The microbeta breakdown is INCREDIBLE. This should absolutely be the standard for new V17s going forward so the audience can truly appreciate the mastery that goes into each.
In my opinion this film is a true masterpiece and possibly one of the best climbing films of all time. It accomplishes something very very difficult: it enables the viewer to understand just how difficult this climb really is. The final payoff is exceptional: I knew exactly where he'd fallen so many times and why, so I understood the meaning of getting through each move. I've never seen a film capture this before an I might have said it was impossible. Thank you for your hard work.
The micro beta breakdown was amazing and this is a very good film, but on showing how hard a climb is, return of the sleepwalker was really cool with the multiple squares with tries that were synched was amazing too to show how much those guys bang their heads against those problems.
A masterpiece. Both the climber, the climbing and the videographer. The part where Coleman explains the hardest sequence by the details is just exceptional. It deserved the use of JS Bach cello suite.
When he drops the second jump move at 15:27, instead of yelling puts his jacket on and says "i can do it again" is an amazing insight into his mindset and determination, no frustration, just relentless focus.
That’s what mastery looks like. And you will find no better example of someone climbing for the “right reasons” than in this vid. Tears when he latches the final hold.
This video had everything. The drama with him pushing through having his car flipped, the detailed beta breakdown for "the move", and then his thoughts re: the grade question. Also loved intersplicing vids from other climbers who have done or worked the boulder (Noah Wheeler, Shahar, Geiman, Raboutou). This is probably the best video documenting a first ascent I have ever watched.
Following Nathaniel’s journey over the years during the transition from comp climber to rock climber is so inspiring! Putting down such a masterpiece of an FA is the perfect conclusion to the intro of what’s to come!
One of the best videos ever. Homage to the history of the stand start... the atmosphere with the crowd projecting it. The intensity of the solo sessions. The aesthetics and attention to detail during the narration of the key move....
Videos like this really put into perspective that the point is the process because the send go always looks so clean it's hard to fathom how difficult these boulders can be. Inspirational as always
What an amazing sport climbing is, and what an amazing climber Nathaniel is. I'm so grateful to be able to watch such incredible feats portrade so beautifully. Thank you mellow crew and all for sharing these experiences with us.
unreal what Nathaniel could do on that hold set day in and day out. Glad he made it out in one piece. Beautifully put together Neilson, climbing history was set in stone that day.
Beyond his climbing abilities that are absolutely insane, this guy has some of the best climbing videos out there (footage quality, soundtrack, story line...). What an artist 🙏!
Amazing film, love the foreshadowing when him finishing the boulder is played in the fast sequence of short clips while he talks about how it was a nice process to try with many others.
Wow! What a masterpiece of a film! The climbing itself is amazing, but the film itself sets a new standard for climbing videos. Most of them get boring and repetitive, but not this. The storytelling, the super detailed beta breakdown -- paired with the quality of the shots in that section -- and the editing are all spot on.
2:34 just starts this jaw dropping look and breakdown of this problem. This is how you do a video. Tastefully artsy, without being overly so, while dropping knowledge bombs keeping you wholly interested in whats going on. 👍👍
Always got the hottest beats to go with the legit editing. Unmatched good Sir! Defying gravity is a masterpiece that you bought the fire to add to it hats off to you.
To watch the meticulous choreography for every move was impressive. Also to hear the mental aspects of the climb. Kudos to everyone involved in this masterpiece. Nate powered through this boulder, physically and mentally👌. Filming, music, storytelling and edit were the icing on the cake. Thanks a lot guys.
Man, the intro shots with the breakdown of the crux on Defying was sick!!! This is the first edit in awhile that had me captivated the whole way through!! Alas congrats Nathaniel what an accomplishment. Big ups.
The filming and narration of the beta breakdown in the beginning is incredible. It captures the insane athleticism and beauty of high-level bouldering in a perfectly poetic way.
Have not seen a better bouldering film ever. The music, the detail of the sequencing and beta, the process and intricacies to hard bouldering, exceptional work from Ben and Nathan. I cried when he made it to the last holds. So damn good.
Silly crazy good filmmaking. Best climbing expose I've ever seen! Thanks Ben Neilson, and of course Nathaniel Coleman and North Face and Mellow for that!
Wowww, such a great video, the edition, the music, the silence, everything. I'm so so happy for you Nat, the way you climb but also your calmness and respect for everyone and everything. Hope to see you soon to enjoy more DWS sessions with the boat. Big hug from Mallorca. Best Seb.
Thank you for this one! Never before has a video inspired projecting quite like it. Lovely to see how it just seems to tickle everyone in the right spot! "Eight sessions to do the move. Fourteen sessions to know the move." Epic mindset.
It's sent, good news. Fellow boulderers, let us be glad, let us be grateful, let us rejoicify that Nathan could subdue, the wicked beta of this boulder too
The last part, the best part of the movie. I really smile and share my joy with you after sending it. And I must say you had the perfect light, the perfect moment. I was also touched when you talked about doubts and how much the transition itself gave you sending Defying Gravity. It's show me that you're also a man, not a machine. IYKWIM
Nice send man. I kind of love that you did it without the camera's, the phones, the people. Those were always my favorite moments in the mountains when I'm on projects.
Time for a petition to have Nathaniel roam around for a year and try the other V17s? Absolute legend to get this one in the bag!
Yeah get him on a real V17 👀
@crimpmac Darth grader says v13 section into v15 section is soft V17 so seems legit
@@MrMosebeydoing a v15 right after a v13 is absolutely insane wtf

will and his iphone camera disagree lol
Dude right hands down have to say sickest boulder vid I've seen maybe other than floating just cuz that problem is so sick
this! even for a new-ish climber like me got hooked throughout the whole breakdown. the whole thing was majestic af.
Between 2:30 and 5:00 is perfect
@@marrcl7986And Ts editing
the slowmo shots and detailed beta breakdowns are lovely, great stuff!
These REALLY set this film apart. Incredible
I prefer Will Bosi’s videography and editing ngl
Naa, they way over done and so 'Americanized' that this film is hard to watch without laughing.

underrated comment 😂
Crashes his car and still goes climbing. What a legend
He came all the way for climbing, why wouldn’t he?
@@Mike-oz4cv Because he crashed his car
I can just imagine the note he left, "I'm all good just out bouldering sorry for the road block be back later"

Best V17 in the world by one of the best in the world! What a perfect way to start 2025 - with another banger on Mellow by the amazing Ben Neilson.

Crashes his car and only worries about the impact on the session. That's the V17 mentality right there!
*16
Isn't that just general boulderer mentality?

Have you seen Niki Ceria???
I don't this I've ever seen a doc that so perfectly captures the intricacy of bouldering microbeta the way this does.
Forsure the most visually badass v17!
I think ROTS is more badass but yeah 2nd place for me
Nothing on Honey Badger or Terranova

A big thank you to Nathan's right bicep for making this send possible. So rad, newGen is unbelievable.
Filming yourself in the car you’ve just crashed is such a werid flex
My personal favorite mellow vid to date. Congratulations Nathaniel.

The best thing about these climbs are the passion from the individual. Pure dedication and drive.

SOOOOOOOO GOOD! The story, the edit, the climbing, the character (Nathaniel) amazing film. One of my favorites, no question. Great work you guys.
This is how climbing films should be, congrats on the send! The slowmo with the beta explanation is just amazing!
I loved this film, brilliant content, narrative, photography and music on what is, quite possibly, the best, most rad looking V17 on this planet
Climbing and musical theatre. Two world colliding. The wicked fan in me already loves this boulder
