How to create Canva frame mockups using Canva and Microsoft Word

- Creating Canva mockups with frames! I had a special request for this video - a subscriber asked me to show them how to create a frame for an envelope liner so she could create envelope liner mockups in Canva.
While you can do this process much faster in Adobe Illustrator, I wanted to show you how to do it using software you likely already have, especially if you don't have Illustrator. In this video I teach you you step-by-step through the process of creating a custom frame in Canva for use within a photograph.
You can follow and adapt this technique for a few different mockup scenarios:

Thank you SO MUCH for being one of the few tutorials on creating custom frames that ISN'T about converting an existing shape/vector graphic into a frame (like a paw print or whatever). Canva has hundreds, if not thousands, of photos that are called "mockups" in their library of photos, but they do not have frames in them. No frame or grid will fit the items in those photos unless they are very, very precise flatlays. And of course, the new Mockup app won't work with those photos, either. Same with "mockup" graphics.
This tutorial enabled me to take some of those photos and create a custom frame for them so that I can drop in my image to make a realistic book cover mockup (as an example)! THANK YOU for explaining it so clearly, even the potential points of "mess up." It sucks that we have to do so much back-and-forth and use multiple pieces of software (I wish I knew how to convert a transparent PNG into an SVG using the tools I have, but I don't), but this method WORKS!

Brilliant! I have looked at about 10 or more ways to do this and this is ONLY one to work, where you want a shape frame without a white/coloured border around it the frame. I do use Affinity Designer, so I can create the image in that and go straight from the pdf stage to word and then to canva, but just this process makes it so much easier. You do still need to the Word>PDF step (this is really the game changer), straight PDF to Canva won't cut it. But being about to create multiple shapes in one design space, export them individually to PDFS with layers... and then do the Word>PDF>Canva is what gets me over the line and using amazing frames.

Hey Michelle.... I am struggling to figure out how to take a photo and make certain objects within the photo Canva Frames. Specifically, right now, I am wanting to create some phone case mockups.... and I'm working with photos of people holding phones.... and trying to take that phone and make it so that when you upload it into Canva, the back of the phone shows up as a frame so that the user can place their design right into it. Do you know how to do this?
Hey there! Thanks for asking. What you're working to achieve is possible, but probably not within Canva itself. I'd start by searching for tutorials for how to make mock-ups in Photoshop, then using those skills to create Canva compatible ones. Unfortunately I don't have any tutorials for that, but a quick search in RUclips should come up with some good tutorials. Good luck!
didn't work for me. followed steps exactly, when get the pdf into word i never see my image as a "shape" like what shows in your example so there is no way to "fill" my image. i spent 4 hours trying to make it work, i guess i am missing something. thank you for the detailed video, i just messed up somewhere i guess
Thanks so much for your comment, I can honestly say it has given me grief on occasion, so you're not the only one. If you ever get Adobe Illustrator, there is a much more straightforward method that works every time.
I like the way you explain things, not too fast for people like me who are not a graphic designer. So thank you!!! But I wonder if there is a way you can permanently attach that new frame to the initial envelope? Sure you can group them. But then all I have to do is ungroup them and they’ll become two separate images/layers again.

Yes, you would be able to permanently attach the frame to the envelope. Whether you can do it using this method, I'm not sure. I'd have to test it out and get back to you. I might even do a video on it because I've been asked a couple of times. I'll pop back with a message when I create the video.
Thank you Michelle! I have the pro version of Canva and am able to download images as an SVG. However, I don't have Adobe Illustrator so I don't know if I can open it. Will I still have to go through the convert a file?
Hiya Donna! I would perhaps just try it and see.
Personally, I was never able to do that. For some reason any SVG that I downloaded from Canva I wasn't able to upload again. It may just be a glitch on mine, or something I'm doing wrong, so I'd just try it.

You don't need illustrator.
You can open your svg in free photopea and attach any photo as clipping mask.
Save as pdf and reupload to canva. It will be under projects.
Delete image and you're left with the frame.
Search RUclips for custom canva frame with photopea for step by step tutorials.

