this song was a huge hit for Elton, not just because of its success, but because it represented Elton John's revival. In the late 70s, Elton fiercely battled drug addiction, and the eddiction took a toll that impacted his music as well. he wasn't having the success he used to be and his brain was just jelly every day while he dealt with a ton of personal struggles. Elton had a string of poor to okay releases before he released the album this song comes from in 1983. It completely revitalized his career and helped to solidify Elton as the legend he is today. Today he's been drug free for decades and has a husband and even a son and lives a happy life
He had gone through a lot of crap before this came out. This was the perfect song for him. I’m strong and I’m moving on.
One of my fav Elton John songs.....I'm 65 years old and remember listening to him when I was around 13 or so....I'm retired now but he keeps on going....a true legend.
This song is how you feel on a party at 5 am when everybody around you is sleep or drunk and you are still full of energy. 😄
This song is an accurate representation of how I felt while on acid once
This was Elton John's "resurrection" after the popularity of the seventies had waned. His financial problems after he bought English football (soccer for you guys) club Watford, the fact he came out as gay while everyone already knew and Elton was the only one who didn't know we knew. A middle-of-the-road song between rock and pop. And yes, so bloody eighties.
If you listen to Rod Stewart 's autobiography, Elton called him in 1984 to tell him he got married. Rod's response? "To a girl?" 😂😂😂😂
He came out as bi sexual in 1976 but by 1983/84, he got married to Renate. Around the time of this song's release I believe.
And also his split with Bernie Taupin.
Elton : "I'm gay"
Everyone : "Surely not"
I had heard on a program years ago that this song was in response to a lot of negative press he got for using men dressed as boy scouts in his stage shows.
Elton John is a master at reinventing his sound and in the 80’s, he was exceptional at making hit after hit! A true legend..
He was a great talent. He had deep musical knowledge and skill, both as a pianist and singer. He had a great voice, and he had a great writer that worked with him as well. Well, maybe more than one, but I know of one.
7/13/22, 6:37 p.m.
He sounds extra Billy Joel-ish in this one.
He's also brilliant at reinventing himself. I love Sir Elton. I grew up with his music!
This was somewhat of a comeback song for him I seem to recall?
@@MrManfly I think so, too. A he batted it out of the park!
It's about when his recovery really took hold, and he found true love with the partner.
They've adopted two sons , and are a happy family.
This was released 7 years before he went to rehab and 9 years before he met David. Their two sons are theirs through a surrogate, they are not adopted.
this was massive for elton... he had a run of hits around this time.... my favourite of this period ...Kiss the Bride
His career started in the 70's and after the death of disco he was still active and relevant. That's what this song is about.
This is one of my favorite Elton songs. I wish you would check out "Funeral for a Friend". And Lex, again I must say, that smile cures my "downsies" "If someone is missing their smile, give them yours" One of my favorite quotes and you live that quote more than you know
It's a great quirky EJ song that I love as well, especially now that I am older and will admit it, lol. Can't believe your suggestion for one of my all-time favorites for them, I hope they do it. Funeral for a friend is ridiculous. Burn down the mission and so so much more. Gigantic fan of him.
Yep - Funeral for a Friend along with Love Lies Bleeding would make a great reaction video.
This song is from 1983, in kind of a comeback era for Elton, who had mainly been popular back in the early 70s.
Brad & Lex, you'll love his "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Crocodile Rock" !!!!
Not Crocodile Rock. Even Elton didn't like that song and no longer performs it.
Those are two of his worse songs along with the awful “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”.
Sir Elton John is an unique performer. The question is not where he got his inspiration, (outer space, maybe) but who has been inspired by him. I am so much enjoying going along with your journey into the great Elton John! Waiting patiently for your next upload!! :)
I keep throwing out his name, but Elton has said one of the musicians who really inspired him was Leon Russell. I admit to knowing more about Leon than I do about Elton, though! Of course, his co-writer Bernie Taupin helped to make Elton the amazing star he became.
@@debrabeck9630 Leon Russell! Now there is a name I have not heard in a long time! A talented songwriter and session musician at the start of rock and roll! You are right, I do remember Elton John say he thought of Leon as a "mentor" and an "inspiration". HAHA, Leon had his hand in every genera, Brad would go nuts trying to fit him into a box! Thank you for reminding me of him!
"Sir"
Can't stand these forced feudal titles. The empire died decades ago
@@penderyn8794 I guess someone forgot to tell the Queen before she knighted him in 1998.
@@daleeladakus1966 I love Leon. He did so many different kinds of songs and was a great session musician. I’m particularly fond of the rocking Leon Russell, but I also like his “Hank Wilson” country album.
😂🤣😂 I laughed out loud at "Old school pimp" Lex you are hilarious!
We are privileged to be alive at the same time as Sir Elton John. Kind of like for people in Mozart or Beethoven's days would have been thankful. Incredibly talented, iconic.
Super catchy song! Fan of it since it first premiered on MTV!
