- Happy Sunday, everyone! How are you all?
A bit more basic for this week. We discuss what the roles are of a camera assistant and responsibilities involved. I have probably (most likely) missed some because the job can be so varied, so feel free to comment below with any you think should be added.
Hope you got something from this video and if you have any ideas of things that you want to see in a video, leave a comment below and let me know!

You should do a video about cable management, changing lenses and all the small stuff you should know on set (cards marking ecc)
Will do!
yes please
Thank you for all the great content! I've been trying jump on a camera department and these videos have helped me understand everyone's rolls.
You're welcome! Very happy you're finding these helpful. :)
thank you for these videos! I've learned so much from you that isn't taught in my film course
You're very welcome, TechDevoted! Thanks for watching :)
Great video! I think a video about how to wrap cables would be great! You'd be surprised how many people I see on set doing it wrong all the time.

Top video and tips! Would be great to see some examples cut in when explaining things. Keep up the videos!
Ah yeah probably should have! Thanks for the feedback and thank you for watching :)
Definitely need a video for how to wrangle wires
No worries! I'd say this one will come in a few weeks time. Going to also try do a video on gear checks so will be able to knock out cable wrapping when filming that :)
Cool stuff! Thanks!
Thanks, mate!
Thanks 🙂
Hi Felicia,
For building the camera, and checking the gear, how does one know what gear is needed for the day ? Will it be detailed in the Shot List document ?
Thanks, Daniella
Hey!
Hmm that's a bit of a hard one to answer because it really does depend on the job and it comes down to learning exactly what type of gear is required over time.
The DP is usually the one who works out what is required but an assistant will often add things to make their job easier too.
So the DP will work out the main camera kit during pre production, their selection comes down to stylistic choices, practicality and just generally understanding what is going to be suitable to the job. They don't really write it on the shot list however the shot list will help in deciding if you need certain pieces of kit like certain lenses or a dolly or steadicam etc.
When it comes to the gear check the camera assistant may need some extra accessories to make their job easier and that's where they will consult with the production team and the rental house to get those items added.
@@flickcine got it, thanks Felicia! :)
When placing marks, should you use paper tape or cloth tape? I seem to see both referenced, but nobody talks about both at the same time!
Depends on the situation. You should always check with the location manager or an AD to see if it's ok to tape the floor. Gaffer tape can damage floors but cloth tape is usually fine. Paper tape is usually fine too. Just remember to leave a little tab so you can remove it again at the end of the scene.
You can also make up your own markers. I've used metal T brackets from the hardware store wrapped in fluro cloth tape and for outdoors a discrete mark would be using a brightly coloured golf tee.
@@flickcine thanks. I have another question now tho. Is there a difference between gaff tape and cloth tape? The terms seem to be used somewhat interchangeably...
@@flickcine speaking of which, have you done an episode on tape? Specifically kinds of tape, using tape (like the tab), where to find tape, making/buying a tape holder, etc
@@jamesburton1050 ooooo I haven't done an episode on Tape actually. Good idea. There is a difference in the adhesive. Adhesive on gaff is strong but doesn't leave residue(well, good quality gaff that is). Cloth tape is a little weaker in adhesive but can leave residue if left in the heat.
any tips to internship
To get an internship or as an intern?
To get an internship I would say check in with your local union or camera professionals society. Over here we have the Australian Cinematographers Society and they often run nights where you can network with other professionals and they also provide advice and support for people trying to get into the industry with training courses etc. Otherwise, check in with a local film authority. My local one is Film Victoria and they have a signup page for people looking for attachment roles. These are the best kind of places to go because your attachment role will be regulated rather than potentially getting into a dodgy situation.
As for tips while being an intern, I would say the biggest tip I could give you would be to always be listening, always pay attention.
Hope this helps!
@@flickcine thanx for your useful reply
