So we have a weird movie yall haha this definitely is up there for one of the weirdest but yet coolest movies! This is a Mubi film which I hadn’t really heard of until this film but this came out this year and it’s titled THE SUBSTANCE! Elisabeth Sparkle, renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself.

This movie focuses so much on Elisabeth's journey in dealing with aging and trying to maintain what Hollywood considers "beautiful", that we never really get any details on why her character is the way she is or explore other aspects of her life.
The best hints that we get, however, are through Sue! Who serves as a representation of what Elisabeth was like in her prime years and how fame got in her head to the point she became narcissistic (the huge portrait of herself in her condo symbolizes that attribute) and selfish!
Which more than likely resulted in her losing meaningful connections with friends and family, which is why she lives a lonely life. In a way, her dealing with the predicament of her career starting to fade and losing her relevance is a consequence of what she's allowed fame to do to her but is desperately trying to escape facing it.

I have heard that Universal was originally going to distribute this movie but chickened out when they realised how wild it was getting. MUBI obviously realised how great the film is and bought the film realising this could bring in more subscribers. It was only on in the UK cinemas for a few weeks and it was the first film I have seen in years where I left the cinema absolutely buzzing with a huge grin!!

they are one. Elisabeth resents herself, it was inevitable that Sue would share the same sentiment. Elisabeth wanted to be young, when she gets that chance via Sue, she is so overcome by the adoration and praise and ‘love’ she gets that she becomes more and more resistant to switching. As Sue, she is lost in the pink cloud of celebrity. Elisabeth wanted what Sue gave her but since she still has to live in her own body and suffer from Sue’s choices, she can’t help but dissociate in a sense and look at Sue as an individual who is hurting her. Because they are one, Sue does the same. Elisabeth is forgetting that they are one, only concerned about what she had when she was young and at the same time blaming her younger self for everything that has happened to her.

I see a lot of confusion about whether sue and Elizabeth share the same consciousness. They do. That’s why you keep seeing “you are one”. It’s only 1 mind. It’s just that their personality seems to switch between sue and Elizabeth. A good example to prove that they are the same mind is in the beginning Elizabeth writes Sue down on the calendar. As far as I know she hasn’t heard or seen sues name in the world yet

I think the reason they don’t have the memory of each other’s actions is just bc they have two separate brains, but the same consciousness.
with two separate brains, the memories couldn’t be stored from the other’s actions, so elisabeth can’t remember what happened but she was the only consciousness making decisions.

Also they are very similar. Theyre both very into themselves but for some reason people sympathize with her older character. But she’s very vain. We only see it more in her younger self. She’s alone with seemingly no friends. And she wasn’t concerned with Fred’s feelings.

Everyone asks why such a simple, anachronistic name of SUE was chosen. It's taken a whole month of watching the movie twice and watching numerous You Tube reviews until tonight, my brain experienced a revelation.
SUE = suicide. The sound of, 'Sue' corresponds to the first syllable of, 'su-i-cide. Essentially Elisabeth Sparkle commits suicide by a related version of, 'suicide by cop'. Elisabeth's clone, Sue, kills her and thereafter suffers her own gruesome, horrendous death after misusing the once-only activation drug out of sheer desperation. Sue was not supposed to be quite a clone as such since the movie kept stating, "You Are One". Both shared the same consciousness but separate egos, as someone else remarked. But even with the same consciousness both quickly developed separate personalities because of different life experiences, just as identical twins have separate consciousnesses and personalities.

Loved your reaction!! Loved your humor and hilarious edits! Loved your thought provoking takes!! Loved the fashions i.e 🐉 robe+💛coat. Glad the algorithm did its thing to stumble across your channel.
Deliciously disgusting this film is! It has style+substance🧪💉A social commentary on aging with body horror elements using practical effects, impeccable sound+editing. No amount of change will ever be enough to appease everyone much less undeserving, misogynistic men who do not actually appreciate women for who they are, but only how fckable they deem women to be.
Sue represents the younger version of Elisabeth, still impressionable, full of faux confidence bc the patriarchy has beholden a woman’s value to beauty and youth, still fertile. Elisabeth chases her youth in the form of Sue much like someone that keeps running back to the plastic surgeon’s office. And there are consequences bc one begins to stray so far from their original appearance, dare I say monstrous.
The greatest tenderness the character gives herself is when ElisaSue emerges and the greatest vacation she gives herself is the absence of a body for judgment. Just a mere amoeba with Elisabeth as the nucleus of the cell.
The violence we put ourselves through comparing ourselves to our own younger version of ourselves when we look at pics of us a decade ago. We must be kinder to ourselves.
I like that her yellow coat symbolized the egg in the beginning and then we see Sue wearing the coat to emphasize they are one post injection.
*Outward beauty, but inner ugliness to thyself. The enemy is the inner me🩷🩷

I mean, the metaphorical microscope many women feel is self Imposed, or their own paranoia. I don't think it's a gender specific commentary, I think, in general, it's a commentary on the human psyche. Both genders undergo their own form of that self-imposed internal microscope. Take people who go to the gym for example, as someone who goes to the gym. I can say from experience I'm not there to stare at people, I'm there to work on my self-image and health. It's easy to get lost in that, and have it be our own undoing in the long run.
