British & Japanese Couple React to Japan’s Biggest Pop Up Street Food Night Market

- We roamed downtown Fukuoka City for 1 day to find the best nightlife and cheap and tasty local food in the home of Japan’s biggest pop up street food night market. Here’s how we really spent our Christmas and said our goodbyes to 2022 in Japan’s photogenic foodie heaven, Fukuoka!

▶︎ Looking for recommendations for what to do in Fukuoka? Fukuoka is one of Japan’s most popular cities and has become increasingly famous globally for its drinking and street food scene. Its population is growing at a faster rate than any other city in Japan, and with 4.2 restaurants for every 1000 people - second only to Tokyo for the highest concentration of restaurants in Japan - we can see why! But with so much to see and do in downtown Fukuoka City alone, it’s hard to know where the best places to eat are or how to make the most of just one day in Fukuoka.
▶︎ What is Fukuoka famous for?
Fukuoka is famous as being the home of Hakata ramen and in particular, “Ichiran Ramen”, Japan’s most popular “tonkotsu” pork bone broth ramen shop among foreign tourists, but with Ichiran branches dotted around worldwide, we’re looking for local restaurant alternatives to share with you! As well as being a foodie hub for “motsunabe” winter hotpots and “mentaiko” cod roe, apparently, there are also over 600 restaurants specialising in yakitori alone, but anyone wanting to experience Fukuoka’s best food and nightlife should check out Japan’s most famous pop up outdoor “izakaya” (Japanese pubs/ snack bars) on wheels known as “Yatai”. Today in our 1 day tour of Fukuoka, we’re visiting the Fukuoka Christmas Market, which is one of Japan’s biggest Christmas markets, to see the winter illuminations, and going in search of the best food in the city while sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with total strangers in Yatai Tenjin no Ryutakun (天神のりゅう太くん, tenjinsite.jp/manga/en/).

実はキャナルシティに近い中洲の屋台はメニューに料金が無かったり
酷い店だと博多弁以外の旅行客から高めに取ったりします…
とにかく若いお二人が羨ましい❗
博多勤務の時は毎週末…最後は博多の屋台で〆てたな…

I saw it for the first time. Seeing them happy made me feel happy too. Soaking in a hot spring can really heal your body and mind. At a ryokan, the food is delicious and you can relax. I hope you will continue to enjoy your travels while experiencing the wonderful nature of Japan.

中洲じゃなくて天神の屋台。ベストチョイスです。佐賀の呼子で活きイカをお薦めしますが、最近は福岡市内でも同じレベルでイカを出す店が増えました。
私は九州には行った事も無く、本場の豚骨🍜も食べた事も無いが、冬の屋台の🍢や🍜は美味しく、寒くてホットな最高のクリスマスに成りましたね🎄🍢🍜🎉🤤👏💕
夏の北海道にお越し頂きましたが、寒くて雪害が起こるホワイトクリスマスの北海道の暖かい🏬♨️で暖まり旨い飯🥩🥓🍗🍲🍛🍢🍜と🍻🥂🥃🍾🤤で冬の北海道を堪能して欲しいです🌨️🌫️☃️👩❤️👨🙏💕

博多20年住んでました。ごはんが全般的に凄く美味しい都市です。海あって山有って程よく都会、程よく田舎、ものすごく住みやすい街でした。（空港が中心地からめっちゃ近いしｗ）

福岡はラーメンはもちろん有名なのですが、実はうどん（中国大陸からお坊さんが福岡に持ち帰った）や、焼き鳥が有名だったりお酒は焼酎文化だったりもします。

And a very happy new year to you too! 😊🥳 we’re both a bit cynical about resolutions, but I think we’re both going to put more effort into looking after our physical and mental health this year - eating enough vitamins and all that (while also occasionally stuffing our faces with the recommended local food of course 😅😆). I hope this year is a goodun for making and sticking to yours (if you’ve made one!) too 😊
and i thought things at the Bath Christmas market was expensive. ¥1,000/£6.30 for a mulled wine?! They must be making quite the profit lol
I never did quite fill the mulled wine hole 🥲 but I wasn’t about to sell a kidney for it either 😂

僕は「牧のうどん」が今のところ１番好きですが、

Have you ever talked about moving to the UK? After your visits home don’t you ever think about it?
We have, but not long term. We’d like to try it at least once, but visa requirements in both countries complicates things 🥲
That looked so good. My question. Would it be seen to be rude to only order 1 or 2 items and move onto next yatai and do a Yatai tour.
We initially considered it! I think you could definitely go for a drink and a few bites like you might at a pub and then move on, especially if the place is crowded. What’s good is there’s no cover charge (in most yatai) too! It just so happened that the one we found was better than expected and it was freezing out so we had no reason to move on 😅

福岡に１０年以上住んでいましたが、屋台は生ものが出せないのでほとんど行ったこと有りません。

天神の屋台に行ったのは正解でしたね、中洲の屋台は雰囲気はいいですが観光地になっていて地元民は行きません、天神界隈のほうが個性があってフランス人がやってる「レミさんち」なんかリーズナブルで本格的なフランス料理が食せますよ。
