- In this video, we are changing a battery on a 2010-12 RT Can Am Spyder. Another video from my shop where we make accessories for Spyders. It's not a garage where we do mechanic but more a shop, store and studio. A place to have fun talking Spyders and little videos about small projects, nothing to serious. We will cover F3 and the RT series 2013 and up for the battery as well. I made one mistake in the video.... this is for 2010-2012 RT series Can Am Spyders....not 2013 as i do say 2 or 3 times, forgive me for any inconvenient, I did change the description of this video.... but did not have time te re-shoot or re edit a video.

Thank you, directions were pretty good. Saved me at least $100 in labor and seemed like this process was easier than the first method as detailed by Can Am.
Pierre - - - THANK YOU so much for this video!!! I'm a new 2012 RT owner and storing in the garage for winter here in Rochester NY. Got a Noco2 charger/maintainer and was hoping for an easy connect under the seat. From a Spyder Lovers community thread others recommended to "just do it the right way" directly to the battery but i didn't want to be removing panels and open a pandoras box and screw something up. I started w a Noco2D but realized no great place to mount it under there and unable to disconnect the unit from the wiring so i switched to the Noco2 w the X-connect or whatever the call the junction bw the unit's cabling and the connectors to the battery. Let them rest under the seat (not quite long enough to get exposed behind/under the seat. Your video was a life-saver in guiding me thru the process of removing panels etc. Getting back seat off first to raise the released seat even higher was great. Thanks for being so thoughtful to post your video. I'll be much more inclined now to do things myself and save some bucks in the process. Appreciate you!!
Thanks so much for the video. I have recently inherited my Spyder from my brother when he passed in October last year. I have had the pleasure of riding it for many months when he first bought the bike and about 18 months when he decided he was not using it enough and left it with me.
Batteries have been the bane of my existence having had to change them twice - these were done by the dealer who must have rubbed their hands in delight when I took the bike to them. The cost was over $200 AUS which I thought was bloody expensive. I had been using a charger to boost the battery but eventually that didn't work - so off to the dealer. Your video will enable me to change my own in the future,
The other issue I had/have is with the brakes. Front and rears don't seem to last terribly long. Once again, I have had to change pads 3 times in the last 18 months. Not sure if it's the quality of the pads or my style of riding? Either way, I reckon the quality is very suspect. Have you produced a video on changing the brakes on the 2012 Spyder? I've seen some others but the production quality leaves a bit to be desired.
Once again, many thanks for your work.
Thanks for the kind words, no video on that. You should go with EBC brake pads....that's what we use.
Thanks for the video. I was able to connect a pigtail for the battery tender by finding the battery under the seat and following the instructions to remove the plastic to get to the terminals. Good job!
Thanks Pierre! Just bought a 2012 RT-S and the day after I got it home battery died. Followed your video and I am back in business. Great video!
Definitely helpful, thank you! But... at this point in my life I'm not sure that I need the mental gymnastics anymore, just to swap out a battery.🙄
Thank God my son was helping me... OK, doing most of it. Having me out of the way was probably the biggest help! 😆
Thanks for comment.... ride on !!
Pierre, I've been riding bikes for a long time, but couldn't get my wife to ride with me, even though she said she would. We're in our 60's. So, I got rid of the motor cycles and got a 2012 RT SE5, with only 7K miles! Still looks new and she's excited about some short trips. 👍😎
Thanks again. I'll definitely be checking your videos out.
Just changed battery on my 2010 RT. Could not have done it without watching the video first. Found the first screw very difficult to remove had to use a slim ratchet driver and bit. Getting side panel back in was also a pain. Otherwise went smoothly.
Good to hear....
Thanks Pierre, Thanks for the vid. I was going to do an oil change and possible battery change on my new to me in August 11 rt and was wondering how to get the battery out. By watching this vid I found out how plus how to make the oil change easier by not taking off as many panels 👍
Thank you for your video. Am removing battery on my RT and your video was very helpful. The screw at the back under the seat is difficult to remove so I will replace with a bolt so I can access easily next time. Merci beaucoup, très instructif.
Thanks Pierre, I love my spyder, i want to install a battery conditioner for the winter. Watching your video…. OMG! It’s a lot of work just to change the battery! That is way too many things to remove!
I will visit your shop in the spring!
Changed my battery this last weekend, watched your video a couple of times. I found your way the easiest way about 2 hours thank you
Always like your straight forward videos. Love your products. My Spyder looks great with your accessories
You made a horrible job doable. Thx for the detail video and by the way my 2010 also had a push pin holding the large side panel
Excellent video. Helped me replace the battery on my friends 2012 Spyder. Could not have done it with out this video! Thanks
Thank you for this information!!! I was told by another video provider it would take three hours. Once I found your video it took less than an hour.
class act, ty very much. I respectfully would ad that taking out the center bolt on the gas tank plastic will allow more flexibility to get after the push clip and star screw underneath. Thanks again!
Thanks a ton!! Your video's are always great!! Thanks for taking all the time you did to go through this... much appreciated!!
Thanks Pierre, I wish I had seen this before I started exploring. I bought a third hand (I’m number three) Spyder RT with under 13000km. In as new condition. I had heard that the battery terminals loosen off and had a look under the covers and yes the negative was finger tight.
A squirt of gasket goo can hold the battery nut in place or a wedge of plastic such as fuel pipe.
Anyway thanks again, oh if you have Jig a Loo, (it’s made in Montreal) it’s great as a dry lubricant and ideal for those rubber grommets!
Pierre, great video. I just bought a 2010 Can Am, with of all things a dead battery. Have to get it off the truck this morning and into the garage. I'll check back and let you know how the battery swap goes.
