One of the things that this version of the song alludes to is the work that Princess Diana did with people who were living with HIV and AIDS at a time when it was highly stigmatized and when there were not yet effective treatments, but she wasn't afraid to be a visible face of compassion and kindness, raising awareness and also just providing the kindness of human touch to people who were highly ostracized and who might not have been touched by anyone else in quite a while because of the stigma of AIDS despite the fact that, by then, we clearly knew it couldn't be transmitted by touch. She also had many friends in the gay community, including Sir Elton John, George Michael, and Freddie Mercury. She was brave and bold and open-minded, just as she was loving and kind and generous. Princess Diana was much loved for a reason. And this song beautifully illustrates why people loved her so much. I was in London just a few weeks before she died, and I remember seeing "Di and Dodi" all over the tabloids everywhere we went, and it was the hounding of the paparazzi that led to the fatal crash that killed her. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard that news - spending the night at the house of a friend who had a computer and internet access (very rare at that time) because it was a football game weekend in Gainesville, FL, and I didn't want to be anywhere near campus until the game was over and I could get back to my dorm without having to park a mile away. He saw the news on his news feed that evening and came out to the living room where I was hanging out with some of our other friends and told us about it. It felt so unreal because she was so young and so loved. I'm crying even now watching this performance and remembering all that it meant and how beautiful a song and tribute it really is.

Elton John's performance here is emotional because Princess Diana was one of his closest personal friends, and they loved each other dearly. Elton went through a period of a few short years, during which his best friends died awfully. This includes the two men mentioned at the intro to this performance, fashion designer Gianni Versachi and then George Michael in 2016.
The original version of this song is gorgeously performed and produced. Elton's band in the early 1970s were three of the best ever backing vocalists of any band. Their harmonies added amazing power to Elton's melodies.

Everytime I listen to this rendition of the song and to this specific version in the church im always thinkin he made that piano sing that day with him. He was feelin it so much that whatever he wanted to convey arrived all the way to heaven where she was finally resting. Princess Diana and Elthon had formed a brotherly bond, she was there for our community when a lot of people weren't; she advocated for us when most weren't at a very hard time for us; and we will never forget her for that either. Queen of England and Queen of Hearts on this earth and beyond.

HM Queen Elizabeth has been my Queen my whole life... I'm still in shock over the news of her death. Her life was exemplary, just impeccable. A lot of people criticized her at the time of Diana's death for not returning to London, opting to stay in Scotland with William and Harry - personally, I think she made the right choice. She was shielding her Grandchildren William and Harry from press intrusion. Our Queen was vilified for many things during that time, but some fail to realise that everything that happened during Diana's funeral happened because she said yes, signed it off and agreed to it (along with our now King Charles).

She chose to tend to her family first, as anyone would.

He had other writers, but never with the same success or great music... crazy. Great reaction.

I don't know if anyone will remember this, but when this version first released, it actually became the best selling single of all time for a period. I don't know how long that record lasted, but I always thought that was interesting. Of course for Elton, I'm sure that didn't matter nearly as much as the importance of his getting to perform this for a dear friend and for all the people around the world that loved Diana so much.
EDIT: So apparently it is the best selling single since the charts began keeping track, but overall is only (technically) second to White Christmas, which was released about 8 years before the charts began. And it seems it has retained that title to this day, which is really amazing to think about.

Elton was friends with Princess Diana so he really did feel it. That's why he was chosen to perform. God, that was such a sad time. She was a huge loss. The Queen and the palace reacted badly, not recognizing the pain of the British people, and the world, for several days. It brought about a change in how things are done. Was one of the times that the Queen made a mistake, a miscalculation. I'm sure there were others but I they don't come as easily to mind. In 70 years that's quite admirable.

I read about this just after it happened. Elton John was such a good friend of Princess Diana that he told people during that entire performance at the funeral he was on the verge of crying but he held it together. After he sang he walked into an adjoining room and broke down. Soon after he went to the studio and recorded the song and has never sang it since. Elton said he will never sing the Diana version again.

It’s so weird how you can remember certain days of your life. I clearly remember that Diana died on a Sunday and it was the first day of the football season. I was 12 at the time I’m 38 now I couldn’t tell you anything about any of the other Sunday’s of my life but I remember that one 26 years ago lol it’s mad how the memory works.
Elton John wrote most of his music, as in the instrumentals, somebody else wrote the words, sometimes people wrote lyrics that he then put to music, but he had a gift where he’d write the music in the space of about 20 minutes. Mad skills

as a English monarchist i had the pleasure of seeing Diana grow and become a beautiful and brave soul, most people outside the UK don't realise how powerful the monarchy is, her death is still a mystery, but such breath taking strength she flourished after her divorce from Charles, she was a truly amazing woman, RIP PRINCESS DIANA.

With Elton John writing the music and Bernie Taupin writing the lyrics to almost all of Elton John's songs, I think they are one of the best song writing pairs of all time. I saw Elton John in Honolulu in 1974 or 75. It was one of my favorite concerts of many I've been to since the late 60s. This performance for Queen Elizabth II was a very moving moment in time that I will remember. ✌❤

I had a paper doll(they were all the rage in the 80s for little kids) of her with all her fashions. I remember vividly the night she died. I stayed up all night watching the TV for updates and watched everything unfold through her funeral. It was honestly devastating. Seeing her boys have to walk behind their mother's coffin in such a public event at the ages they were...killed me. I have always related to Prince Harry - or Good King Harry as Diana called him - the most. I lost my mom much younger than he was when he lost his but as he's been more open and outspoken about his journey with grief in the last 10 or so years, I find I've traveled similar paths with grieving my mom. He wrote a children's book about grieving a parent years ago...I'm well past into my adulthood and it helped because the experience & loss happened so young. He's definitely his mother's son...and she would be so damn proud of him today.

Elton is a co-writer of most of his songs. There is no 'team', normally just two people.
'Writing a song' is three main parts:
    the words (lyrics)
    the melody
    the music & arrangement
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for this song
Elton then created the melody (how they are sung) and instrumentation.

Of course, there are lots of famous duos who write songs together, but it's usually the performer who is better known and garnishes most of the adulation. There's story told by Ira Gershwin about being approached by a person who told him that he must be so proud of his composer brother George because of the song "Summertime", and Ira pointed out that he, Ira, wrote half the song i.e. the lyrics.

JESUS!! What an absolute throwback this was for me! It's like the "New memory unlocked" meme. I was 11 years old when Princess Diana died, I still vividly remember waking up at some ungodly hour and for whatever reason I went downstairs, my dad had been working night shifts and fell asleep with the news on. I remember having to walk through the living room to get into the kitchen and the news of the accident being on the TV. It was a Sunday morning I think, or maybe a Saturday? I remember I wasn't at school. Anyway, the whole thing was HUGE in the UK, perhaps it's initial impact was much more widely felt than the death of Her Majesty The Queen due to the circumstances being a car accident, rather than old age as it was with The Queen being 96, you know?
Random fact, my dad was able to meet The Queen once at Buckingham Palace while receiving a medal, and I've met both Prince Philip and Prince Harry
