Saw him live thrice 20years back: he has lost some of his clear as a bell, peer through tonality, and light on his feet rendition of Desh tarana (thanks paan), but what he lacks there, now he makes up for it with a more introspective and meditative style which suits him as an elder statesman of khayal now. He has definitely gained some headroom in the lower octave and he now has a more noirish and a heftier tone.
And what does that long, long long note do? A note held for so so long? It takes us to our eternal being deep within us. Great indeed. And this particular song and Raag, addressed to god, saying it is now really taken so long, help me cross over
I once talked to the Ustad over phone, he is a great artist at the same time he also very humble personality....His raga saraswathi { south Indian melody ] and brindavani sarang are outystanding, Mr. Abdull pls listen both....
