- The Lowell restaurant, Backwater Cafe has closed its doors. It's owner, Jeff Altoft, said the building will be leased out to a local Mexican restaurant.
However, former employees said they were not given notice of the closure, and one had a verbal agreement to purchase the business.
"The betrayal is unreal right now," said Jodie Kennedy, the former manager who had the verbal agreement.

How do you treat your own people like that? You don't even let your own manager know you're going to close? I'm sure most of these employees have families that count on them.
Always get an agreement in writing
This ain’t news, it’s just good old American greed.
Or most likely the story of the owner having either medical or financial issues.
I am so sorry to those employees.
Are you the owner?
It wouldn’t matter if word spread on social media first. If it did, then it’s his fault for spilling the beans to someone else before his employees. But to not have the decency to have a conversation with them afterwards is just disgusting!
Unless all contract is signed in front of attorney, I would never renovate any building that does not list you as the sole owner or partner of the business.
Should wait until all agreements to ownership with all partner's name has been signed on contract.
Verbal contract won't mean a thing unless it is a "rent to purchase" real estate document.contract .
Wonder what we are not hearing...
Sue him for all costs and losses...Plus suffering etc.
I can honestly guarantee that I will never eat there
Sorry. A lot of betrayal going around nowadays. Verbal agreements aren't what they used to be. Hold your head up high, you tried your best. That's all you can ask for. Keep your strength for your next endeavor, you'll make it work. Godspeed.
Verbal agreements ended by the time the 70s came.
Sue him.
That's not professional, Jeff should notify all employees 2 weeks ahead of time that the store is closing and pay everybody their last paycheck.
Let people know ahead of time so they can go find another job or give them a job recommendation for those he laid off.
Must be some financial heartache or emergency for him to close so abruptly and without notifying employee and customers of store shutdown.
She said the betrayal is UNREAL, not REAL...
Probably short for unrealistic, like she meant unbelievable to exist in reality.
@@thebilldozer7970 we know what unreal means.
@@thebilldozer7970 you act like you never heard unreal before lol
To not tell the employees anything is a low ball move. If he ran the business like he treated his employees I see why the business closed.
New restaurant is delicious
In the long run, everything hinges upon employee work ethic. If the new crew is strong ethically, they'll all be just be fine. Landlord and tenant.
Oh Puhleez, not in writing? Later. He can do what he wants with his business.
Courts do honor verbal agreements under certain circumstances.
@@RuleofFive Not this one.
@@stuwest5862 If they can prove they did the work and have receipts they might get some money.
Do they not have more than one restaurant in that city? Lol
You gave them a yr during a pandemic, and say cuz they were in the red whole time? Most small businesses were and still are in the red. Stop playing with ppls lives lying thru your teeth
You know nothing of the details, dumbass.
Please send this on to Jodi, eh? Nothing beats a failure but a try, so go for it. That way you will not spend the rest of your life thinking "what if". You have deep feelings about this place. If you can, do the thing. I sincerely wish you luck.
"Had a verbal agreement"
Well duh. You're putting time, money and effort into a place based on the word of a guy that would close it and not tell you.
And then re-lease it at a better price because of your work.
I feel sorry for them, but that is a basic.
Gunrapids is crazy now
LOL, Do you know where Lowell is? Hint: not in GR.
It’s not Your restaurant… move on .. open Your own restaurant and stop blaming others for your failures
They should’ve DESTROYED the Insides of the Building
