- Join me for a POV drive on my used 2009 #Honda #Civic EX-L 5-speed manual transmission coupe. In this used car review, I share my ownership impressions of the 8th Generation Civic, winner of the 2006 MotorTrend Car of the Year award.
The Honda Civic is very popular on the used car market being a fun to drive, reliable and fuel efficient vehicle equipped with the 1.8-litre SOHC i-VTEC (R18A) engine from Honda.
The 8th gen was first introduced in 2006, and continued into 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and lastly 2011.
I love this car so much. When I was 7 and first saw my dad bring this car home I was struck by the styling inside and out; The blue paint, the sports car-like windshield angle, the corresponding huge dash, and the digital speedo made it seem like a spaceship to me. And Honda engineering means that 16+ years of commutes and 197k miles later she still revs out and consents to being driven like she's stolen day in day out. I love that the limit of this car's performance is fully accessible, and the rattles and wobbles she has developed with age sometimes even make her feel fast, haha. I want to give my dad a big hug for buying this beauty and handing her off to me.
Honda really is timeless hey? Beautiful story and glad you are still enjoying this amazing car!
I just bought a 2011 civic and I’m IN LOVE!!! I used to have an 08, and this one really just takes the cake. I absolutely love how it handles corners, the screams of the engine, and the overall quality of it
I have the same car but an automatic, it is incredible how timeless it looks in the inside and the outside.
Agreed! I'm a huge fan of how Honda consistently does this with top notch build quality and reliability (as you can probably guess with all my Honda motorcycles on the channel!). Drive safe!
The styling is what they went back too
Agreed
06 to 08 are best looking. The only car I've ever owned that always look back when I walk away
@@kevinwhiting839106-12 look the same
Eighth generation is the the best looking CIVIC of all times, period. No other comes close
The 2024’s are some of the best looking cars on the road
@@rollingthunderinho Does look nice. I'm just scared of CVT's. Haven't had one yet. My wife had a CVT (although it was Nissan) and she bought the car new. Within 30k miles, the transmission was done for. Was replaced under warranty at least. But yeah I've heard nothing but bad things about CVT's so I still wouldn't get one myself.
Just bought one this week and I love it!
Congrats! Hope in enjoy it. Drive safe✌️
I have a 2009 5 speed lx-s, I'm in love with the car it's such a fun little car that in my opinion still looks really good years later.
Thanks for watching! Honda really was ahead of the game with this 8th gen. Still such a blast to drive the 5-speed manual and looks great in 2021.
i got an 8th gen si as my first "fun car" because i didnt like my 7th gen lx. theyre pretty cheap, and as an 18yo going into the airforce i didnt want any debt so i bought a used si thatll last me until im out of the military. im loving it every time i drive!
Nice man, I heard those 8th gen Si's are a blast but I've never personally driven one. I enjoyed my 9th gen Si for the short period I had it though!
I just bought one of these. I love it so much.
Mine is a 2006 auto with 102,000 kms and it’s by far the best car I’ve ever owned
Glad to hear! Here’s to the next 102k km!
I remember when I was younger I absolutely loved this generation of the Civic and it was always my dream to drive one. Almost a year now during my summer with all the crazy gas and used car prices I was saving up money to just get a car in general when one day I managed to find someone selling their Manual 08 EX Coupe for a great price, good mileage, and has given me no issues at all. Every time I get to drive it I absolutely enjoy it and I'm glad that luck was on my side and I got my Dream Civic ^_^
Thanks for sharing! Really is a timeless generation.
2008 manual owner, i dont ever want to sell IT, so good.
It really is! Thanks for watching ✌️
Love my 09 Si Coupe! Has over 178,000 miles on the clock, and still runs great.
I own a Honda Civic 2009, still loving it!
8th gen will definitely go down in the history books! Thanks for watching✌️
I own a 2007 Honda Civic LX sedan with 220,000 kms and the engine runs like brand new. I bought it new and it has been serviced at the dealer since day 1. In June of this year, I got t-boned in it, and now it's a write off because the insurance wouldn't pay for the repairs even though it wasn't my fault, as someone ran a stop sign and hit my car. A week ago, I bought a 2009 Honda Civic EX sedan with 145,000 kms and I hope to drive it for another 5 to 10 years.
Nice man, I just crossed 183,000 miles on my 11 Honda civic lx 5 spd. I love the 8th Gen, I've owned the car since it was new back in 2011. Car is rock solid. Great video!
