    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Determined to stop another disaster from happening, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) chases down a suspected terrorist, only to realize he's wrong.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    A time capsule containing a cryptic message about the coming apocalypse sends a concerned father on a race to prevent the horrific events from unfolding as predicted in this sci-fi thriller directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City) and starring Nicolas Cage. 1958: As the dedication ceremony for a newly constructed elementary school gets under way, a time capsule containing student drawings of the future is buried on the grounds and scheduled to be unearthed on the school's 50th anniversary. Instead of submitting a drawing, however, one little girl scribbles a series of seemingly random numbers on her paper before it is buried. Fifty years later, the time capsule is unearthed for a new generation of students to examine. Young Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) is one of those students. The mysterious sequence of numbers falling into his possession, Caleb takes the paper to his father, Professor John Koestler (Cage), for examination. Studying the numbers, Professor Koestler soon discovers that they aren't random at all, but an encoded message containing the precise dates, death tolls, and coordinates of every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. Not only that, but the document also indicates that there will be three more such events, the last of which indicates a doomsday scenario that appears directly tied to Professor Koestler and Caleb. His desperate plea to authorities falling on deaf ears, Professor Koestler realizes that his only hope for preventing more lives from being lost is to take personal action. Though the author of the prophecies is no longer living, Professor Koestler is eventually able to track down her daughter Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne), and granddaughter Abby, who reluctantly agree to aid in the investigation. As the final date on the list draws near, Professor Koestler enters into a frantic race against time to prevent destruction on a global scale, in the process realizing that in order to save millions of lives, he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

    how much kinetic energy does this train have jesus

    • @jaredevans8263
      @jaredevans8263 5 лет назад +1321

      Hundreds of times more than what it would have in real life lol. If this scene had taken real physics into account, the train would have lost most of its kinetic energy when dragging against the tunnel wall and floor and smashing into the tunnel barrier, and it would have likely stopped somewhere in the tunnel well before reaching the station.

      I think the effectiveness of the scene lies in just how realistic it feels. Of course the train's station-wide slide show does give physics (particulary the concept of kinetic energy absorption) a massive middle finger but most horror movies like to treat human bodies like blood grenades that paint entire rooms red with one tap or hear some tense horror music in the background to make that heartbeat speed up but here you don't have any of that. No tense music, no explosions, no excessive gore. You only see the train (unrealistically) mowing down entire crowds of people and flinging them all over the place as they run and scream in terror. It's such a simple yet incredibly effective way to instill fear into the viewer

    Railroad engineer (36 years) here. Can confirm that minor electrical fluctuations regularly cause rail switches to randomly change direction. Also, trains violently derail when going over switches even when they are stationary, and the depiction of the train as carrying enough kinetic energy to crash through several brick barriers, dozens of pillars, hundreds of humans all while the brakes are applied at full emergency is entirely accurate. Bravo bravo a real standard for depictions of trains in movies

      It might be accurate for the trains YOU were driving (assuming a class 1 railroad like BNSF, UP, etc), where the trains are routinely >5000 tons. For the MTA though, those trains are around 180-200 tons. Lot of difference there.

It has some implausible features involving basic laws of physics, but HEY, it's a movie. Whadaya want ? Plain ol' boring realism? The guy survived. After the incident, he lost his right arm... but he realized he had something to do before getting medical attention. He grabbed the movies with his remaining hand, got out the metro and delivered them to where he once stole them. Knowing he restablished the balance of universe, he fainted in front of the cashier.
      When he woke up, he was at hospital. His wounds where healing. He then realized what happened: everything he stood for, fighted for, lived for... was wrong. His full life was one of treachery, deceiving, undermining everyone's happiness, in his pursue of easy cash, to keep an unworthy style of living. He saw hope in the horizon...
      Then a big burst of fire destroyed the hospital and everything on earth's surface. The End.

    if the train was traveling at 1 km/min, 500 meters before the station start/end, and the train weighs around 85 thousand pounds, the drag would be 1 km/min, the train would start to slow down drasticlly, might not even have hit the station. but if it did, then let's say we add to the drag 0.2 km/min drag every pillar it hits, the drag would be enough to stop the train before it hit the other train.

    • @LA-st6dq

      An MTA has the Speed of 88,5 km/h, then consider the lenght and weight and you have to understand that all the wagons are pushing from behind even if the first has hit multiple objects the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight... wagon are still moving forward pushing and pushing. It is very likley that the train is very destructive when it derails, it won't stop until the last wagon has lost its kinetic energy.
      Search train crashes/derails in germany, you will be disgust what a train can do.

      @@LA-st6dq True, but the fact that the train operator hit full brakes and the train wasn't even braking until the last scene where it somehow went from 88km/h to 20km/h immediately is unrealistic

    • @LA-st6dq
      @LA-st6dq 4 года назад +4

      @@wietick5677 The train derailed, the brakes did nothing and not even had a second to function. It was literally a mass of solid metal flying/pushing through the tunnel until it could expand in all directions in the station.
      You can see before the end one wagon separates and the rest also flips and expand sideways to a chunk, either one of those by the time could slow down drastically, because it was slowed down because of the things it hit and slipped on.
      This train crash is not for us to estimate, only people that research actual train crashes either as their hobby or because they work for the government/police/emergency rescue.