It was his 1981-82 answer to bad press hit after releasing sub-standard music from 1977 to 1980.
Sorry mate, he didn’t go to rehab until 1990. This song was about the bad press he got in the late 70s and that he was still producing hits despite that press.
This is a fun, feel-good song. If you've ever watched Dancing With The Stars, the main male dancer in black is the judge Bruno Tonioli. Another fun fact: Elton had at least one song on the Hot 100 every year from 1970-2000.
Great opening song back in the day. Listen to any live version and you'll be hooked. A timeless classic.
I had never made the connection with Rock Me Amadeus but once Brad mentioned it I could totally hear it.
This is one of my favorite Elton John's song. It has such a positive vibe.
Great song & reaction. One of the dancers is Bruno Tonioli in his younger years, he’s now/was a judge in Dancing with the Stars! He’s one of the dancers in the front with black leather bodysuit(?) & cap😉
You guys should see that Biopic named "Rocket Man"....all the lyrics of all his hits are a reflection of what was going on in his life!
You should do movie reviews too! Love your content.
but....didn't Bernie Taupin write all his lyrics, and Elton put them to music?
@@karenmandeville7116 exactly
And he’s still standing.
What a true Legend.
My favorite from Elton!
For such an upbeat and positive song, it always chokes me up for some reason. Hits deep.
You guys should react to more Elton John…
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Honky Cat", "Crocodile Rock", "Candle in the Wind", "Nikita", "Skyline Pigeon", "Border Song", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", "Philadelphia Freedom", "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word"
🎹🤘
This was Elton's 80's comeback after his late 70's disastrous "Victim of Love" album
FINALLY....Glad yall did the actual video, some or just as part of the songs artistic makeup in the 70s and 80s as the song itself. ....you can follow the lyrics while watching the actual video like MOST today do...
Hey Brad, what Elton was saying in the chorus was, "Looking Like A True Survivor, Feeling Like A Little Kid"
I love Elton John songs. I've seen this video many times in the 80's
I'm still standing ! Always feels great to write that.
Thanks Elton John.
I think this may be my favorite of his. I love his fast paced songs! ♥️
This tune always motivates me!! Love you Sir Elton John!!!!🔥💕🔥💕🔥💕🧠💪🫀
Such an empowering song.
Love you, Brad and Lex, my favourite music reaction duo!
This tour was my first concert. I was 14. Never forget seeing Elton!
Great song for after a breakup...Nice reaction to it. Ty for doing this one, and have a great day!
saw him in a live concert in the 80's and he did that one leg up on the piano move!
I remember Elton John singing in our local pub before he was famous. It was the Northwood Hills Hotel, George the landlord told him to give up as he would never maker it. Wrong George
I loved it as a (little) kid, still love it now
Saw Elton 5 months ago, with my son, in NOLA. Elton rocked like a 20yr. old! The Tix were expensive, but the experience was priceless!
Gotta love Elton John if you love music.
his big reintroduction! it was good!
From his fabulous comeback album Too low for zero (some fabulous songs on this, the title track, another rocker - I wanna kiss the bride, and my favourite, I guess that’s why they call it the blues. All worthy of a reaction.
After success in 70s, his popularity was on the line.
He came out being Gay, 80s were not ready, but he came back stronger, even better. Kinda a slap in the face to critics. This was his song to them. I was in high school early 70s, And we all knew he was Gay, nobody said anything...Oh back in the day. We've come along way...
I'm glad that I'm still standing as well Elton. He's still rockin' even though I can only stand and no longer can dance.
Love this song,,and video.
I was the mix engineer on this in 1987. In the basement of studio 54. It was named soundworks.
Brad you nailed it. He is still standing after a break up. “Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind”.
Masterpiece
One of my fav Elton John sing is "The One"
TRUST ME On These 2 Classics,,
Elton John "Levon" & "Madman Across The Water"
fun fact. Bruno tonioli, the Dancing with the Stars judge was one of the backup dancers (the one in the red pants)
Something fun to look for, Bruno Tonioli, judge on Dancing with the Stars, is one of the lead dancers. Way young!
Fun video
He did a live performance of this song dedicated to Tina Turner, it's the best ever, better than the studio version. His voice is so good
Elton knows how to write a hit song.
That's Elton off the wall style, from his eyeglasses to his clothes he has so many looks in the 80's no knew what would come up with usually something wild take a look at old photos.
He did part of a concert in New York's Central Park in 1980 dressed like Donald Duck. It was a *great* concert... there are videos on RUclips
It's a really fun song and video. He loves his elaborate sunglasses.
"Elton John" and "old school pimp". Two phrases I thought would never be in the same sentence.
Brilliant :)
I’m pretty sure he’s talking about getting clean. He had pretty intense addictions and finally got help and he’s still alive “a true survivor”. ✌🏼💗🤗
Musically my fave song from him!
He is The Man. Dresses the best, best videos and music.....he has been around for 50 years, sells out every place he goes
Great vid
Elton definitely proved he was still standing.
