Soooo evocative and real. Scene always gives me chills. I love specifically listening to this version and really paying attention to the lyrics. One of the best scenes and songs of the show by far
I saw the original movie as a very young teen. And it is still a favorite! John Legend gave me the same chills as Ted Neely did at 13 to now 63🙏🏻🕊✝️🌸♥️
That is really the difference between theatre and how filming can change the angles. I did like Legend's version where it brings in doubt and fear. OTOH, Neeley's was pure, raw power that doubles down with doubt, fear and even anger.
He did a beautiful job. Ohio guy. Its not really that religious. Its a musical. He really did a wonderful job. His vocals were on par. Why he got a Tony.
It’s so sad that John couldn’t hit the high notes in gethsemane because the high notes bring so much power and emotion to the song! That’s what happens when celebrities and pop stars get casted as musical theatre roles.
I like John Legend but not in this. Musical theater just isn't in his wheel house right now; he's not an MT actor. With training it can be. He made too many poor choices with this song starting with singing it in pop style instead of musical theater style. There wasn't any passion in his effort. This is Jesus Christ of Nazareth minutes before his arrest and condemnation to death; however, because of John's musical choices, the frustration, anger and fear didn't come through at all. Compare to Ted Neely's delivery. It's a different planet.
I was a musical theater major. I was finally impressed with him. It's not all Sarah Brightman, Betty Buckley, Many Patinkin, and Jonathan Groff. No one thought Hamilton would make it with all the rap, BUT what Lin Manuel did was brilliant, AND he brought people into musical theater that otherwise wouldn't be interested I think for a mainstream musician, Legend did a great job. Few mainstream artists want to even touch musicals. Signed a Lyric Soprano.
Indeed, every performer has his own version, but if I may be honest I adore the song, but John's version couldn't touch me. Good job, but you see him struggle too much. (. just my opinion)
I love how every performer gives their own version of a song and I love his version of it - different but beautiful in its own way.
What an incredibly moving performance. That's an extremely difficult song to sing.....I got goose bumps through out the whole performance....

I knew he could pull this off! Spectacular!

Watched Dan Vasc do this song and was blown away, best version I’d heard.
John Legend sang to the audience, Ted Neeley appeared to be singing to God

Jesus Christ is Alive and Well
So moving! That's Juilliard material!
this is my PRE- comment. I am praying that he crushes this.
Really good, a very intimate, human, & agonal performance.

I would say he portays the agony of christ in a solid 8.6/10
I love the performance......He was so real, I think even the son of God felt alone.
Before I Change my mind Our Lord and Savior is in Control 🔥😊
😊
John Legend is a LITERAL LEGEND....this song was underwhelming. It's a power song that Ted Neely certainly sang best.
5:00 always kills me sad :(
Nothing to do with the movie.
Sorry but it is what it is.

Agree... he's too shallow to play this role
Neither of you can perform this. Can you? Just jealous.
Vocally he was really good, but emotionally, not so much. Yesterday I watched another representation, with Glen Carter and WOOOW!

Second comment
I love Legend, but it didn't work for him.
Nobody, nobody plays Gethsemane better than STEVE BALSAMO.

I might suggest Josh Groban!
So bad for the aad loll
Love John Legend...but this musical doesn't fit his voice.
Sorry 😞 John, but Ted did a better job than you!!!
Worst performance ever
I think because you lack his pedigree-Juilliard education, EGOT, model spouse-you are jealous.
John was in way over his head for this role/performance.