Thank you! That's some solid miles on your 11'. Great generation Civic indeed. Drive safe ✌️
They are all 5 speed except the SI which is a six-speed manual when you say 5-speed you have to specify
i have the same car but its a 2010. came from a unreliable german car that gave me nothing but problems, glad to have the civic. i havent had any problems the last few years and i drive a lot
I love my 07 Honda Civic..Bought it brand new, still going strong at 178,000 miles😊
I have 2013 V automatic..It has inbuilt blutooth.. so quite comfortable to receive calls or to play songs.. it's such an awesome car to drive.. whenever I'm away from car I just watch other civic driving videos.. just to get feel of my car driving.. ;P
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more :)
@@RideYEG sure.. please create more driving vlogs with Civic.. 🙏
Love my Honda Civic EX 2006 2 door coupe you right fun to drive 290 K still running great no problem
The 8th gen has aged beautifully, the front is as good as a Tesla (not a Tesla fan btw) and just overall, the entire body really is great, my '09 is still running very well with 400,000kms.
Here’s to 400k more 🍻
@@RideYEG Thanks dude, likewise.
Much better looking than Tesla as Tesla look like a frog 🐸
@@carlosw1687 All model or Tesla are hideous. OP's comment was an insult to the Civic.
I get to drive the one I just bought tomorrow. Thank you for this vid I’m amped.
Excited for you! Drive safe✌️
I have a 2007 Honda civic 5 speed manual with 216k miles on it and I use it to do uber! I have to say I beat the shit out of that little car and I can't believe how reliable it's been to me! It's a fun little car to drive, I gotta admit though it's very slow but once I get to 3rd gear IM GONEEEE! lol as crazy as this might sound I like driving my regular 8th gen better than the 8th gen si!
I totally agree! I had a 9th gen Si before this believe it or not. Just wasn't as smooth as the regular Civic. 2nd and 3rd gear are my favorite on this car.
Mine is 2010 4 door automatic with 265,000 miles. Engine is running like new, doesn’t consume, burns or leaks one drop of oil. Negative issue is a reflection of the dashboard light on the screen that you sometimes see at night. That is due to the long and flat windshield and took a while to get used to. Excellent commuter 35 mpg highway. Service is every 5 thousand miles. Make sure to service the transmission every 30 thousand miles, fluid degrades faster than recommended and may start to shift funny if you wait 50 K
Here's to the next 265k miles! You're right about the slanted dash but it makes the vehicle so unique. Drive safe✌️
Trying to sell me a 2011 4 door honda civic for 5500 but it has a rebuikt title w 57k miles. Shud I buy?
I HAVE A cIVIC AUTO 2010 AND I STILL THINK IT IS STYLISH TODAY (2023) IT GOES PERFECTLY AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IY AT ALL. IT'S ONLY DONE 74000S kms.
I’ve always liked Hondas but this Gen got me into cars as a whole. I have an 08 Lx Coupe manual and I love it! Don’t catch me in 4th gear IM GONE lol
4th gear? I have an 07 ex coupe and 1st and 2nd have the most torque
@@tj2441 1st and 2nd are good for me too but 4th gives me the most when I’m stretching it
2008 LX 5 Spd. has 250,000 kms on it and it has never skipped a beat on me. I drive it quite spiritedly but it’s never failed or nothin. 3 years I’ve owned it and I honestly never want to own anything else, besides my PT cruiser that I use for winter driving which is also one of the most reliable cars you can buy(engine wise) for super cheap and maintain for even cheaper.
Amazing!!
2009 Honda Civic Lx . My car is 12 years old with 161,500 miles . What a car !
161k miles and still going strong I bet!
I test drove one in 2010 when I was looking for my first car because the car was beautiful. Was unimpressed with how bumpy the ride was. But 12 years later I bought one for $2k to satisfy that itch. Moral of the story, young kids. if you love a car that’s being marketed today, wait a decade to buy it and it’ll cost you a fraction of what you’d pay today 😂
Haha that’s what I’m planning to do with that new Mazda 3 AWD in a couple years😝
I presently have a 2010 ex-l coupe manual as my main car, also have a 99 miata (yes mazda does make a nice manual trans). I am 57 and I have been driving civics for well over 20 years now. I have owned a 97 dx coupe manual, a 2004 lx sedan auto and a red 2005 si coupe manual. I drove many Fords and GMs when I was younger, my first car was a 1970 mustang 302 fastback. But for me the Honda Civic is the perfect car. Reliable and fun to drive. I have never purchased a new car but recently have been looking at videos of the new civic hatchback. I didn't care for the 9th or 10th gen civics so much but I do like the look of this 11th gen hatchback. For me it would have to be the lx so I could have the manual transmission with the 2.0L K20C2. I do not trust the 1.5 turbo to last as long. My problem is I really don't like all the new tech. My first 3 civics had well over 300,000 km on them when I sold them, in fact I gave my 2004 civic sedan to my son and he's still driving it daily with 340,000 km! My present 2010 ex-l only has 162,000 km currently so maybe I'll just continue to take really good car of it and drive it for another decade and more! Cheers and thanks for sharing, I agree with you.
