My father's name is Othman and his friends call him GTO. When I was little I didn't know where did that name came from until he came home with a framed big-ass poster of Onizuka. From that time, I only knew that GTO stands for Great Teacher Onizuka and Great Teacher Othman. Around 7 years ago, I read the whole manga and realized that my father's teaching philosophy is very much like Onizuka's (not the negative side of course). Reading the manga made me so proud of being the son of GTO, Great Teacher Othman. He's still in service and will be retiring in a few years.

I was obsessed with this anime when I was 13-15 years old. It helped me though some really touch times between being bullied at school and an abusive home environment, Onizuka gave me hope. I fantasised all the time about having a teacher like him that would make school better, sadly it never happened but it still provided enough comfort that I managed to go through to the other side.

As a 15-year-old with anxiety who is constantly concerned about what others think of her, reading GTO was the greatest decision I've ever taken for myself. It is literally instructive yet amusing. It has greatly aided me in getting on my knees and backing up anytime I feel like the universe is conspiring against me. I've experienced a lot of self-doubt and fear. I've had several breakdowns, and my trauma is still haunting me. However, GTO showed me that if I spend my life worrying about my past, I would never be happy. Every time I had a breakdown, I could hear Onizuka saying, "Goddamn bitch, we're literally atoms made of star dust, and you're worried about this shit? ? will it change if you cry? does it really matter?" and I laugh at myself for bitching about it HAHAHAHA
    I love GTO

The Anime was actually the reason why I became a teacher. Seeing how a teacher was willing to step in when he was needed to help guide students, is what inspired me. But this taught me that I can suplex the bullies and the vice principle to get my point across about it needing to stop.

i always comeback to this video every year because of how good it is and every time i watch it i fall in love with GTO more and MORE! it was thanks to this video that i watched the GTO anime and it was also this video that made me read the manga! and it is also this video that inspired me to change and be more open and not be afraid of saying my feelings and doing what i really want just like Onizuka!
when u talked about how u had to change how u act to appeal to everyone resonated with me cause i felt that way too.... in a way i wish that i had watched this video when i was a teenager and i wish that i had read or watched GTO back then too, cause now i am a adult and i missed so many fun moments and only started to act more freely after becoming an adult but perhaps if i had acted more open just like onizuka i might of been much happier than i was at that time....

I only recently got around to finishing GTO and i was blown away, as somebody who works with young people now it really spoke to me on a deep level. Often kids just get disregarded or bastardised for how they act but there's often an underlying reason why and GTO really emphasised that as one of it's core messages. Of course it's dramatised for comedic effect but the undertones of being genuine, compassionate and willing to go that extra mile can make a profound impact. I can see why a lot of people who read/watch it in their formative years are inspired to go into education to be a positive influence, it really is that powerful.

This is so close-minded that it breaks my heart, because a person which thinks like this is essentially doing what they assume to be spreading awareness about: assuming how a person thinks and acts by looking at a single trait.
In short, the post is fucking cringe. Seriously, it's the argumentative version punching yourself in the face, missing, then the fist hitting your wife, because you are a monster.

For me, naruto taught me to live my life. I couldn't speak as a child since I was always in hospital and had speech therapy lessons to improve my cognitive and motor function skills. I would always stay quiet since I couldn't form words. I couldn't take my SATS exam during primary since I was seen as too stupid to even do so. That's when I got into anime, I felt a connection with naruto since everyone looked down upon him and his loneliness. My teacher said to look for apprenticeships since university wasn't an option. I was always in the lowest sets for all subjects, called stupid by my peers. I goofed around and became the class clown. However naruto taught me to believe in myself and don't let others dictate my future. I graduated from a university which is ranked 113 in the world. I'm 23 and now live in London for my graduate job. If you're reading this my point is to always believe in yourself no matter what people say. Destiny is what you make it!

      Study study study
Spoilers for Golden Boy. I highly doubt this theory is what they intended, but every episode the narrator would say that he would possibly save the world. And the last episode is about saving an anime production...was that a meta commentary on the fact that the show itself was an anime? And by saving the anime, he saved his own world?

One point you missed the chance to talk about here is the main lesson of Onizuka: everyone deserves a second chance and your future isn’t set in stone.
For those who don’t know it, Onizuka was originally featured in another manga as a side character, a one off story guy, a low life delinquent with little to no future or expectations in life, and GTO tells the story of his second chance in life, that past is implied in many of the behaviors and attitudes he shows when in danger, the disregard for his own life of his old delinquent self is still there and he puts his life in the line over and over again.
I watched this series back in 2006 when, funny enough, I had just started my career as a teacher and it helped me realize how clueless teenagers are and to remember how my life was back then. Overall, I think it helped me to become the teacher my students needed at the time, and to earn their respect not by my tittle but by becoming a reliable partner and guide on their journey. I think every teacher should watch this series.

Awesome perspective! Thanks for sharing. I never really got into Shonan Junai Gumi, so I didn’t get a chance to see it in that light. I really just put the focus on what it meant for me at the time when I was just a young teenager. So this only helps to give it more meaning for me. Thanks!

I think people also need to realize what a second chance really means and to understand people will fuck up royally serval time before actually learning their lesson witch could take awhile. Second chances are not making a mistake once and fixing it its truly understanding the mistake and changing yourself.

Believe it!

I've finally gotten around to watching this video. After I had heard so much about GTO, when I discovered this video a long while ago, I decided it's finally time to read the manga and get back to this video once I'm done. (Which I'm not, but I'm about 150 chapters in, which is good enough for me.)
Hearing you talk about it, I feel like I should have discovered GTO during a more formative age. I sure could have used that lesson of "be yourself and screw everybody who doesn't like it" when I was a kid. (Although I hopefully wouldn't have turned out like Onizuka...)
