It’s fun for me that people need an intro on gouache. In France, gouache is what you use as kids during art class. Because it’s so versatile and because you don’t really waste anything. If you pulled too much paint out of the tube you juste let it dry and you reactivate it with water at the next class. If you go to France go to any supermarket and you will find a cheap pack of gouache in the school supply aisle.
@@lisamccort6777 of course! You're kindly welcome! I'm mainly a draftsman, but I adore watercolor & gouache. Here are a few things I wish I'd known to begin with, product-wise, in case it might be of use to you: I've heard "Marie's" gouache to be a great starter gouache, and it's supposedly pretty affordable. (I prefer Holbein, but it's extremely expensive!) Holbein, Winsor and Newton, M. Graham, & DaVinci offer giant tubes of titanium white gouache. I'd go for a large tube of W&N titanium white to start as you'll end up using it most, especially if you're mixing watercolor into it to create colored gouaches. It's a great trick, but it's not perfect. (I recommend titanium white/permanent white over a flake white or any other as it's not a 'warm' white.) I've personally tried the gouache made by Arteza, & it's not only affordable, but it is a great student grade gouache to start with. I use it all the time and save my Holbein for commissions, etc. As far as paper goes, I like to practice using the Canson XL watercolor paper rather than on pricey cotton, (again, I try to reserve the cotton for client pieces,) use synthetic brushes that are normally for acrylics rather than softer watercolor brushes, (because gouache is a bit of a heavier paint,) but that's all personal preference. I can say that Canson XL paper is a good choice economically speaking, as are the cheap synthetics. Above all, have FUN! 😉 *EDIT: Always bring your watercolor paint to your gouache, & never bring your gouache into your watercolor palette to avoid contaminating your watercolor palette with the opaque paint! ;)
You are a very good teacher, clear, and methodical, which is good for me since I am trying to learn the basics of painting with quash looking forward to more of your videos
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I used gouache once in art school and never tried it again. It's been so long that I forgot anything about it and was afraid to get started. I'm not now! Thank you again.
This was so informative! I’ve been trying some projects with gouache but was really confused about how it worked. This was so clarifying and helpful. Thank you!
This is one of the best vids I've seen for introducing gouache. The comparison to different mediums and the demonstrations are great. Thanks for the vid! 👍
I have been an advanced watercolor artist for years and came across a project where acrylic paint was needed. I used acrylic in the past and I have been successful but it is a challenge. This time used gouache because its closer to watercolor in the sense of how it feels and going back to blend if needed. This video did help a lot with learning the first few things before I practice for the piece that was being made.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a basic comparison video like this. I absolutely love how much you emphasize being kind to yourself. I’m definitely someone who tends to beat themselves up if it’s not right the first time. ❤️
I watched this during my lunch break today. I loved the information...I couldn’t wait to get home tonight and try it. What fun....so much to learn. Thank you Sarah for helping me grow, even when I didn’t know I needed to.
Wow! I have watched a LOT of videos on Gouache and this is the first time I've come away actually understanding this paint and how to use it. Thank you so much Sarah for taking the time to make this video. 👍😊
So excited you guys are doing gouache! I got some because I was drawn to the "like acrylics, only not a giant mess to clean up" aspect, but the huge flexibility of how you can use gouache is a little confusing when you're a beginner. You're such a good explainer -- can't wait to see what you explain about gouache, next!
I've known about Guoache for ages but this is the first comprehensive explanation I've ever heard about how it works and when it's best to use it!!! All I ever heard was that it is opaque and still water-based. LOL I can't wait to see the planned tutorials.
Thank you Sarah for the Gouache tutorial and for a month of Gouache! I know some people aren't happy about it, but I LOVE that you added something new! Would you consider doing a Gouache line of subscription boxes? I'd sign up! :)
Thank you, Sarah, for this intro to gouache (and Keenan’s pronunciation assistances). Your demo comparing watercolor processes to gouache really helped. And I like the leafs example, which shows another way to do the Hide and Seek project. :)
Thank you for this lesson. I have a set of gouache and recently noticed the color was opaque. I'm so happy that now I have a clear understanding of its usefulness.
Have been doing LMA tutorials on my own with pan paints since May, but decided to order the September box so I can learn how to use goache. Very excited to start the tutorials and to have my first LMA box including reference photos and written instructions.Thank you, Sarah!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Very clear and easy to understand. I look forward to trying them. I already have some, but was intimated to try them. Now I will, thanks to you.
THAAAANK YOU VERY MUCH! I liked this intro a lot, it was helpful for me, a beginner.. I think it’s wonderfully excuted 🤩 thank u again for this vid and for sharing your experience with the world! 😍🎨🌎
This tutorial was so helpful. I have gouache paints I purchased but haven't used yet. I'm really green, not really talented but have fun painting and hope I can get better. I really didn't know what a good choice I made buying these paints. Thanks for the great explanation.
O.M.G.! This is exactly the video I needed! I just bought my first tube of gouache and I wasn't really sure how to approach the medium. So THANK YOU! Thank you for explaining it in such a great and easy way. And by the way, your camera guy, (sorry I can't remember his name!) is fabulous! He has the best comments. And he's right, that was a gorgeous blue.
GREAT TUTORIAL Thank you. I have BEEN WONDERING about gouache..purchased a large set I came across at a consignment store .. It said watercolour but I knew it was not your typical watercolor.. I'm so excited to try it...😀
thank you so much for this video!!! i’ve been wanting to work with gouache for a while since i found the himi gouache set a few months ago, but i wanted to get myself familiar with the medium first since to me it came off as intimidating to work with. this really helped :) thank you!!
What a Beautiful video, thank you for sharing this.I love gouache and when i'm out of it, i simply use the white paint that comes with the watercolors and dab a color i want in the white paint with no water(careful, not to much)and simply start painting,Beautiful gouache colors.I'm still reading upon it,cause i want to know more about gouache and your presentation is awesome thank you.🌹
Such great timing! I started watercoloring because of your subscription box back in November, and I found gouache a few months later, bought my first set from Arteza. I love playing with them, but watercolor makes WAY more sense to me, so gouache can get frustrating. I'm so freakin excited that a whole box is dedicated to learning all about gouache! And also, I am SERIOUSLY loving how the boxes are evolving. Sarah, your style feels like it's evolving and getting incorporated into the boxes and it has been SUCH a pleasure to watch it unfold. All the boxes have become so interesting and I am just loving the process.
I love it when you show new techniques and cannot wait to try the gouache. I have some white gouache so thank you @Barbra Loveless for that information.
So, this was b4 my time (with LMA, that is), but Sara you make everything so much fun and exciting that it's hard to get afraid of new things you haven't even tried! I can't wait to get further into Gouache!!!
Thanks for this introduction to gouache! I've dappled with oil pastels, and these techniques seem very similar. White is go-to! Can't wait for our first tutorial!
Thank you so very much for this informative video! I have gouache but never knew how to use it. I am looking forward to seeing your new projects using this paint! Thanks again!!
Thank you. This was really informative. Will you be doing gouache tutorials in addition to watercolour in future or will you alternate between the two? I really enjoy the watercolour tutorials on Wednesdays and would miss them.
Hello Stacy! We're going to be painting with gouache throughout the month of September, but we'll be back to watercolor for our October projects! You can check out all of the projects we have in store for next month right here: www.letsmakeart.com/products/monthly-subscription-box
I just started using gouache and playing around with it. So glad you will be doing tutorials on gouache painting! I love your watercolor tutorials and can't wait to try these!
U don't have to add white to layer with gouache unless that's the look u are going for but u can do thicker layers and u can go light to dark or dark to light even though dark to light is harder if ur not careful they night mix with the under layers
Great video, many Thanks I have a beginners question :). If I already have a watercolour setup can I just buy a Gouache white and mix it with any desired colour to make it opaque?. If so, would there be a need to so many Gouache colours? I have a feeling its more complicated than that :)
Thank you for this! 😭 I recently bought gouache to try it and it kinda stresses me out because it dries so quickly 😭😭 this video helped me learn more about gouache, will definitely follow the tips! omg thank you so much, this is very informative! 😭😭💖
I’m so excited for this! 🤗 I’ve been playing around with gouache for a bit and I was waiting for some gouache tutorials from this amazing channel! I can’t wait for ALL the gouache tutorials coming up this month! 😊♥️

