    Are you feeling down? Having a rough day? A rough week? DRIVE A MIATA! This 2013 Third Gen (NC) MX-5 Miata is an inexpensive, lightweight and nimble little roadster that's an absolute joy to drive with the top down or up.
    This being my first ever experience with a Miata, I wasn't sure what to expect. This car is an important part of history, and has a loyal cult following, but the 3rd Gen, NC model is sort of the odd man out among enthusiasts. Well purists be damned, because this thing won my heart.
    It's enthusiastic, it's giving, it's vibrant. It may not have the refinement of a BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK 250, but it also doesn't come with their pricetags. It's cheap, reliable, and a go getter. It will put a smile on the face of anyone who gets behind the wheel, just as it did mine. I may have even shed a tear....
    Marvelous little car.

    That was the most heartfelt sales pitch I''ve heard in a while, and this is the act of a man falling in love with a car. I have no doubt about his sincerity. Right, we can't compare Miatas with BMWs and Mercs; those cars have the advantage of a lot more money, but dollar for dollar, the Miatas deliver. Miatas are, in fact, cars that in some respects deliver exotic car performance, but which somehow manage to do it, without sacrificing much, at 1/2 or 1/4 the price. Why not?

      Agree! I've never seen a sales pitch this good. He really loves this car, and probably sold it the same day. I've known that feeling since 1/04/2024.

    I just bought a 2012 Power Retractable Hard Top. OMG what a joy to drive. And the parts are NOTHING. Brakes/rotors/pads? Like $230 in parts. The Engine is a FORD engine, basic basic basic but all revved up and tuned. This car is going to LAST. (The one weakness may be all the sensors on the hard top). I live in the northeast and when that sucker is up it's nice. You REALLY have to try and make it slide out on turns. I'm talking 90 degree turns at 45MPH and it's GLUED to the road!!!! Its a dream car. People who scoff at it can race me on a windy road lol.

    I just bought a low mileage 2010 MX-5, with the auto/clutchless manual transmission. I’ve had plenty of sporty cars with full manual trans, but the Miata’s paddle shifters work great. Lamborghini and Ferrari have gone to paddle shifters, so the Miata is in good company. My wife and I drove it through hilly twisty roads this weekend, and they’re a blast!

    I have both the NA and the NC (manual). They have different driving dynamics, but you can tell that both are true Miatas just belonging to different times, and both offer fantastic driving experiences. I can imagine that given the right situation where an A/T might be a more practical choice (such as heavy traffic), it would still be a great drive.

    For what it's worth, I have a "06 NC, with an automatic and I do believe that it has a lock up torque converter in 5th and 6th gears If you push it in these gears with a bit of a load, say up a hill, the RPM's are at about 200 RPM higher than normal. This would be in manual mode on these automatics, so you're able to hold the car in one gear, until you use the paddle shifters or move the gear selector, up or down. On level pavement, in 6th gear, it's spinning about 2k at 60 mph. Btw, it's not the car, it's the driver. You can push this car just as hard as any manual, in my opinion. It doesn't feel as nimble as the NA, as I used to own a '91. But, and it's a big but, it's still a Miata.

    An automatic transmission may not improve a Miata much, but one might say, a Miata might improve an automatic transmission! Actually, in this case, the Miata is good DESPITE the auto... But I do appreciate how one might sometime just want to "lay back and let the car do the driving" and relax. I just wouldn't want to own or drive one. Next thing you know they'll want us to ride in self-driving cars. Where will the fun be then?

      @@vlenhoff I don't imagine it to be impossible, but if I'm driving this everyday in city traffic to work, it does more harm than good IMO. Plus, I have paddle shifters, and it's a 6 speed, isn't that basically the same?

    • @vlenhoff
      @vlenhoff 3 года назад +2

      @@CoryMck I respect your decision of getting an automatic, and this is in no way a form of criticism. I am glad you are enjoying your roadster!
      It is never the same level of engagement driving an automatic. In an automatic, you have a butler keeping things in check, which is very nice. Who doesn't want a butler? In a manual you, are in total control of the operation. You govern the machine without the butler suggesting things for you. It is pure joy to shift an MX-5. The clutch is a feather, and the shifts are buttery smooth, and super short. Driving a manual WRX with a heavy clutch for 12 years, I can tell you I have never ever been tired city traffic. I've lived in the cities all my live. The Miata's clutch is so light, there is absolutely no effort when using it. Your body will learn the timing for everything, and you can extract more fun an a bit more power when you use the manual. As we speak, today I am taking delivery of my first Miata: A 2012 PRHT MX-5 GT, 6 speed manual. I can't wait!
      I am only saying: Don't knock it until you try it. I have never bought an automatic in my entire life, and I have never felt exhausted or annoyed every time I shift. Heavy traffic is annoying, no doubt about that. Shifting my own gears is what I look forward to do, every time I turn the key. Perfect smooth gear changes for every situation. Like an symphony of machine and man dancing in our world.
      Warning: In a manual, seat adjustment has to be proper, so you don't hurt your knee. Never fully extend your leg to push the clutch. There must be a slight arc on your leg, when fully extended. I have heard comments in the past about the clutch hurting your knee, or making you tired. Much like bicycles, if you don't do it properly it could hurt you in the long run, or make you unnecessarily tired.

    • @CoryMck
      @CoryMck 3 года назад +1

      @@vlenhoff I appreciate the effort that you put into explaining it, but as someone who has never driven manual myself, I still don't see how linear gear shift with paddle shifters is really any different. Every explanation involves some analogy that might make sense if I had experience, but is there any palpable difference in experience? Because in manual mode, it only shifts gears down when I'm breaking, other than that, you have to tell the car to shift up, or you'll remain in first gear. So I can still rev high and change the gear, it's just easier for me and I don't have to worry about a third pedal or starting, and I have to go through gears linearly.

    First, Mazda dropped the name "Miata" in the early 2000's. So no, it's not "AKA Miata". ONLY in America are people still calling this car a Miata. I don't know why, because Miata sounds HORRIBLE. But MX5 does it justice. Miata sounds more like the girlie early models, where MX5 more correlates with the beefed up horsepower and suspension. Also, putting a hardtop on a roadster which is a ragtop car at is most foundational premise, is sacrilege. It's like something some boardroom geek would do to ruin a true roadster. Lastly, an automatic in a roadster like this is just as bad as putting a hardtop on it. The worst two options on this monumental car.
