I used to fish on NY stateland near where I live. Beaver had established a series of large ponds over a period of 20 years or so. There was a diversity of wildlife including Wood Turtles. For some reason the Department of Environmental Conservation saw fit to remove the Beaver dams, thus draining the ponds. One would think that Beaver, and construction of dams are beneficial in that they create wetland areas. DEC is supposedly all for preservation of wetlands not habitat destruction. ??

I watch over a population in an urban landscape where I’ve managed habitat and people and the results are IMPRESSIVE!!! The population is growing and the communities involved actually protect them and live with them in their yards. I’d say we have over 50 plus and everyone finds this hard to believe. Habitat management and giving them what they need is key to keep them off roads. I can often find 5-11 in less than 15 minutes at the right time of year. The nesting is still a problem.

I found one in Springfield,MA 10-10-2020. It was in the middle of the road Upside down on his back. I was able to right it, and it ambled over to the pond. It was in Hillcrest Park Cemetery .

Always love finding wood or box turtles here in southern Rensselaer County. Fishing one spring along a stream, I noticed right where the stream made a sharp curve in a muddy section, not covered by water, you could see the mud in various spots was bulging up. It turned out these were box turtles that were digging up through the mud, emerging from hibernation.

Doesn't the placement of the tracker on the female's shell make it more difficult for successful mating to occur?

I wouldn't mind doing this, I do this sort of thing for fun. I caught a wood turtle last week in Marlborough, CT near where I currently live.

Why hog the turtles all for yourself? Other people want to enjoy them too. Seems rather selfish