Thanks for the tips! I have a couple of questions: 1. What does it mean to "work out of the tube?" and 2. Will those of us in a dry climate run into trouble with it drying before we can complete a project?
1. Working out of the tube means you put paint straight from the tube onto your palette and immediately start using it (opposed to squirting paint from a tube onto your palette and letting it dry before you start to paint with it ) 2. Gouache does dry fairly quickly in general so it is possible it will affect it, if it does then maybe keep a spray bottle on hand so you can mist your work and keep it moist if you want

Great! Another thing we're behind on.
Oh how interesting! But now that I think about it - it is a great medium for kids since it is so versatile!
I'm so glad that it's finally getting properly introduced to North America because I just love it!
I wish it was like that in Australia
It’s a shame more countries don’t do the same. It would be far more user friendly than giving kids acrylic to start with.
I can’t afford to fall in love with another medium 😭😂
I’m so excited for these new gouache tutorials 😬
Haha we totally understand, buuuut Christmas is coming up :)
Same! 😂
*You can add white gouache, (titanium,) to any watercolor to "make gouache" in a pinch. It's more convenient when done in a little ceramic dish.

I'm late to the gouache party and I have been bingeing tutorials. This is the best basic explanation by far. I love the leaves in this video.
Welcome to the gouache party!! We're so glad you enjoyed this video, thanks for tuning in and creating along with us!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I used gouache once in art school and never tried it again. It's been so long that I forgot anything about it and was afraid to get started. I'm not now! Thank you again.
There are not many detailed gouache tutorials on RUclips, thank you for this 💕💕
We're so glad you enjoyed it, Adriana. Thank you for tuning in! :)