Thanks, Love you guys, eh
Pierre, Australia's sun is a bastard. During summer, the temperatures are often over 38 - 40 degrees. This has had a major effect on the windscreen of my Spyder - it looks starred, like fine cracks through the thickness of the screen. I'm hoping some of your viewers may have found a way to polish the screen. The plastic on the bike is similarly showing its age. I have seen videos of a heat gun re-melting the plastic to bring up the shine of the plastic. I would love to hear your thoughts on how I might overcome these issues.
Cheers
That was a awesome video. It will be very helpful for my upcoming battery replacement project.
Thanks a lot! Never done anything like this, followed you step by step and it worked out great. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I have a 2011 Can AM Spyder RTS-SE5. On the newer models the battery is mounted in the front trunk. Can the battery be relocated to the same place of the newer models by extending the battery cables? Sounds like a better location anyway to have future access to battery for service.
Can you please do a video on how to jumpstart a 2011 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited
As usual an excellent how to video. Thanks.
Can you tell me....what dose PTT BUTTON on a spyder cam...2012
I was able to remove and replace my battery - without removing any panels, the positive wire with the fuseblock needs to be popped off the frame, the fuseblock is attached with a pushin connector, then there is enough room for the battery to come out far enough with the positive connector attached where it can be disconnected - but man - and extra half inch on thos positive wires would have made a huge difference !
Changing battery 2004 can am rt limited
you are a great help. Thanks for your time and effort
Pierre, it looked like a bottle supplied battery you put in it. I heard it needs to be a factory sealed battery. Us it ok to use a bottle supplied battery?
Thank you sir your information is a great help!!!
Great video. Thank you very Much!
I added glow lights to my 2012 RT SE5, do I need to put in a new voltage regulator?
Great video first and foremost, tremendous help, would like to add to it if I may, the 2 long bolts for the seat hinge have a couple sleeves, not sure how hard it's going to be to get those back in, your video entails removal, I could only imagine, waiting on battery now, also I bought mine used, 4,500 miles, and already had a chinese junk oversize battery in it, dont make that mistake, stay away from China at all means possible.and get the right size, I had to butcher it to get it out. again great help!!!!!
I think that it would be safer and more practical to always disconnect the negative post first to prevent accidental grounding when getting to the positive.
Thank you for your comment, i will take notice.
Your the man! Thanks.
Great video, Pierre. My question is: How did you get the push pin back into the slot for the side panel? Mine was flared when I pulled it out, and it won't go back in!
flared means...opened up ? If so then just pinch it to make it fit.
Pierre - Spyder TV Poliquin - Spyder Accessories thanks for the info... I figured it out right after I hit the"send" button!
Great video!! Thanks!!! Much better than Finless Bob's video!!!
Mr Finless Bob does lots for our Spyder community and getting us info, many riders turn to him for support......
If you put a piece of tape around the nut for the seat bolts it will hold the square nuts in place and they wont drop out.
Thank you for the tip....this is how we get things better, good information from you the viewer, good input, appreciated.
Allo ! As tu déja changé la pompe a gaz sur un RT ? Devons nous demonter la tank ?
Bonjour, non je ne fait pas ce genre de réparation, sorry.
Have you ever done a video on starter motor change 2014 RT SM6 ??
I have a question I have a 2012 rs Spyder I took my back break line off. It was my first time taking my tire off and I thought I had to take my break line off but I put it back on but now I have a break failure display. Can I just bleed the line like I would a car HELP lol
how can i get that custom floorboards if you don't mind
My 2012 RT Limited is not configured that way...
I got my battery changed on my 2011 RT but when I reconnected the cables the engine would not stop turning over even with the key turned off,. Any ideas on what I did wrong?
Did you forget to reconnect both (all) the negative wires to the battery?
Is it safe to say that the videos I've seen posted for the RT would be the same for the ST-S?
Battery Post Nuts, A Suggestion
Put the screws back in, finger tight, to retain the nuts.
i think the whole point watchin you video is to see how to take the side panels off . anyone can take two screws off and remove the battery
Wow, I thought my 08-GS ward hard, this is much more difficult. CanAm should have sent its engineers to Japan for some classes, the lack of ease of service is my main gripe against this brand!
The more of these I watch the more I think the design needs improvement. Working on them is a nightmare which if you take it to a dealer means expensive.
How to change the oil on a 2012 Spyder RT limited 5 speed?
He has a video for that too. Search for it
To change the battery you have to do all this? That’s some bullshit!!!
Thanks for the video though
My 2009 Can Am spyder Rs is not charging the battery, i replaced battery and it dies after about 15min of rideing
Vous etes tres patient, je ne le ferais pas mais j' ai noté votre téléphone
bonjour merci de ta video sinon j aurais bien galerer
My 2013 RTS battery is in the frunk
Is this the same for a 2014
No. The 2014 is located in a different area
merci pour t es conseilles a moi de jouet
haha "beginner like me"
Holy hell, why would anyone buy such a piece of junk? Any bike you have to completely dismantle to get the battery out is a deal breaker. Unbelievable!
I gather you’ve never ridden a Spyder…..
@@pierre-spydertvpoliquin-sp9082 I have. Was not impressed. I'll stick with my Goldwing.
Huge shout out for this video. I was able to do this on my own via watching video. Bought a mighty max battery off walmart.com for under $60 usd. Little tricky putting seat back in and found I needed to align before final tighten of bolts. My dealer would have charged me over $400 for this, 😃 luv the savings and I learned a lot about the bike.
good job, nice to hear....
Was it a bottle supplied battery or factory sealed?
