    TIP:
    The dowels you used to attach the top to the base, first dip the dowels into liquified bees-wax.
    They will be MUCH easier to remove when it's time for disassembly several years down the road.
    Beautiful work, by the way.

    This is great, I hope to build one based on your design one day. I just completed my first woodworking project a couple months ago, it was a crib for my first son. It turned out better than I ever could have hoped for. A table is such a cool thing to build. A place for your family to gather , share food and create memories. Beautiful work man. It would bring me to tears to see all of that come together if it was by my own hand. You take pride in your work, do things the proper way and don’t take shortcuts. That’s the mark of a craftsman IMO. Well done.

    I bought this for a wood carving seminar. I needed something light enough for an old lady to carry from car to site and easily set up. This did the trick. I used the clamps to hold my carving stand in place and they worked well too. I have used it since then for jobs around the house and am very happy with it.

This is the type of furniture I want to build. This truly is an heirloom piece of furniture. It will be around long after we are gone. It is like when I go looking at old pieces of furniture and I run my hand across it and wonder about the stories of all the people who may have owned it in the past. I put a framed copy in my late father's workshop: "Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, 'See! This our father did for us.”

    Very clever solution. I love the wave of woodworkers coming out of the woodworks (pardon the pun). It’s very inspiring and though many tend to gravitate towards power tools, hopefully this surge of craftsman fuels another generation to learn what we came from, which aids us to better realize where we’re going. Thanks for the excellent content.

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад

      Thank you for the kind words. I agree totally. I think you learn way more about the wood and put a lot more of yourself in your projects when you use your hands and hand tools. Power tools are great, but there are too many wood "machiners" rather than wood "workers" I think a hybrid blend is the way to go :)

  • @MrChickadee
    @MrChickadee 6 лет назад +12

    Very nice! You might already know this, there is a historic furniture type called "peg top table" that uses this type joint. Most Ive seen have a batten attached to the top across its width, this gets pegged to the base. Works for cabinets too!

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад +2

      Mr. Chickadee I haven’t ever seen that but I’m going to look it up now! I had just seen a picture of a George Nakashima table that looked like he didn’t something like this and tried it. My next table I do I’m actually going to attach the battens with sliding dovetails into the underside of the top rather than just gluing them.

    • @MrChickadee
      @MrChickadee 6 лет назад +2

      Here is a good one, look close and see the sliding dovetail batten. www.lutge.co.za/wp-content/upLoads/2015/10/Table-peg-top-stone-pine-3.jpg
      I have learned that most anything I can dream up, and maybe pat myself on the back about, was done much better by some craftsman long long ago haha. If you think about it really, traditional woodworkers around the globe probably tried every possible wood, and even every possible joinery method long before we were born. So most of the time, I just nod to them, think what I need, and search a historic example of what would fit the bill! Its rather freeing to never worry if something will work, when you can look at what HAS worked over thousands of years...

      @@ThirdCoastCraftsman I know this is an old video/ comment. I love your work and will be buying your plans for this build soon. I haven't done a project this big yet and would love the additional guidance as I walk through it. The one thing I thought while watching the videos is to make those battens via a sliding dovetail. Have you thought much about how you would do it? Presumably a entry point that can be covered by the end of the batten but will allow it to slide in? So half sliding dovetail and half interfacing with the bottom of the table? Also what were the dimensions of this table? I didn't see that on the description of the plans but wanted to make sure it would indeed fit my needs? Though I am thinking I could probably make minor adjustments to dimensions if needed. Thanks!!

    Absolutely beautiful work!!!!!!!!!!! The accuracy with which you use hand tools is stunning and a treat to watch. I have to say that you have got the style and proportions spot on. A lot of makers fail to get the sizing of the underframe right and sometimes lose the overall effect. Yours is perfect!!!!
    I agree with your comments on dowel sizing and grain structure. I have had some panic moments when draw boring and had a couple which don't want to reach the full depth, but I tend to do blind holes so that they only show on one side - this may be a factor. I love your videos, keep up the great work - Regards Dave - England.

    How much movement is there in the table top? I'd love to see a follow up video on how much the table moves from the breadboards and if the unstained wood shows through at the extremes of the movements. I've done something similar with a table I built for attaching the table to base for a table designed for tearing down, but I love this solution for a real stationary table. Beautiful design!

    Beautiful table. Those blocks that you glued to the underside of the table top - think I would have drilled and glued wood dowels through the blocks and into blind holes in the bottom side of the table top. Could even drill them right through if you wanted to see them on the top side, matching the dowels in your breadboard ends.

    I loved this whole series and build! I’m gonna try breadboard ends on a smaller scale first, like a coffee table. Thanks so much for awesome videos and guides!
