It turns out my K-Force belt A-7540467 was too tight and caused all those problems. Genuine Parts 754-0467 (954-0467) was the correct fit and all the problems went away once installed.
For a video on how to replace the belt, this one is pretty good: • Lower Drive Belt Repla...

Much appreciated, E. My John Deere did the same to me today..and I bought the OEM belt, but 1/2" makes all the difference... Obviously 😔 I went aftermarket v belt and saved a few bucks AND I can now stop my formerly run-away machine.

Isn’t it the top transmission drive belt that governs reverse? How does the bottom being too tight impact reverse and neutral? My lower belt was replaced and used OEM and very difficult to thread in the tension pulleys. I hope I don’t have to do it again.

I have almost all new parts on my John Deere D140 and now it seems it has lost some power because it seems to be bogging down when I hit some thick or higher grass and almost seems to want to shut down unless I slow down.....I have wondered if the drive belt could have anything to do with this because I did notice it has some big cracks all along the whole belt....but after doing a google search it seems nobody is mentioning the drive belt for problems such as the engine bogging down and wanting to shut off when I hit thicker grassy areas and higher grass......

Strange. Nothing obvious comes to mind - I have not had that problem before. I hope you can figure it out!
