I appreciate you acknowledging that pirate problem was created by failed exploitive international policies, rather than just doing the standard troupe of "pirates are greedy evil terrorists."

Love the videos. Laying it down straight and simple. Pretty cool look at what's going on on the world's oceans. Between Pirates, kidnappers, rogue nation states, and the basic hostile marine environment, it makes for an interesting occupation.

Another excellent episode, thanks! We met pirates in the Gulf of Guinea in 2006. US NAVY 1, Pirates 0. Maddy, remember one critical thing…”I am your Captain now”! Carry on shipmate!

My only time through there, spring of '71, running the Straits of Malacca from Palembang to Medan and back on the Adabelle Lykes, we were on the lookout for small fishing boats running without lights. No mention or preparations for pirates. One night on bow watch I saw a couple of them. They would turn on a flashlight when we got close, shining it up toward the bow like, "hey, don't run us down!" By today's standard it was a pretty dull passage. I don't envy you guys today. I heard stories from some of the old hands about running the North Atlantic during WW2. Those guys were lucky to be alive to talk about it.

    Excellent Madeleine, thank you
One of your best videos. Great to have someone working at the coal face giving their take of wider issues facing mariners, plus showing how it works in practice
    More please

I am from Singapore. I know piracy is rather common here on the southern part of our island thoughout history, but wow I didnt know it was still this many this day and age. Now I understand why Singapore was featured in the pirates of the carribean 3 movie.

Pro tip: Do NOT watch this video full screen on your 4k monitor sitting at your desk or it will feel like Madeline is right in your face interrogating you like Batman.

Well Matty I asked if there were maps and you gave me a whole retrospective to just about current day and on the ze’ Google as well. My hats off to the Merchant marine and security teams. Usually on freighters you think food stuffs and basics people need. My mind drifted just a little and thought Captain Jack bags an Amazon shipment, wow perception versus reality. Here’s hoping you have a “non event” passage😊

I hope you never have to deal with an actual piracy attempt regardless of their motivation. Who would they get to play you in the movie? Holy crap the whole thing is a scary thought that you could actually be subjected to this kind of thing while minding your own business of driving a few thousand tons of rust around the world hauling Amazon packages. Thanks for the thought provoking videos as always.
    Be safe Maddy.

Another great behind-the-scenes video! However, if anyone's life is put at risk, I don't think contemplating the pirate's circumstances would help much. So, who operates all those factory ships...🤔

Im curious if your trained or armed to defend other than securing the vessel? I understand you may or majy not answer this question based on company policy. Ive seen ships using fire hoses and weapons to secure their ship but its never indicated if it qas mates or security forces brought on the ship like your Greek forces
Thanks again for another great and informative video!

Depends on what your cargo is. There's training for government contracts but for commercial ships there's no training, no weapons aboard.

Ahh, great job! A new idea..... Pilots! How much does a pilot charge? What is a Pilotage Unit (PU)? etc!.............Always looking for new ideas for your channel. My best man was a Sandy Hook Pilot, since retired.

Are merchant ships allowed to carry any weapons? Last I heard they were required to be unarmed if entering any foreign ports.

Not if they're 100% civilian/commercial. I've worked government contract ships with full armories tho. And the mate on watch carries a hand gun. Can't make videos on those ships.

Now I think, if the pirates tried to dress up a little more, they;d have a better image, I think part of it is when ppl see them, they just think, "you're not really getting into it, embrace your inner Captain Morgan and maybe we'd tolerate you a bit more of the piracy" LOL
Seriously tho, do you guys use those metal grates for the windows for RPG's like the armored vehicles use, so they blow up on that and not on/in the vehicle? Glad you had armed security on board over there, I would for sure want at least an AKs and at least one RPG on the ship, just in case.....Now that china and Russia have naval bases in Sudan and Djibouti, might make the crossings more safe with the pending BRI rollout. Kinda surprised the US doesnt use the Spectre gunships, those things can loiter overhead forever, and the pirates will have a guaranteed bad time from miniguns, beaufort AA guns AND the 105mm Howitzer....whos the captain now, mr Pirate man???

We covered the bridge windows with a "shatter-proof" film, but who's to say if it would've actually worked. Maybe for bullets, but can't imagine it would've held up in an RPG attack.
