Do the infiniti's have the SMOD radiator failure problem like the Pathfinders in Frontiers, where the anti-freeze contaminates the transmission or do the Infinities have a different radiator? Thank you, your a very knowledgeable mechanic!!!!👍
It's time to do my transmission service again so I'm watching your video again. Last time my filter look perfect so I thought this time only drain and fill. Do you think that's ok? The fluid looks pretty good.
If you regularly service this vehicle look up Pathfinder SMOD. It is when the antifreeze mixes with the transmission fluid and kills the transmission. It's very common from 2005-2010. It is preventable by bypassing the transmission lines that run to the lower radiator.
Thank you! I just put in a brand new filter, the 3 nuts were somewhat easily broken and then removed with fingers with up or side tension applied to the bolts. Pan gasket is stuck on and used a guitar pick to clean it off safely :) The old filter is very much usable but even after spray cleaning I could see a layer of dirt and ended up replacing.
About 2005 to 2009 a lot of Nissan , xterra, pathfinder, frontier, have leak in radiator into transmission fluid. This will absolutely kill your transmission if you have your radiator fluid get into your transmission. He fix getting an external mount transmission cooler to prevent tranny fluid contamination. Cost is around $100. Nissan had a part time recall and extended warranty for an additional 20k miles or so. But for most most it's too late. If you have transmission problems in this Nissan series stated above you know what your dealing with. I found out the hard way.
Hi didnt put in a cooler just bypassed changed around hoses. The fluid is a dull pink with no smell. I may just change it just incase it could be low in oil. Cold it drives fine but when trans is warmed up, it will just rev high and very slowly move
So even with a pale colour pink it should be okay by just topping up? Or should i change the oil and filters? Whats the valve body? Thank u very much for getting back to me. I dont want to get ripped off at a trans place if i can do it myself lol
+mark hammer valve body its main part off trans to make all shifth u can see if u remove oil pan i dont recomended remove u can do its top off oil and see how response
The video is really good. However you don't tell us if you replaced the gasket. Was there a gasket. If so what gasket. Also tork on the bolts. And did you clean or replace the filter.
This is the first time.ive seen someone actually change the filter. Everyone just changes fluid. I am going to be performing this service on my 09 Xterra. How much fluid did it take after the filter exchange ?
julian #1automecanic thank you very much an I agree , changing the filter with the fluid is the best way. Otherwise your putting new fluid to filter through an old dirty filter. Just makes sense to do both. Did you use the Nissan fluid or another brand of fluid. I recently just did the radiator by pass on mine. So the radiator fault doesn't affect me. I bought a quart of the Nissan trans fluid an it was 12$. It is not cheap.
brilliant video! thank you so much, the idea about pushing it sideways to trap the bolts which are lose with the nuts is great :) Please can you advise part number for the filter? cheers!

Now now I'm concern about the radiator afyer watching some videos on RUclips how can I tell if is oem , do you have any advise on what to look for? thanks
julian #1automecanic I just replaced my radiator on my 2006 Frontier because I recently heard about this problem. Apparently, Frontiers, Pathfinders, and Xterras were affected from 2005 - 2010. Nissan never acknowledged the problem no doubt because of liability issues. The original radiator had a sticker on it that said Calsonic Made in North America. It also had Nissan stamped on it. Both names were on top to the right of the filler. My truck was within the mileage range where the problem became apparent. Not all vehicles were affected, but I would not take a chance on being one of the unlucky ones. My fluids showed no sign of having been affected yet and my transmission was working good. I ordered a Denso Radiator, made in China replacement for about $120 I found on Amazon. It was a perfect match and seemed to be well built. Took me about 5 hours to do the job. I have minimal mechanical skills. I watched a couple RUclips videos about changing radiators and referred to a Chilton manual for my truck. $120 investment and a few hours labor seems like good insurance against a $3000 to $8000 dollar catastrophe. Good luck. This was actually meant as a reply to Manuel Rivas. Sorry.
julian #1automecanic good call on doing this preventive maintenance , I'm now having transmission issues , I have a 2005 v6 Nissan xterra (149k miles)automatic , I did a radiator change couple months ago but apparently the damage was already done , I thought about doing this preventive maintenance 2 yrs ago at my 100k miles mark. Was going to install the bypass mini radiator , but I just sat down too long and pushback and never did it , now I regret it ! My transmission hardly shifts from 1st to 2nd gear , sometimes delay the change it takes like 5-8 sec after press acceleration. Already did tranny flush , my only hope is that one of the transmission solenoids is faulty , will do a tranny filter change and will check those solenoids resistance next
