CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Determined to stop another disaster from happening, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) chases down a suspected terrorist, only to realize he's wrong.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A time capsule containing a cryptic message about the coming apocalypse sends a concerned father on a race to prevent the horrific events from unfolding as predicted in this sci-fi thriller directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City) and starring Nicolas Cage. 1958: As the dedication ceremony for a newly constructed elementary school gets under way, a time capsule containing student drawings of the future is buried on the grounds and scheduled to be unearthed on the school's 50th anniversary. Instead of submitting a drawing, however, one little girl scribbles a series of seemingly random numbers on her paper before it is buried. Fifty years later, the time capsule is unearthed for a new generation of students to examine. Young Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) is one of those students. The mysterious sequence of numbers falling into his possession, Caleb takes the paper to his father, Professor John Koestler (Cage), for examination. Studying the numbers, Professor Koestler soon discovers that they aren't random at all, but an encoded message containing the precise dates, death tolls, and coordinates of every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. Not only that, but the document also indicates that there will be three more such events, the last of which indicates a doomsday scenario that appears directly tied to Professor Koestler and Caleb. His desperate plea to authorities falling on deaf ears, Professor Koestler realizes that his only hope for preventing more lives from being lost is to take personal action. Though the author of the prophecies is no longer living, Professor Koestler is eventually able to track down her daughter Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne), and granddaughter Abby, who reluctantly agree to aid in the investigation. As the final date on the list draws near, Professor Koestler enters into a frantic race against time to prevent destruction on a global scale, in the process realizing that in order to save millions of lives, he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

how much kinetic energy does this train have jesus
Hundreds of times more than what it would have in real life lol. If this scene had taken real physics into account, the train would have lost most of its kinetic energy when dragging against the tunnel wall and floor and smashing into the tunnel barrier, and it would have likely stopped somewhere in the tunnel well before reaching the station.
@@jaredevans8263 Force equals mass times acceleration

I don't know if it is just me, but I love how they kept with a greyish color scheme. It is just so genius how to created this scene and seen so many people die without the gore. It is so chilling
i mean one scene had like a splash of blood but other than that yeah
I think the effectiveness of the scene lies in just how realistic it feels. Of course the train's station-wide slide show does give physics (particulary the concept of kinetic energy absorption) a massive middle finger but most horror movies like to treat human bodies like blood grenades that paint entire rooms red with one tap or hear some tense horror music in the background to make that heartbeat speed up but here you don't have any of that. No tense music, no explosions, no excessive gore. You only see the train (unrealistically) mowing down entire crowds of people and flinging them all over the place as they run and scream in terror. It's such a simple yet incredibly effective way to instill fear into the viewer

When that train crashed into ruins the world
Railroad engineer (36 years) here. Can confirm that minor electrical fluctuations regularly cause rail switches to randomly change direction. Also, trains violently derail when going over switches even when they are stationary, and the depiction of the train as carrying enough kinetic energy to crash through several brick barriers, dozens of pillars, hundreds of humans all while the brakes are applied at full emergency is entirely accurate. Bravo bravo a real standard for depictions of trains in movies
average day on the MTA huh...? dammit.
I swear I saw a comment like this on another video about a train crash in movies.
It might be accurate for the trains YOU were driving (assuming a class 1 railroad like BNSF, UP, etc), where the trains are routinely >5000 tons. For the MTA though, those trains are around 180-200 tons. Lot of difference there.
Shut up
That's swipe
0:38 Ye.
Ah
This movie is so intense for a PG-13 movie, seeing so many innocent people just die in such a violent event.
You would know huh mister killer?
Ya cause it's not the same! These days I only kill people if I think they are horrible people, it's no where near the same as a plane of innocent people dying so violently when all they were trying to was get to point A to B!

Why stop there? Clearly they don't give a damn about physics, so why not have the train continue to fly sideways up the stairs and onto the streets of Manhattan, where it can crash through the Empire State Building, hit a ramp in a skatepark, and launch into the sky, hitting and destroying the Moon?
IMM DEADD😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Because it's a movie, not a parody. It's not supposed to be realistic but at least look "believable" while you're caught up in the movie. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who don't really know physics and never notice that kind of thing.

I'm impressed with the fact that this scene was filmed without excessive gore yet manages to be very harrowing. It has some implausible features involving basic laws of physics, but HEY, it's a movie. Whadaya want ? Plain ol' boring realism? This is where suspension of disbelief comes in, and the sci fi genre taps into people's desire for the fantastic to relieve them from the monotony and tedious predictability of the mundane.

That train cant destroy 10 support deams without losing all its movement. Those beams arent just something you destroy. It wouldnt most likely destroy the first one
It’s all for entertainment.
I agree though.
Depends on how fast it is going.
No it could not break those beams. It could break on beam but the train would be destroyed upon hitting the first one
Afterall, it's thick concrete with some iron bars in it versus long metal can
Seriously guys??? You don't seem to know what forces a present even at a low speed crash. May the first waggon will be ripped apart by a beam but the ones behind will push the wreck through a lot more of them.
When hundreds of tons are crashing with a speed of 60 mph head on against a beam about 20 inches, there won't be much resistance.

if the train was traveling at 1 km/min, 500 meters before the station start/end, and the train weighs around 85 thousand pounds, the drag would be 1 km/min, the train would start to slow down drasticlly, might not even have hit the station. but if it did, then let's say we add to the drag 0.2 km/min drag every pillar it hits, the drag would be enough to stop the train before it hit the other train.
An MTA has the Speed of 88,5 km/h, then consider the lenght and weight and you have to understand that all the wagons are pushing from behind even if the first has hit multiple objects the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight... wagon are still moving forward pushing and pushing. @@robertcarr159 ok...
That seems to happen a lot in movies and TV shows.
The ones between the pillars and the train have a slightly higher chance of survival than those running sideways at that point.

Why did the train begin departing even though Transit Police were onboard trying to stop someone? Pretty sure they would hold the train at the station until an arrest is made or the situation is resolved and everyone involved is off.
why are you arguing against logic in this movie when you saw the train skid through the entire station on its sides barely losing any momentum
bill5260
Also, why is the train pulling out throwing off sparks from the wheels (the running rails are used as the current return for the power comming from the third rail is though I never seen a train spark at this point). The whole scene seems weird but probaly because I am not seeing it in context.
The train crashing through the station speeds up after hitting the column right
before it jumps up onto the platform
plateshutoverlock Using logic, the train would've stopped after crashing with the tunnel column, but instead it rammed at least 12 concrete structures while at full speed
I could see why this is called a subway hell because the devils lurking in the subway changed the track so the train could crash
This is actually very accurate. My grandfather was an architect and his firm designed the subway. It was during the depression so that built the collums out of plaster of paris and stale bread.

This is honestly one of the many movies that didn't bother me when scenes like this happened, final destination really bothered me, this is more realistic than any of that crap. And I also love how he saves that woman and the baby
Peter I Love
This is way more unrealistic than Final destination in FD you are just unlucky bc anything can happen but in this one the carts get more speeds after the crash
Yeah, despite the fact that literally hundreds of others were killed lol.
And this subway is invulnerable with concrete walls, it still speeds up with the impacts the train took
Meanwhile final destination has a train crash which is 100x more realistic than this lmao.
People witness a whole subway train flying into the platform and will STILL run forward. Thankfully there's this Wilhelm guy to add to the madness
2:12 of course they put a. Cam in the cab as everyone dies
Oweninatior Bob where is the cameraman? I don’t see it.
It is a mounted one
In the cab when the people are ran over
Okay I can tell BBC Three to see where the cameraman is.
Oh thanks
