Without manufacturing India cannot grow at faster pace and pullout millions out of poverty. For the semi skilled and unskilled, manpower intensive manufacturing is essential. Ship building, auto ancillary, electronics, steel equipment, garment, food processing, agro tech have to be all pushed at massive scales.

Cultural revolution of China was nothing more than a Chinese version of Japan's Meiji restoration, meiji too broke certain structures of old society which was resistant to modern industrial structure which is something China did as well. Indian govt historically was weak and did not destroy the conception of family cliques and neoptism although it did it better than Pakistan but still did not go far enough. All cultural products are created in cities, civilization itself requires conception of cities. Village is meant to be primitive which should be limited to agriculture activities. To expand up to 10 trillion industrialization will be required. Otherwise India might get stuck in 5-8 trillion.

Honestly I am a little disappointed by the podcast. While I agree with his overall message of India requiring a cultural revolution, infrastructure creation, reducing petty crimes and the need for public order to be restored, many other arguments are either fallacious, incorrect or not apt for India.
    1. India cannot follow the east Asian countries' playbook on manufacturing. America was still growing as an economy when east Asian countries ramped up manufacturing prowess. As of today, growth is stagnant in the broader West. India can hope to take a pie from the east Asian countries but cannot replicate their strategy. It needs to manufacture for its own population to begin with instead of copy-pasting mercantilist manufacturing models.
    2. American cities are horribly planned (and Japanese cities are not all grid layout type except for small portions). There are limited walking areas and the requirement of a car is a must to commute between different parts of a city except for NY, Boston. Moreover, America can afford this expansive car-centric city planning because of the huge land mass, we need to create cities that encourage public transport, cycling and walking leaving the car capacity to a few vehicles or LCVs. This is not a scarcity mindset but a policy implication for India.
    3. America is the only country in the world that has an abundance mindset because that was the basis of its creation and the American Dream. Enormous land and natural resources have enabled this mindset. Bharat has always been one of the most densely populated regions in the world since time immemorial. Conservation of resources has been deeply ingrained into our culture and psyche. There is nothing wrong with having such an approach.
Finally, I feel his long time in the US clouds his judgement and makes him observe things from an Americentric perspective. Bharat will have its own model of development. The government should create infra on mission mode and devolve more powers (and create accountability) for cities to make them liveable. The rest Bharatiyas will take care of.

Good discussion. The need for 10x thinking is a good suggestion and worth noting 👍
However, I disagree with Shashank's hypothesis that progress in India can be bottom-up. Historically, India has been top-down in terms of progress and bottom-up in terms of resistance -
    Examples of top-down progress -
    1. Economic Liberalization in 1991
    2. India becoming a nuclear power in 1998
    3. Ram Mandir Movement planned by the BJP, culminating in creation of Ram Mandir in 2023
    Examples of bottom-up resistance -
    1. Rebellion of 1857
    2. J.P. Narayan movement of 1975 against Indira Gandhi's Emergency
    3. Anti Farm Laws Movement from 2020 - 2021
Also, Shashank's statement that hardware / manufactured product startups require less funds than software startups is incorrect. Software startups (unlike in 2021) normally raise big money after some product traction. And getting to that part (product traction) in a hardware product requires a significant investment. If a young person wants to get funded via a loan from an Indian Bank for a hardware / manufactured product startup, that is just not going to happen!

We Indians always find a problem to follow the rules. Our mindset is the person next to me is not following why i should follow. No sense of responsibility to be clean as well . We follow corruption to the core . Our big cities are run by corporations who are working life mafias . Our city roads are not world class at all. Lack of planning , lack of quality and no standardization . Forget about the village roads . We spit on the roads and everynow and then dig up the existing roads because our different departments are not coordinated . Long way to go folks.

Overall good discussion, but some comments were naive. Core issues were not properly understood.
    1) china is 5 times bigger than us GDP wise so most indicators will be 5-8 times bigger, thats not a surprise
    2) things like why we cant build HSR over eway etc is pointless as its mostly function of money. When we have enough money things will happen
    3) metro all over world are like that. Stations cant be skipped as there are only 2 tracks unlike normal railway where it exapnds to 10s of tracks near stations.
    4) petty crimes cannot be easily stopped at this level as we have lot of poor people. Cant vacate encroachment or slums as its not fair to poor people. Thailand is 7k per capita which is 2-3 times bigger than India.
    5) there are many companies that make fans in India. What is different abt atomberg is that they introduced BLDC fans which was innovation
    6) there are many more vehicle manf companies like TVS, eicher, Ashok Leyland, force, hero etc so that will also grow naturally, no real information or insight there even when you talked about it for 10min
In nutshell many of these will be solved when we reach similar income levels.
Real problem we have is lack of planning and quality control over execution, horrible police and slow judiciary, very poor urban infra.
these things are bad even when compared to similar GDP per capita levels countries. Many of these are related to excess democracy which cant be corrected now.

