- In 1981, Polydor released a "Double 'B'-Side" vinyl album staring "The Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy" very own Paranoid Android, Marvin.
The first B-Side featured "Reasons To Be Miserable" (a paraody of "Reasons To Be Cheerful" by Ian Dury And The Blockheads). The other B-Side of the single was called "Marvin I Love You".

my dad used to listen to this song as a kid and ended up sharing it with me, now i hold it very close to my heart.

I too first heard this on the Dr. Demento show back in the early 80's ..didn't know until about 10 years later that it was connected to HGTTG.

Yes, I was still living in Japan when I heard this over FEN (Far East Network, a radio/TV network for American active duty personel.) This song made me both happy and so sad. I just wanted Marvin to find some happiness, he definitely deserved it.

I dont think so, he was a paranoid android before he even thought of the notion. Makes it too real for me
I'd just like to point out that the female voice says "I'm programmed for you" and "loving you is all I can do", likely meaning she is fated to continuously reach out to someone who she cannot find and probably couldn't connect with anyway, since Marvin is programmed to be severely depressed and might be incapable of truly loving her back if they ever did meet.
And if you want it to be even sadder, what if it's not a tape, but a signal?

Well, he was sure he hadn't heard that ever before. He wasn't even sure he'd heard it that time, because, being a bored and gloomy robot, he hadn't really been listening. What was worse, he couldn't remember what button he'd accidentally pressed. Anyway, he tried a few switches at random, and suddenly:

Well, he heard it that time alright, no doubt about it. Who was singing these strange words? Was it another robot, or some strange life form from the distant past, when he was a young robot and people still made the occasional attempt to like him? He couldn't make it out at all. So, he pushed a few buttons again

I tried to contact Marvin. I don't know why, but he never replied. Perhaps one day he'll answer. Till then, I guess, I'll keep on... trying

on Depressive Discs. The song involves Marvin describing his views on
life ("I'd feel a little better if they broke me up for spares", "If I
had my time again, I'd rather be a lemming"), to a synthesiser backing. The title is a reference to "Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3" by Ian Dury.
"Marvin I Love You" was the other B-side. Marvin describes
finding a love letter in his data banks eons after receiving it. The
female vocal is provided by Kimi Wong-O'Brien. The song was a frequently requested tune on the Dr. Demento

It’s not sad. Marvin found out someone loved him and still does. It’s a spot of happiness for him and all he has to do is find her. It’s not sad.

The "Double B-Side" gimmick must have a take-off of the "double A-Side" thing that a few artists did, famously the Beatles with "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out".

That is a nice twist in the usual eternal love song. Finally a popcultural reference not even worth it, but also a very nice choice to pick up the original, and develope it to progression, where it doesnt seemed unnecessary to progress it. With that i mean, it really adds something to the reference, and it does it properly.
