. There was a good sized BB looking right at me and about 60' away. I immediately jumped up and yelling as loud as I could and waving my arms, ran towards it. It was some kind of caveman reaction, don't tell me it was the correct move or not, I was on auto pilot! It turned and jumped up into a tree, I scared the hell out of it, I backed away and it left the area. I would give big money to see a video of the encounter, I didn't know I could still move that quick, and had no time to get scared, that happened later.

Without breaking stride, I nodded my head at him and muttered, hey bear, looking immediately back ahead the way I was going. As I walked the next steps I was shocked how I just handled that and was happy with my decision. I surveyed said bridge, which was about a twenty second walk further ahead, stayed for all of one minute, and decided to immediately turn around and start the walk back to my truck, about three minutes away. Didn’t want to give that bear anytime to think…so I walked back through, and to my disappointment, he was still sitting in the exact same place. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and worked in recreation management and law enforcement. I was in lower management for 7 years and didn't get in the field but for 5% of my time. I took a voluntary downgrade to return to the field as a supervisor. This was in the Sierra Nevada of California. People have harmed bears by their behavior including not securing their food, leaving it in their cars in full view without locking it up in their trunks, some feeding bears intentionally thinking they are helping them and tolerating the human induced behavior of bears. When a bear adopts behaviors where they are not at all scared of humans, they have to be removed from the gene pool. They can't be trained or reconditioned to gain that fear again. The principle of "adverse conditioning" does not work on bears that have no fear. People got up in arms when a bear needed to be trapped and humanely euthanized. The bear population is greater than it would be in non-human influenced habitats. Bears don't need to be saved, they do best without our help or influence.
Bears were a major component of my workload and it was a human problem, not a bear problem. I saw them nearly every day I was in the field. I was false charged about 5-6 times. I never witnessed a black bear being as aggressive as you describe. I will not second guess you as I wasn't there. Every situation is different and someone criticizing you is unfair. The easiest task in the world is to be a hero in someone else's war.

One exception a guy I worked with and I were climbing Half Dome and we were out in the woods south and east of where the cables start. This prior to the use of bear cannisters. I hung our food exactly as shown in brochures. The bear worked on getting to our food for about 4 hours. He resorted to chewing the branch he thought our parachute cord was hung over. Once he got the branch to fall he saw he had been chewing through the wrong branch. Our branch was thicker and he chewed off about a 3.5 inch branch. He looked at our food bag and huffed loudly. He then ambled off and didn't return. I could see that every specification had to be exactly as the diagrams show. I was practiced though, I hung my food on the job for many years while hiking alone during my lower management years.

The work I do is in areas where bears are present. Most of the time, if a bear sees or hears you, they will run or move away from you. You usually just have to make noise to let them know you are in the area. But once I had a bear walk me down as I tried to keep moving away and then it made a charge at me. I had no spray and I thought I was about to get mauled, and as he was coming at me fast, I stopped and lifted a walking stick I had over my head and the bear made a 90 degree turn without even slowing down from his run and disappeared in the brush. Even though most bears will avoid you, it just takes one bear for whatever reason to turn your day bad.

I would argue the bear spray was completely irrelevant and ineffective in this situation. Looks to me the spray was aimed far too high and shot from too far a distance for it to reach the bear. It appears from the video the bear was turned away by yelling at it. Obviously, I wasn’t there but that’s how it looks to me.

    • @adamparkison

Yes, a few people have speculated that. The camera was aimed at my arm when the spray was actually deployed- it was at its max range (30feet), but I was able to see the orange spray as it touched her face, and because of this I know for a fact it hit her- albeit barely. Her ears were flattened as she ran towards me, but when the spray cloud touched her she stopped instantly and her ears perked up. I had a similar experience with a bluff charge by a sow years ago in which only yelling was enough to turn her (even though I had bear spray in hand)

Black Bear mothers are much better to deal with than Grizzly Bear Sows. With Black Bear sows, a loud yell is usually good enough to stop a charge, which is usually a bluff charge to start with as she tries to get you to leave her area. I’ve had it happen twice and it is not easy to stand your ground unless you have the Bear Guard spray, which is very effective I hear. I didn’t need to spray the Sow on either of my encounters, luckily. I didn’t even have to yell at the one Sow, as she had a one and a half year old cub and so she was very reasonable. We just backed up and let her cub run into the bush. Each Bear is different but I’d much rather run into a Black Bear with cubs than a Grizzly with cubs.

    • @adamparkison
      @adamparkison  3 года назад +1

Indeed. I agree with you. In my long description above I explain how I once had a bluff charge years ago, where I had bear spray in hand, but my yelling was sufficient enough to turn her. This situation was different- up until I sprayed her she was a very angry bear. And I agree with you on the grizzlies- I lived in Montana for a few years, and ironically- I had two very close encounters with sows with Cubs, but these grizzlies ran away from me immediately. As you say, each bear is different.

There are 750,000 black bears in the US, and they kill less than 1 person a year. The same number of humans would kill almost 50 times as many people per year. So I don't think you were in much real danger. And spraying a bear that far away will have zero effect. But making yourself known in an authoritative voice and backing away in an unthreatening manner was the right thing to do. Black bears are only dangerous if they are surprised close to their cubs, and even then it's unlikely to be all that serious.

Awesome and perfect. Happened to me, too, in the Coconino National Forest two years ago. Saw a cub, then started looking for momma.... wasn't long before she stood up on her hinds and made herself known behind the bushes. Got out'ta there fast and kept going. Peace. Pete - KI7LIL

Never run, it's always the last resort, you can be pummeled in 10 seconds flat with no defense at that point

Understatement of the year "that was exciting"!!! Man, I feel the tension and anxiousness of the moment seeing you experience the moments, that probably seemed like hours!
I've only been close to a black bear (that I know of..) in the wild once, it was in the thick brush just off the trail, anyway long story short it scared the crap out of me and was so close I didn't think I could stop it in time with my 9mm browning high power, too close but nobody was injured either. Having a long way yet for you to still hike after that experience would have dragged on the emotional drain of being concerned and on edge and your mind and body being on full emergency alert all the way back to a safe point would have been a huge drain on a person emotionally. Lucky for myself and girlfriend, we were only 100 yards from the end of the trail where a woman was excitedly describing the bear to the state trooper, fish and game type I think, how big etc, it had came across the trail right in front of her,, from her right to left, so she had to come ask us if we saw it, but we didn't have to hike miles wondering about it stalking us all the way, thank God!!! It was pawing at the earth like a mad bull and its claws through the leaves, dirt and pinecone up into the trees behind it, I thought it must gave cubs and be about to charge any second from only 10 to maybe 15 away in brush so thick I could only make out parts of it at any given time when it was acting up. Glad you made it out ok!!! You have 1 heck of an educational experience to chalk up in your life's library of knowledge to carry with you all the way!