Haan, aur bhi better ways ho sakte hain, I respect them, par ye Dixit sahab jo bol rhe hain, wo AC ki hawa me baith ke sunne ke liye achha hai, yha zamin pe aake execute karne ke liye this Indian society is too rigid. This is one of best example of how homegenous culture like in UK USA Industralist spend some money on creating institution to prepare future work force of technitian but parsi ignored in India. Nothing against Parsi but this is fact.
Bullet train is not a solution for big country like India. Maintaining track and track barrification is costly for bullet train. Bullet train is OK for country size like Japan, Germany to connect few high traffic centre. Same money can be spend for high acceleration train with overall Average speed of 125km/h compare to 200km/h average speed of bullet train and cost increase by 4 times..

This is mindset of scarcity .
      Abundance mindset is :
Not building something is not the solution, it's always good to have as many transport alternatives as possible.
You can't cry about something which you don't even have , those who value their time will pay for quick, noiseless, hassle-free transport.
2nd important point is we can't increase speed on current railway tracks beyond 150-160 km/hr as train operating above this speed require proper barricaded tracks, with low curves
Semi-highspeed and high-speed trains can run only on new separate lines that is why we have to build RRTS and Bullet trains 😊

56:47 well I can understand what you are saying , but you see in USA how the social security is fixed from a very long time , so when a person in USA work on a risky big project ( it can be university) his mind has no worries of his basic survival or any kinda worry of his family survival ,
Also minimum wage and equality in the society is there , so a risk taker have a peace of mind that if his project fails , he can grab an odd job which is capable of giving him a basic civilised life (and society doesn’t look down to any job) so there is not that kinda society pressure which one can face in India 😊😊,
I mean I hate when they start calling people freebie , how cruel it is , the people are innocent and they are already suffering from great discriminations and poverty, and if you giving them lil help of free electricity, people start calling it freebie, lol 😂
They have no clue how human being works.
You give respect and dignity to a human being , you ll then see a great difference in them .
    Which west understands.

Bhai kis gadhe ko laaye ho. Apartment ki price kam hone se nahi hua evergrande barbaad. Ek project ka paisa doosri jagah lagane se hua. India mein bhi builders yahi karte the, RERA ne rok diya. (IBFC and RERA are 2 of thr most important protections given to indian consumers)
US mein bhi aise laws hain builders ke liye.
I agree vocational education (higher education in general) ki shortage hai India mein, badi companies bhi kam hain. Aur hume apna haal South Korea jaisa nahi karna jahaan kisi ko job nahi milti. Lekin uska solution Chinese aur Japanese way nahi hai (all these 'tiger' economies with the exception of Singapore are full of Zombie corporations with a negligible start up culture).
India, like the US ,needs to chart its own course.

China can’t even make the SS ball that is used in ball point pen, they have to get it from Japan. In last 10 years China became pioneer in stealing the technology 😄.

Jyadatar wo Galat hi kehte hai. Raghuram Rajan jo pichli Congress aur UPA ki sarkar ka ravaiya tha usko jayaz thehrane ki koshish kar rahe hai. Pichle sarkar ye nhi chahti thi bharat manufacturing ko jyada tawajjo de. Yaad hai , pehle hindu devi devtaon ke murtiyan China se aati thi, jabki China me to koi hindu dharm ko mante nhi. Lekin Chinese unko manufacture karke bharat me export kar dete the. Wo murtiyan to bharat me banne chahiye the(Murti Pooja karne ka ek fayeda ye bhi hai ki economy ko support karta hai , murtikaron ki murtiyon ki demand bani rahti hai aur employment generate hoti hai, ye prachin hinduon ko pata chali thi, ye Tantra darshan se nikla hai) Lekin pichli sarkaron ko isse koi problem nhi thi. Humare yahan kanoon aise bane hai ki aap saste me koi cheej bana hi nhi sakte ,lekin China ye kar sakta tha, bharat me 80% se jyada log Gareeb pichde hone ke bawajood aap saste me koi cheez banake Market me bech nhi sakte the. Ab chunki modi manufacturing par jor de rahe hai jo ki pichle sarkar ne nhi kiya to unhen darr hai ki Modi ko postmodern Indian economy ke nirmata ka khitab na mil jaye.

