Krakatoa was only the _second_ most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history, and it could be heard over 3,000 miles away. *3,000 miles away.* Yellowstone’s eruption would be a thousand times bigger and more powerful. • @JackMellor498
      @JackMellor498 4 years ago +224

      I actually think they overdid it.
      A supervolcano like Yellowstone doesn’t explode like a gigantic nuke going off.
      You should give the BBC/Discovery Channel TV movie Supervolcano from 2005 a watch, it does a much better job of realistically depicting a Yellowstone eruption.
      It would more likely be a whole bunch of VEI 5 (Mount St Helens sized) eruptions across the width and breadth of the caldera, unzipping it if you will, and after a long period of eruption, they’l coalesce into one large vent, before that will then collapse to form a new caldera.
      What I’m getting at is that it’s a gradual process, a violent one to be sure, but moe gradual than the overly Hollywood-ised thing of it being one massive blast.
      Ground deformation does occur, but it doesn’t bubble up in like a 50 storey balloon, that’s absolutely ridiculous.

    Remember they're playing this one on easy mode to survive. That means the explosion is only 20% the full size on hard (120% on expert mode), multiple effects are disabled, ash does not disable engines and fire burns much slower. Also gravity for most active entities has been reduced by 75% to make them fall slower.

    Fun fact: In 1883 an Indonesian volcano named Krakatoa violently erupted, and it was so powerful that anyone within 10 miles of it was instantly killed by the sound of the eruption alone. That eruption is speculated to be *at minimum* 100-1000 times weaker than an average eruption from Yellowstone, so everyone in the scene (even the people in the plane far away from the initial site) would've realistically died immediately
