  • "I remember at the time, the big question was, who's better, Floyd or Shane? A lot of people said Shane because they were trying to impose their subjective preferences in terms of style of fight on the objective reality of who's better...put your money on the blue chip guy," stated HBO commentator Max Kellerman, who got deep on the preferences versus the reality of fans and media in the sport of boxing. Check it out!

    Max is brilliant. The subjective preference versus objective reality argument applies to many things outside the boxing/sports landscape as well. It happens all the time.

    Yeah. They should give penalties for excessive clinching and they should impose it in every fight, without bias. It's a sport I get it but I didn't pay for excessive hugging and pitpat punches. Yeah good idea.. Change the rules so that no one in the sport of boxing gets a paycheck without putting in work. Work as in 'fighting'.

    I like the fact that Max gave these non-network interviewers his time, and I think he makes a number of good points. I do think there are a couple basic questions/points that he unconsciously skates over -- e.g. what exactly does/should define who the "better" boxer is; and this relates directly to his use of the concepts of "objective" and "subjective". Based upon what criteria? Clearly it is more (or should be more) than simply one's win/loss record. Obviously one must consider the level of competition, and (IMHO) the manner in which the fighter won. Floyd was superlatively talented, without question. But his legacy is mainly that of "The Great Outpointer". Yes, he won. Sometimes in superb fashion (cf. against Diego Corrales), but more often in a risk-adverse, safety-first manner. Fighters like Mosley, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, and even Leonard were something else altogether. I'm just saying that the situation is more complicated than Kellerman realizes and represents here.

    Football (Soccer) DOES change it's rules all the time and to say American Football is more entertaining is bullshit. You have to grow up with American Football to like it (lie I did). The only people who like American Football are Americans, yet MOST countries like Football (Soccer), I think that tells you something.

  • @richardkoenigsberg4271
    @richardkoenigsberg4271 7 лет назад

    But finally, it's about entertainment. People pay for sports to be ENTERTAINED. Boxing has no PURPOSE: no contribution to civilization. Simply to provide excitement and entertainment. He's right about "the rules," but still...winning has to do with

    Hardly anyone wants to pay and see jabs, clinch, and running around. The Rigo fight on the undercard of Cotto-Alvarez is one great example, he connected 28? for 10 rds and won on UD. Effective boxing? At some point you have to mix in some sort of fighting in there. Max comparing boxing to football, bleh! In football you don't need judges to win. Try dancing.. do you think a boring routine wins?