Thanks for sharing! Let me know when you’ve picked up your new ride if you do decide on one. Would be curious to hear your experience👍
This year I bought a 2008 honda civic dx. I am also from yeg and drive it to campus every week. It's a gem! :)
Very nice!
Have the same one. 2008 you drive it way faster then me lol. It's just my car to work 4x a week. Really is a good little car. Had it for two year's in March pays for it's self for me not having to put the miles on my duramax. Got it with 70k just hit 108k. Wish my inside looked as clean as yours..
Thanks for watching. It's such a great fun to drive commuter, but I was genuinely going the speed limit and always do! (I really hate tickets). Could be the illusion on camera but this car gives you that "slow car fast" feeling haha. I try to keep all my interiors immaculate and I'll have some more car content on the way. Any requests?
@@driverman9528 Totally know what you mean by that Go Kart feeling! 162k miles is impressive. What do you think your next car would be if you ever replace the Civic?
@@driverman9528 Is it the Auto or Manual? We had an old 2002 Honda CRV that needed 2 transmission replacements!
Got a 06 ex coupe with 137k. It’s my main commuter but have a 99 Sierra also. A truck and car combo works really well.
@@MrHuck Agreed. Always good to have something roomy with cargo area and another zippy car preferably manual transmission ✌️
I have an 8th gen ex. It is not a fast car, but it is quick. Easy to work on. Parts are cheap. Has big tires, I am driving on 225/45/17. Disc brakes on all 4. It is a great car.
Hey mate awesome video. I just bought this as my first car here in Australia. 2008 civic 1.8l 5 speed manual with 180,000 kms. Coming from automatic it's hard to learn to drive but I'm getting the hang of it. I like the look of these cars, I really think they got the styling right. I had a mechanic check it before I bought it and he said it was in good shape. The car runs really well but does have some minor issues. The AC works really well for about 20 minutes after a cold start then cuts out and in intermittently. Think it might be a refrigerant pressure issue that's shutting the compressor off. Also mine can sometimes be hard to get into 2nd and reverse gear and the clutch has quite a high take up point, so I'm not sure if the clutch or the synchros(hopefully not) are worn somewhat. I'm gonna keep it serviced and try and get some good use out of it.
I had to do the bearings in my 5 speed at just under 190k. They have some odd sizes and were hard to find
I just bought an Si of the same generation, but first year of the 4 door. I like the 4 door version better imo
Nice man! Yeah I do like the practicality of the 4 door but something about the coupe has an impractical fun factor to it haha. Thanks for watching ✌️
I just bought a used one 2007 model, my first car ever, U.K🤗
Just got mine in a manual, still learning the clutch😂 hope to drive as well as you soon
Word bite point is high on it
I really love my Civic Hybrid, but I think I’m going to swap it for another 8th gen civic with a manual trans. Going to miss 50mpg though.
Hopefully you don’t notice the mpg difference too much! You might be able to get the best of both worlds if you find a Honda CRZ - one of my dream cars (a manual hybrid)
Both one today 2007 240k miles still runs and drives new . . Exterior is peeling off but powertrain feels brand new
I own a 2009 V6 Accord currently looking for a si for the summer the chip storage is no joke especially in Ontario right now
Totally feeling it here in Alberta too!
What? no comments??? Thanks for your vid
Thank you for watching! Are you planning on buying an 8th gen Civic?
@@RideYEG I just got one for my first car!
@@Komdalkom Congrats! Let me know your first impressions!
Very nice car,i am considering 8th gen too, 1.8 VTEC Sedan with manual. EU manuals do actually have 6 gears and are unfortunatelly very rare,.most of them, are 1.3 Hybrid CVT from what i see which is a shame.