In 1984 it had been a couple years since his last chart topping single, and this was a mini comeback album. So the “I’m Still Standing” sentiment has more than one layer…
Great song. A little trivia here. If you ever watched Dancing with the Stars, one of the judges, Bruno, is the front dancer in all the leather in front of the hotel in this video. And the guy he drops the glitter in his hand. And the black top & red slacks.& various short outfits. They played it on the show & he was so embarrassed. LOL! Anyway, Elton is a great performer & it a great song! Good choice!
Apart from his early stuff, (Tumbleweed Connection and earlier), I've never been a massive Elton John fan, but I do like this song very much.
Mad Man and Tumbleweed...not a clunker on either album...2 of my favs.
While I do agree with you, I feel a little like a hipster when I say his early stuff was best. :-)
It has been interesting watching you guys over the last six months or so, to see Brad's musical horizons broaden and his and analyses mature. Lex was there right from the beginning, but It would be interesting to see you guys revisit some of your earlier reaction tunes and see if they have more effect on Brad than they did six months ago. Procol Harum live for instance, I re-watched your reaction to this amazing piece of art this evening and Brad was pan-faced and unaffected by it, I reckon it would be different now.
Helped me to geh through my divorce, death of my dad within one week! So just for this song Elton John will always mean the world to me ♥️💪
The judge from Dancing With the Stars (Bruno) was the choreographer for this video.
Brad I get it. It’s like he is performing this song more than singing it. With great results.✌️✌️✌️
"The One" and "I want love"...by Elton
It’s an exuberant song, catchy. Makes you want to move.
First single I ever purchased
Fun fact.1:47, that dancer is Bruno Tonioli(Judge on Dancing with the Stars)
Released: 3 July 1983
I think this video came out before Elton John "came out" and yeah, I think it was a pretty good indicator of his leanings. :)
🔥🔥🔥
Film Clip directed by the amazing Russell Mulcahy, song from Elton's very good album " Too Low For Zero "
Taron Egerton did an AMAZING cover of this in the movie Sing.
This was his comeback after he fired his band and fell apart. And I think it's no coincidence that this was the original band from his heyday, and back to their old ways. The record was written and recorded in two weeks, and just about every song on it is good to great. It's weird that non-hits 'Cold as Christmas', 'Saint' and 'One More Arrow' are my favorite tracks on it.
Gotta check out later Elton. I Want Love with Robert Downey Jr in the official video and This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore with Justin Timberlake in the video.
This was kind of Eltons come back song. He had been leading a very reckless life of partys, concerts, drugs and traveling. He eventually got to a burn out point and went into rehab. The biopic 'Rockerman' shows this well. He came back clean. He started writing again and his music was as fresh as ever.
He wrote this when he was doing drugs in real life.
He didn’t go to rehab until 1990. This was released in 1983. The song is celebrating the fact that he’s still making hits after the 70s but it goes deeper than that.
@@Scooterboi60 He literally said in an interview he was feeling defiant because people were telling him he was losing it and needed rehab...so he kept taking drugs and sang 'I'm still standing".
@@PotSmokeGuy I remember. That’s why I said it goes deeper. It was also making the point that he was not a has been and was directed at the critics.
Bernie Taupin wrote this for Elton after their long split and Elton's overdose. Bernie really wrote it to let Elton know that he was doing quite all right on his farm and out of the spotlight, but thought it would be an excellent piece to usher in his comeback, as well.
Elton John had so many hits they had to knight him. Check out "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" next.
🦀☀️💫 Meet Brad & Lex...
Enjoy the song 💪🏼 keep fighting
Saw Elton & Billy Joel together in concert in Tampa '95 🤘🎹
Fun fact… the guy in the red trousers is Bruno Tonioli. He’s a judge on Dancing With The Stars.
Bruno also has a good singing voice but he does not sing very often.
All the Girls Love Alice!!!!! My goodness one of Elton's best. Seek and ye shall find it on Good Bye Yellow Brick Road
Philadelphia Freedom is still my favorite from him.
I think this was his official coming out song.
Such a visually satisfying video and happy feet song.
Very 80's. Very Elton. Very Very.
Such a simpler time!
The story is that Elton spent the night before shooting this video partying with Duran Duran I think. Into the wee hours. He was way hung over for the filming.
As i remember this was written after he got clean in rehab
He was drink af for this. However, he has gotten sober since and that's all that matters.
I think this is the song he was performing at one particular concert when he fell off the stage.
I wonder how many of my fellow English recognised Bruno Tonioli from Strictly as a dancer in this video
This was his comeback song after drugs and a lull in his career.
This song and the album it was on (Too Low For Zero) was a bit of a comeback for Elton. Great song and album. I think it means “look at me, I’m still around” remember he started in the 60s, was huge in the 70s and then had a lull after splitting with Bernie Taupin. A hell of a lot of his contemporaries had disappeared from the public eye in that time. Not Elton he was back baby!
Male dancer dressed in all black is a youthful Bruno Tonioli, dance judge from Dancing With The Stars.