Hi Michelle. Could you do one where the same mockup can change color? I'd reckon that if I set it to a vector I'll be able to change color. Let me know if that's what I should be doing?
Hiya ☺️ you're correct, once it's a vector then you'll be able to change colour. A Canva frame is an SVG which is a vector. So you can actually change your frame colour just like you would with other Canva elements. Give it a try and let me know how you go ☺️

There's a lot of layers.. i never thought about that.. I usually do my mockups in photoshop, but I never tried in Canva itself by putting a lot of shapes... but hey thanks for this.. i just got an idea.. ❤❤❤
Yes, it's certainly easier with Photoshop but people who don't have access need a workaround hey 🤣 Glad it sparked an idea!
This is great. Thanks so much. How can we apply this technique to create a tote bag with texture or like a snack bag/chip bag for a mock up?
You're very welcome Amy. Canva doesn't yet have the features needed to create the textures and shadows for a mockup like a tote or chip bag. Do you have Photoshop? That's likely the software you'll need if you want to delve into the really detailed mockups. It's incredible what you can do on there!
@@fernandquillYes, I do have photoshop (wondering if this could be done in Corel vector free), and I would love to know how to create a frame that looks like texturized fabric with shadows or that looks like a chip bag with folds. then bring that into Canva to place any label in it. (I realize that Canva has smart mockups, but I don't want to use that, I want to be able to create my own custom frames). Would love if you could show us.
I'll be completely transparent here Amy, my knowledge of creating textured fabric with shadow mockups is not advanced enough to be able to show you at this stage. So, I won't have any tutorials for you for a while.
Im curious how the business card design would work
It would work similar to this, except you'd create a frame with the same dimensions as your business card design and add appropriate shadow. That way you can create mockups that look like a business card is sitting on a desk or something similar.
I'm getting stuck at the svg part. I tried using convertio but my svg file is blank when I upload to canva. Then I tried Canva's save as SVG and that worked, but I can't change the color of mine. Then I tried the pdf step and open in Word but it doesn't say Shape Format for me. Instead it says picture format.
Sorry you're having a little trouble with it. It's difficult for me to diagnose the problem, but one thing I will recommend is to try changing the colour of the graphic to something else before you upload to convertio. It doesn't make sense, but I have found the colour can have an effect on whether it converts or not. The shape vs picture format is associated with the SVG converting so once that's solved your graphic should show up with the shape format option.

Hi! When I click backspace or delete, it deletes the shape. It doesn’t just leave the frame. Am I missing a step?
One way for you to be able to tell us if you right click on the frame then see if it provides the menu option to "detach image". If that doesn't show up then you may have missed a step - or - you're using a Canva "shape" instead of a vector. That may be confusing as shapes are vectors. This process won't work if you're using Canva or Word shapes as your frame base. If that's how you're doing it then export the shape as a PNG or JPG, convert to an SVG and then pick up from the next point in the tutorial.
Gosh that sounds complicated, hopefully it makes sense!
Will you be able to tell us which file format you downloaded the custom frame in so it will be a shareable design in order to sell custom mockups? I would like to be able to sell ornament mockups.
Sure! My preferred way is to set the mock-up up within a design in Canva and then share the template link to your customer. If you sell them on a platform like Etsy that requires an uploaded file I will create a PDF containing a clickable button link to the template and upload that to the sale platform. That way the customer buys the product, they receive a PDF with instructions and the link. When they click the link the templates are added to their Canva account 😊

You may be able to share it as a PDF that your customer uploads into Canva, but I've never done it that way as I feel there is room for error. If you share it as a design in Canva you're sharing the Canva link that is Canva's own file format. So, if you're following the process I share in this video, then the design you create in Canva will be the one you share with your customers. Does that make sense? Not sure if I'm explaining it clearly.@@carlawallace-op7xe
I have followed along, but after converting to a svg when uploaded back to canva, there is no image. What am I doing wrong?
One thing we need to ensure is that the SVG is less than 200px on its longest dimension. Otherwise it won't upload to Canva. Can you double check that first?
You need to save your svg as a pdf before uploading to canva.
Then it will appear under projects and not under uploads.
