- Marvin, the Paranoid Android: "Marvin" (1981) by Stephen Moore
Marvin
I'm just a robot and I know my place
A metal servant to the human race
I work my can off trying to satisfy
I know they'll disconnect me by and by.
Chip on my shoulder made of silicon
My printed circuit's like a lexicon
Ten billion logic functions, maybe more
They make me pick the paper off the floor.
Solitary solenoid
Terminally paranoid
Marvin
Know what makes me really mad
They clean me with a Brillo Pad
A carwash wouldn't be so bad
Life! Don't talk to me about life.
I'm so depressed I could expectorate
My moving parts are in a solid state
I want to rust in peace, switch off and lie
In that great junk yard in the sky.
Solitary solenoid
Terminally paranoid
Marvin
Nothing left to be enjoyed
Every diode rheumatoid
Marvin
Outer alloy
Inner void
Marvin
Happiness has been destroyed.
RIP Stephen Moore, the voice of Marvin. "What's up Marvin?" "I don't know, I've never been there."
"Sorry did I say something wrong? Pardon me for breathing which I never do anyway so i don't know why I bother to say it, oh god I'm so depressed. Here's another one of those self satisfied doors. Life...don't talk to me about life."
42 years out and still great
Of course! The answer to Life, The Universe and Everything
And a Multiversal Law. @@ILJ68
I had both singles as a kid. Identifying with this depressed robot helped me through a lot as a teenager.
Then you were not committed enough! oh what does it matter anyway :/
@@user-ei3ux6gt3s And if it matters, does it matter that it matters?
"Outer alloy, inner void." So relatable.
Anyone else have a terrible pain in all the diodes down their left side? 🤖
I'm
And I think that rat is still in my leg cavity…
The first song I ever heard on the Dr. Demento radio show back in the 80's. Has been a personal favorite all these years. 🤖
“Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they tell me to pick up a piece of paper...”
Ha ha. Douglas Adams a Genius. The Book.
Whoever wrote and performed this , just brilliant again. Ha ha. Yeah.
42?
Pardon?
WTF!
I like how I've went from listening to music from kid shows I've never heard of to a song about a robot with depression.
Rest In Peace to both Stephen Moore and Alan Rickman. Both clearly cared for Marvins' character very much, and that's another primary reason why I think fighting over which one is better is useless. The full primary reason is that the decision was Douglas Adams' choice.
And I always follow Multiversal Law #42. I Think, Therefore I Am.
RIP, Mr. Moore. May your diodes hurt no more.
R.I.P Stephen Moore, I think you ought to know I'm very depressed.....
And it's not even Thursday
“Life. Don’t talk to me about life!.”
Well, he IS enthusiastically, whole-heartedly depressed. Yes, I’m aware that that is a contradiction in terms.
I didn't even mention it
RIP Stephen Moore.
Dr. Demento used to play Marvin. He also helped to introduce the world to Laurie Anderson with "O Superman."
Goodbye Marvin,my friend. We'll miss you. RIP
Zaphod: "Hey, Marvin, come on over, we've got a job for you."
Marvin: "I won't enjoy it."
Zaphod: "Oh yes you will, there's a whole new life stretching out in front of you."
"Marvin: "Oh, not another one."
Is he piloting the spaceship "Heart of Gold" and its Improbability drive? Stick out a thumb and don't forget your towel. DON'T PANIC!
OMG, I have been looking for this song for over a decade. I have a Doctor Demento recording I made which includes this.... I never thought I'd find it on RUclips. Thank you!
I used to stay up late Sunday nights recording the Dr. Demento show on blank cassettes and remember hearing this for the first time in the early 80s!
Same exactly! I recorded it onto a cassette from a Dr. Demento show in the 80's, but the tape (and tape player) are long gone. Found it again today for the first time since!
You should have asked me!
"Look robot the stars are out."
"I've seen it. It's RUBBISH."
"Don't try to engage my enthusiasm because I haven't got one."
my dam god 35 years haven't heard this since a piece of my early childhood re discovered FANTASTIC
you know what really makes me mad they clean me with a brillo pad
I'm surprised he hasn't got a lot more scratches in that case.
*_A Car Wash Wouldn't Be So Bad_*
Life, don't talk to me about LIFE!
well now i think marvin clearly has all the reason in the world to be depressed
You said in 2014. What d'ya reckon now?
2018 now, how do ya feel?
Thanks for the upload. I haven't heard this one since the mid-80's!
'Your plastic pal, who's fun to be with.'
You'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes!
Marvin Depreciation Society. What a fan club name!
Marvin you make me less depressed 😆😘
Marvin, you showed a reflective depressive kind of logic, made people feel better, and I would be depressed doing the same repetitive job day in day out, so thanks for pointing that out
Love you (the original and proper) Marvin
Door says
'nice to be of service'
Oh, how ghastly!
Brain the size of a planet.
