Tonne is old money. She inherently understands these things as she was raised within the milieu where white everyday clothing is chic because it denotes you're a part of the leisure class meaning you don't need to worry about the domestic stress of keeping whites white.
Also things like Belgian shoes (the OG Summer Walk), Charvet and Hermes (AnythingButBirkin) have always been stealth wealth essentials with iykyk signifiers in addition to quality craftsmanship.
Lastly the Vuitton Monogram is an example of how Logomania can be Stealth Wealth/Minimalist. Those who are financially comfortable will carry handmedown (NEVER NEW) Vuitton monogrammed canvas because when you see One rolling the luggage or carry the bag people assume it's either legit or a knock off. So they'll never truly know if you're a trust fund baby or a law clerk.

I love that woman, we have the exact same style, including the watch as the only jewelry and ONLY long sleeves. Love her!

The capsule wardrobes also often lack cocktail and formal attire. Plus, I find my clothes wear out faster when I have fewer items. My life is much easier with 8 pairs of workout pants versus my boyfriend who must constantly wash clothes because he has one pair of jeans, one pair of workout pants, one or two shirts, etc. Clothes should make life easier for us. Granted, my closet is bursting with options; by the same token, I’m ready for pretty much anything at any given moment, which eliminates a lot of stress.

I'm a minimalist and really resonate with Tonne Goodman's style. I have a few go to looks/combination, a minimal color scheme, and if I want to try something new, I shop secondhand first. Always. It helps me mitigate the waste created during experimentation or chasing a trend. :)

In re environmentally friendly: buying one item, like your YSL tote, that meets the other criteria and eliminates the need for replacement and/or additional purchases, makes itself environmentally friendly.

You are right mentioning Carolyn Bessette.I always wondered how she would be today, and I feel like after I saw your video, I am thinking Tonne is the closest you can get. Everything curated and a reason behind everything. Like you said, how did she get to the scarves ect. Carolyn Tonne and some others are the "anti- influencer" as well. Like never really putting themselves out there. It's all practical and purposeful. But, it's really interesting and ironic that out of everyone- these are the women with the most taste and you want to hear more from. Love your analysis. Very thoughtful and intelligent.

So true! Women like Tonne and Carolyn, that have a defined sense of personal style are the opposite of fomo/influencer marketing today. Thank you so much for watching Jennifer!

Wow! I have just realized that I have had a curated wardrobe most of my life. I do not like to spend time thinking about what garment 'goes with' what garment so I wear only 3 colors: black, white, and grey. The capsule wardrobe reminds me of Donna Karan.

    • @MarysRoom

Thank you for saying her name correctly, and thank you for taking a look at her. She’s always been so mysterious to me, with such a strict tailored classic silhouette. I feel she didn’t get as good an edit as Grace did in the September issue. Tonne appeared at times exasperated, while Grace just sort of floated through and let her opinion be known in the halls of vogue.

thanks for the videos! I definitely notice that the further you go, the more it goes beyond 'just' a very good analysis or haul. I appreciate that you also introduce concepts such as the 10 principles of good design, and comparisons to architecture and other forms of art, which can be applied to so much more than clothes🤩 it's a really very in-depth approach! I'm looking forward to your new videos!

A bag is environmentally conscious from the perspective that if one buys a quality leather bag and cares for it and uses it for a lifetime, then passing it on to others, that is vastly better for the environment than buying a different cheap bag every year. And YES, it does take years to develop individual style. Experiment with thrifted, vintage, or, if one can afford it, RealReal items in youth.

I don't really get what's so special about her style. I live in Paris and that's how every chic woman in her 50s and 60s dresses here for a casual walk. I think though, what we should indeed applaud is that one doesn't think too much about what to wear when dressing like that and focuses on more important things

I dress simply but I find minimalism unnecessary and boring - why not wear a piece of jewellery, a pussybow blouse, a more interesting scarf (it doesn't have to be obvious or loud), something more flattering and a little more feminine? And Steve Jobs is boring and scruffy where Barak Obama was elegant and stylish in an understated way. I like androgynous but with a twist and always put together and reflecting my personal style and taste. Tonne's white sporty bag just looks plain, I bet most people buy it just because it's a designer bag, they wouldn't look at it twice if they saw it on a cheap market stall, it lacks a single original detail - for example I like simple, inexpensive tote bags (canvas, denim) to carry my shopping, but they may have an interesting graphic that shows I made an effort and that reflects my personal style, e.g. an unusual animal design, an interesting logo, a patch pocket, etc. So great videos from Mary as always but Tonne's style is not for me.

Minimalism, classy chic style shows zero personality. Kate Moss and the Olsen twins are truly stylish
