To be fair though, nothing about this was pretending to be 'ancient' (except that some of the forging techniques are unchanged for centuries) - there were also belt grinders, electric pumps driving the air and water for the forges, electric lighting in the work area, modern safety gear, etc.

I haven't had much reason to live lately, but I've been watching all your videos since I found this channel a couple weeks ago. The combination of such a lovely calming voice and the most thoughtful, intelligent, and serene mind make this my favorite channel I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. The appreciation for the smaller or random things in life seriously gives me hope which I know just sounds weird and pathetic. Sorry for oversharing. Thank you atomic shrimp. There is just something about Atomics videos that I love. He has a really good voice, great humor and keeps my attention. I mean, I watched an 19 minute video of him walking around Tesco earlier.
I had my own smithy about 30 years ago. Used to make armor, swords, axes, and cooking utensils. Still have all the equipment & hope to re-assemble the shop in the next few years. Pounding the metal can really remove your aggressions and mellow you out, besides making something of beauty and use.
I've honestly never seen a channel as wholesome as yours (and yes, that includes your scambaiting videos). I hope I'll learn to shed my cynical attitude for a more positive one like yours. Cheers!
I love this video! It's been a stressful day, and just watching someone have a nice time making stuff, showing it off and enjoying a beer has really lifted my spirits. Thanks Shrimps!
Thanks for the video. At one time in the past all manufacturing facilities had a blacksmith , I worked at Delta Rods for a while and they had a blacksmith he could make anything out of metal wonderful to watch him work. I like you letter opener and bottle opener they are unique , made by your own hands. I've always admired blacksmiths & glass blowers , a glass blowing day would also be fun i feel.
That was an awesome gift voucher. My kids got me an evening of ghost hunting, which I hated every minute of but the kids thought it was hilarious. Ended up at the hotel with my very own bottle of ‘spirits’ 👍🏻
My older sister is a blacksmith tutor at the Holme lacy campus near Hereford and got her first blacksmithing job at Oldfield! Your channel really does offer a fantastically broad mixture of different things. PS. the Hereford and Ludlow college offers some great short courses in blacksmithing and artist blacksmithing and is only a few miles south east of Hereford it may be out of your budget is for sure worth a visit on their open days.
I did blacksmithing back in the 70's at school, it certainly teaches you where your lesser used muscles are! I'm gratified to see there are a number of RUclips channels with young'uns doing Blacksmithing, keeping the art alive.
Oddly enough, when you made that video about your hands it did cross my mind that they looked like they belonged to a blacksmith. They have finally found their true calling.
I've been there! It was my first time doing proper forging and made a Viking knife like yours and have been doing lots of blacksmithing since. I'm about to start uploading videos about it too!! :)
Is there nothing this legend of a man will not cover? I love it Shrimp keep up the quality work. Multi talented isn't the word, before we know it you will be making the cans and sticking the weird stuff in them lol
Wow, what a great present from the kids👍👍 The handle looks exquisite, the grinding looks about my level, but I bet you can hone it at home quite nicely, judging from previous videos ( maybe try case hardening the blade too, to get a better edge - easily done with an old tin, some leather etc, and the embers of a fire...)
Damn that is impressive! Always wanted to do some blacksmithing and sword forging, but it seems super expensive to get started. Seems every blacksmith worth their weight uses industrial grade power hammers, lathes, and like twenty other different tools. Super impressed how you did all of that with nothing but a hammer and some good ol' physical labor!
My partner bought me a blacksmithing day course as a birthday gift last year, at Alex Pole Ironwork in Somerset. It was such an amazing day and I loved every minute. Didn't love the sore hands afterwards so much though haha.
Awsome, as a fairly new Smith myself I am attest to the claw like hands. You'll build strength and relax your grip in time 😊 do persue it, it's one of my fav hobbies. As a diyer look into the mini can stoves you can make, they do work on small stuff. For a first piece that really isn't bad. I've still got my first bottle opener, it's terrible lol Also if the Dan is Daniel Moss of trust me I'm a blacksmith massive woot! He's an awesome straight talking Smith. Would love to see a colab!
Buster ancient farm up the road from you do Iron Age blacksmithing days ( or at least they did when I went ) there you even build the forge out of clay & sheep poo 👍 Great fun
Okay, that is sweet! What I studied, in college, was metal-working. Well, my emphasis was on jewelry and metals., in fine arts. So it takes me back. I am surprised you haven't done this, before. It seems right up your alley. Very cool and nice job!
Hello Atomic Shrimp, I myself am a blacksmith and would like to encourage you to keep going. When you start blacksmithing more, you will probably use coal, gas, or charcoal. If you start with wood, you’ll have to work a lot but it’ll be very rewarding.
I was working at a blacksmith for a week and i was making an exact same knife/dagger as you. Unfortunately my teacher/mastersmith messed up the routine and turned the blade to (as fragile as) glass on accident. So sad to have lost it cus it looks so nice!
Yeah, it surprised me too, but they handled the training really well - those of us who chose this item watched one of the professionals do the first part of the process, then we went back to our anvils and did it, then grouped together to see the next process, etc. Really good stuff
Good to see they're still teaching the medieval art of the angle grinder.

Ahhhhh... good old Mr. Shrimp. All is right with the world again 😊
Brilliant, I wouldnt mind trying that out especially if you get to reward yourself after with a bottle of something cold too!
They say once you go black smithing, you're hooked for life.
once you go black, you never go back
My future BiL is a blacksmith by trade... well, blacksmith/"freak show" performer. He makes swords, then either sells them or swallows them.
not so easy to do both with the same sword I suppose.
so he can no longer sell them after swallowing?
Good job at making this both peaceful and interesting. Cheers!
You did a great job on it! I have never done blacksmithing, but I have always wanted to.
I'm in Oxford so I might try this out. Thanks!
should have blacksmith yourself a tab puller. oh well, there's always next time.
Then you don't know why he doesn't use the pull-tab on food cans.

That must have been a very cool experience! Oh if we only had blacksmiths in Brazil...
Try making a billet out of spring steel from a chunk of leaf spring. That's a work out. If you do it at a wrong temp it will crumple apart.
Yeah, I think that's why they started us on mild steel - if you burn it, you lose part of the metal, but you can sort of squish it back together
Brillant skills and a pint to go with it