They make me pick the paper off the floor.. XD
Marvin "outer alloy, inner void" the andriod
how do "space" people do anything. A manically-depressed android(just depressed) a borderline-psychotic coffee maker, a passive-aggressive iPhone(we already do) a door that has generalized anxiety and is a "people pleaser" and a schizophrenic star ship auto pilot that hits things that aren't there and does not maneuver from objects that are but it doesn't see.
Marvin must work at a call center.
Hotel
Actually it was the restaurant at the end of the universe. He parked spaceships for guests.
For a moment I thought I was hearing Russian.
Is the voice Alan rickman?
@@deborahhanna6640 Stephen Moore. He was Marvin in the first two radio series and the TV series.
Brings it all back!
FANTASTIC been looking for a decent copy of this, used to have it on vinyl and cassette, but lost in the depths of time.
"Pardon me for breathing, which I never do anyway so I don't know why I bother to say it, Oh God, I'm so depressed.""And then, of course, I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side."
Outer alloy, inner void.
"is that your robot?" "No I'm mine"
“If you could call him a robot… he’s more like an electronic sulking machine.”
my youth brought back, thank you
All my capacitors down my right side are incapacitated...
Life don't talk to me about life
This is amazingly good, though it sounds very depressing, but very nice, thank you!
Thank you for uploading this.
I love this so much!
Wretched, Isn't It?
Poor bugger wasn't wrong 😢
All because you're paranoid doesn't mean folk aren't out to get ya!?
i am so depressed i could expectorate.
god i still love u kid
For anyone reading this message, it is my 42nd Birthday 🎉
If I was a medieval king I'd be dead by now. Oh how I wish for the deep dark sweet embrace of eternal sleep, yet Marvin makes me feel so optimistic ❤
Why isn’t this on Spotify!?
Wow cool track, kinda reminds me of i feel love by Donna Summer. Thank you for the upload
So this feels like MArvin was based upon Dysthymia / MDD (potencially double depression). i can relate to that detached hollowed feeling of missing drive and hope.
Who would guess it? being i most relate to in fiction is plastic bot from 80s BBC.
i think that's usually called being very sad
poets have been writing about it since the start of romanticism at the very latest, likely way earlier
I haven't heard this since the BBC series. I had a soft vinyl record of it once.
Writer credits to John Sinclair the Producer, Stephen Moore and Douglas Adams.
Almost forgot this one.
Somebody questioned the human race reference well he spends most of the first two radio series serving both of them.
Stephen Allcroft That is to say both remaining humans.
Love this song , my copy of the single was STOLEN...........thx for uploading
+Tony Banyer shows that somebody else valued it -and could not get their copy any other way
Brian the size of a planet, and they pinch my records.
MARVIN I 3 U
I had this on single until my dad "accidentally" dropped and stepped on it..lol...I did torture him with it.. :-)
That big guy had it coming
He destroyed a collector's item that might have paid for your retirement.
Dr. Demento used to play this.
1:51 i can't be the only one who gets really fucking sad at these two lines
I’m so sad we didn’t get this in the most recent hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
I'm so sad over all of 2005 Hitchhiker's Guide still.
outer alloy inner void
happiness has been destroyed
Well with deepfake technology, we will likely hear him forever, as he’s so iconic as Marvin.
me having a depressive episode at 2 am
Yes...Mr. Moore is marvelous but i always woder about the female vocal
Wo is she?
The actress who played Trillian.
and now im curious what the code tape strip says or has on it.
They make clean their toilet, oh gloriously pure and simple shit...
I did not mean dislike this. My bad.
zachary judkins No worries, Marvin dislikes everyone
if you hit like it cancels the dislike.
I rhink I've officially gone insane this shit slaps
I thought I would include a song about Marvin, while I'm raving about him.
First I thought it was Human League!
banger if played correctly
Tim Wellss proof it does exist and yes,I own a copy
Heheh. Cant believe Ive never heard that
Space pants. Hey look, I'm wearing space pants.
Your plastic pal who's fun tooo be wiiiiith!
Is it just me or do I hear something sounding like the beginnings of Depeshe Mode in this?
What’s this from?
From the BBC TV series The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy over 40 years ago.
Hoover

Is this technically a rap?
I think it's "talk rock".
Who is the voice? Is it Alan rickman?
Deborah Hanna
Stephen Moore.
jamestheposh thank you! And a thank you to Stephen Moore- he really does sound like Alan Rickman! (At one point, I knew the name of the female singer from the older version but I do not remember it now)
God, the movie design is so much better
+LemonWedge123 :^( i prefer the old model
+LemonWedge123 it's called, "having an opinion" and it's something people do
trashfilled mind It's called using real punctuation :)
Phil K It's like you're TRYING to be hated
+LemonWedge123 wow HAHa the conversion of text into data must have messed up the quotation marks. that happens sometimes. :)