1.3 Hybrid would’ve been super cool in 6 speed manual! Thanks for watching
@@RideYEG indeed but they are cvt only. Most 8 gen. Civics (eu variant) from 2006-2012 are hatchbacks that look kinda like ufo, but there is a wagon variant on 2012 + (9. Gen) so thats cool too 😀
Wish we got the EX-L manual here in the states. Looks very nice. 👍

India gets round tail lights in the 8th generation Civic. Looks good
i bought one a few days ago with 190 thousand miles and it's a great car but i have to do some cosmetic work on it and i have to put the engine mounts on it because the car vibrates a lot inside the driver's cab

Can't believe you got that mileage out of it? Filling up between 35-40l and getting upwards of 550km is crazy. The claimed mileage for that vehicle is a lot lower than that.
Really? That’s pretty in line with what’s advertised I thought. 25-35 mpg something around there? I do a decent amount of highway, I drive pretty light/smooth and I don’t drive in traffic often so those could be factors.
@@RideYEG Yeah, 25-35 mpg is correct with what's advertised. The way it sounded in the video was more 35-40 mpg. Maybe it's just me, what kind of range did you typically see with mixed driving conditions if you don't mind me asking?
@@jasonafonso2246 maybe 480-520km on the conservative end
@@RideYEG Thanks for replying man, I'm getting this model this weekend. So really interested in economy and performance. If you'd like I'd post my mileage here after a week's commute just to see how it holds up.
@@jasonafonso2246 certainly would love to hear what kind of mileage you’re getting. Enjoy the new ride!
Your coupe is about 450 lbs lighter than the si sedan. And it’s only 1/2 second slower on the 0-60 than the si.
Build up the 1.8 engine and you will have a lite weight screamer.
The manual coupe ex is very rare.
Don’t sell it!
I've always been a Toyota guy. But I was looking for a fun car, like maybe a Celica. Couldn't find one but I found an '09 Civic EX Coupe with a 5 sp manual. I concur with the review of the drivability, but I'm really disappointed in the quality of the interior. Lots of cheap plastic, much of which was broken when I bought it -- shift knob & boot, e-brake handle, both visors, little hanging hook behind driver, and of course the cruise control switch on the steering wheel. Additionally, it had a bad passenger side motor mount and an oil leak I have yet to solve.
Only other disappointment so far is the suspension. It does not take bumps and dips well at all, as compared with every Toyota I've ever owned. Overall, jury is still out on if I'll keep this. Speedy and fun to drive, but that could be said of lots of crappy cars out there.
Great review! How much did you purchase this for?
Thank you! These go for anywhere between low 5k to 7.5k here in Canada depending on year, mileage and condition. I did have to put out around $500 for winter tires though but otherwise minimal expenses!
Did you ever have a problem with the engine block cracking?
Big recall on these years.
I have a 2010 Honda civic. It's a good car Ya the visor is gone, as the rubber window trim around the windows is bad Honda is good however expect to have some problems with the body.
I really need that car
hey man im from calgary and im thinking about getting an 06 dx manual what are ur thoughts about it and how do you think will it perform on the winter?
Hello! As long as you have solid winter tires you should be alright, manual transmission helps in the snow too. DX might be a bit bare bones so I'd try to look for an LX or EX if you want a few bells and whistles. Let me know what you end up getting!
The gear shift is comfortable and has a good feel to it?
Hi , Is been 2 yrs of this video , I wish to know the answer to my question. DOES A EX [ 2007 ] HAS POWER + HEATED MIRRORS ? Or how do I find out that ? Please if you will.
I have a pretty modified 8th gen civic si. I've been looking at picking up a 5 speed 8th or 9th gen
Nice, what's making you want a naturally aspirated Civic? Not needing premium gas is nice tbh
R u selling?
Need help which car to get. Honda Civic 8th gen, any year like 2010 for ex. Or Honda Accord 2009? Which is faster, and good for a first car as a 17 year old going to school and work every day with it
If I was 17 again I'd personally go with a 4 door Civic for the fuel economy, nimble handling and small form factor.
The accord is likely faster (2.4L 4-cyl or V6 available) but imo handles a little heavier than the Civic. Your compromise might be the 8th Gen Civic Si with the 2.0L + 6-speed manual.
Let me know if you have other questions I'll try my best to help ✌️
This car definitely needs a sixth gear. At 70mph the engine is sitting at 3200rpm which can be a bit loud.
Agreed. That would make the car go from excellent to nearly perfect
Which one looks nice let coupe or sedan ? And year nd trim
Hi, my GF and I, we are looking for a first car for her (probably Civic 8th gen or Volvo S40/V50). 8th gen Civic looks pretty cool, but in Europe we've got 4-door version similar to Acura CSX in Canada (and 3-door/5door hatchback). Are there any differences between CSX and North American 4-door Civic (ofc except front and back bumpers, front and tail lights design)? And are there any problems with leaks from sunroof or any other leaks into interior?
Hey there are definitely a lot of CSX’s here but they’re hard to find because people love to hang on to them. I believe the CSX is a 2.0L as opposed to the civics 1.8L.
Otherwise just some Acura branded luxury features like upgraded sound system, leather heated seats, etc - similar to what you’d find on my EX-L. I have heard less complaints on the CSX, there’s a Type S version that resales for very high as well.
Much prop on the review, great production
Thanks man! Hoping to come out with more car videos so stay tuned.

I’m about to get a 09 coupe any thing to look for?
Aside from paint wear you should be good to go. Check the ebrake strength too.
@@RideYEG ohhh I come from a 96 Volvo so my expectations aren’t so crazy but this is a new car for me a lot more simpler and I’m happy if the cars safe n moving no need for any good paint on it I might rattle can some panels if it’s that bad
Does this exl come with stock footwell lights?
Do NOT buy an eigth gen with a 1.8 R18 from years 2006-2009. Your engine block could crack. (I saw this info when i first got my 08 LX.. thought "meh" ..) my block cracked.
(And so now 2023 where i live, the price of the repair was cheaper then another used car... but, is close to.. the price of the well kept high mileage SI i wanted, before biden took office. (Damn him!))
There are paint recalls, motor mount issues, airbag recalls, engine vlock recalls, and control arm issues.
Other then that, great car.
Mine has had most the issues listed above (not control arms), and i love it.
Im sour that im paying what i would of spent on that SI back then for this engine replacement.. that hurts. I wanna try a K series before they fade away. But on the positive, ill have new motor mounts, new clutch, newish R18 w/33k miles from japan... so im good.
Its pushing me to go thru entire vehicle, down to the weather stripping. Aside from the coilover setup, that limits whre i can go, this will be 1 of the most sound FA1s in my area.
Love Honda. Love the 8th gen.. (but buy a 2010 or 2011)
Is it reliable if bought used with 100k miles?
Depends how the car was kept but 100k miles isn’t that high for these cars
I’m sorry but how do you get it to 500km per tank? I rarely get 300km in one full tank. 😓 I’m in Asia thou.
Lots of higher speed roads in North America could be a factor? Possibly octane ratings as well. Where are you watching from?
Thanks for tuning in✌️
@@RideYEG Glad to see your Channel! I’m watching from the Philippines. I use 91 or 95 RON but those doesn’t make any difference. Even tried 97 & 100 RON, same results. Maybe it has something to do with the traffic too, lol!
@@ajperez9264 Very likely traffic and different driving styles! Do you run the A/C on it all the time?

No way close to 4000rpm
Is it an Si?
How many miles does this car last? I bought one 2008 with 122,000
There are some out there that have got over 300k miles as long as maintenance and care are put into it!
How does this car compare to the fit in terms of speed/handling?
I haven't driven the Fit but it seems like a really practical and fun car. I'd imagine the Civic just has a bit more power and "drive" factor.
“Fun” to get 0-60 in 18 seconds and the 140 hp very nice.. dame I miss my focus titanium with all the packages 2.0 160 hp stock and 215,000 when at fault pulled out in front of me. Ford should build small cars again. I hope I’ll buy. So the Honda only offers 16 inch rims and for me the coupe looks better and gas mileage and reliability is where your focus should be. Like a Ford. Lasts forever
How tall are you?

The double dash doesn't look that good and it blocks some of the driver's view. The 10 and 11 gen civic look a lot better.
Más aburrido que bailar con la hermana !! 😴😴😴😴
6000rpm, do you really think the engine likes it? its stupid to drive like this
Lol it’s not being driven constantly at 6k. Considering the redline on it it’ll be fine, it’s also a Honda.
The car kicks into full power at 3000 RPMs anything below 3000 RPMs in the 8th generation non SI Civic you are in VTech once you get above 3000 RPMs all 16 valves will be used instead of 12 that's why if you want to go fast in this car you have to keep the revs up
Yeah exactly. Civics are rev happy!
Have 208k on my 06 lx coupe