The quality of infrastructure currently constructed is poor, and most of the money is siphoned off by politicians, and bureaucrats in the form of commissions, and consultancy fees. Construction contracts are offered to contractors close to political parties and subcontracted to the families of bureaucrats. I can only hope that Modi is made aware of the same or else the damage to his reputation will be irreversible.

Sir I have friends and colleagues from ASEAN countries, amongst them Korean people are the most hard working people. But overall people from East Asia are very hardworking and for them their work is their pride. They will die for their work. India needs to learn from these countries. Don’t follow them but copy their good habits.

Japanese work to death. Even in India, companies exploit people and overwork them. It's not an attitude problem but a skill issue. We don't have a lot of skilled people in India. Everyone tries to make big bucks in an industry which they are not even interested in.

About education sector analysis , however , you are spot right but now the things are changing. Present government has started 150 new medical colleges ( govt. Funded ) so that they will be sufficient doctors in future . And in west health sector is not easily affordable to poor.

That isn't a problem, it's a tradeoff. They "earn" through basic services like healthcare, food, water and "invest the profit" into R&D, HDI and operational excellence. For all the talk of cost, the US has the best hospitals, best Pharma cos, best doctors and best medico-industrial base.
I am not saying that it is the only path, the US needs a limited phase of cheap Medicare, with limited being the operative word.

What is different now from 50 years ago is that the application of automation in factories is getting higher and higher, a large number of jobs that used to require a lot of people are replaced by robots or automated equipment, fewer people are needed, cheap labor has less impact on the cost of production, and the technical requirements for factory operators are much higher than before. It often takes several years of vocational and technical training to become competent, and the capital, technical threshold and commercial risk of investing in factories are much higher than before. Until now, China is still in short of skilled workers who can be skilled in CNC equipment. Fortunately for China, 50 years ago, a large number of rural labor can be easily trained to work in factories, and factories at that time need far more cheap labor than now, and the large population at that time just meet the needs of industrialization. Unfortunately, India does not have such good luck now.

I think your analysis is completely wrong , India is 432 years ahead of Singapore/China/Japan/USA, we have smart cities not only on India but Modi ji built multiple smart cities on planet Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. also we have bullet trains running from India to Mars and Mercury, also Indians have 10000000 crore in their account so they are the richest in the world, India is also the cleanest country on planet earth that there is no garbage on the garbage collection center itself. India not only has make in India program but it also has make in mars and Pluto program where India built smart cities and smart colonies.India is so smart that USA,China and other 3rd world European countries learn from India on how to manage garbage collection center and how to run their own country.

There are many drawbacks in his analysis.
    1. Germany is a huge manufacturing hub.
    2. Which is the most productive locality in the US?
It is San Francisco bay area. That is definitely not a high-traffic area. One can't generalise such things. There are different ways of development geographically.

It is a one sided analysis . . at many points in depth analysis was required going upto the root cause of the problems and the solution would have been practical and workable then . . It is easier to compare with other countries but we should take into consideration a couple of points like low 'density' of population in other countries as compared to India . . It should also be taken into consideration that China opened up its economy (in seventies) way before India did in 1992 . . China got guarantee of heavy investments from the USA and EU in lieu . . and thus it flourished . . Whereas India didn't get any such guarantee beforehand before opening up of our economy before our economy being opened up in 1992. Moreover the infrastructure development was very slow due to lack of funds, finance and investments (during UPA regim it was only around $ 250 billion) and abundance of 'babudoms' . . Gradually things are moving for better now as is visible from the increasing forex reserves and good investments from foreign funding agencies coupled by solid government support planing and actions . . Just have patience and wait for some time . . We are moving in the right direction now overcoming all the hurdels that are throwing spanner in our wheels of development . . It will take some time to change the mindset of the people and bringing in workaholic mindset . . Just wait and watch . . India is arriving . . Jai Hind 🇮🇳

    Hi Arihant
India’s civilisational edge and future progress would be underpinned by her strives and achievements in scientific research, innovation, R & D and academia-industry convergence. Your interaction with Sanjay Dixit has very rightly brought this to fore, he was right in considering this an imperative. Human development, prosperity and wellbeing of any society would be critically dependant on its achievements in scientific research and innovation.
For the last few years, I am working towards inspiring young minds for future engagements in science through the multilingual platform, Scientific European, which I founded few years ago. I expose them to latest research & scientific and technological developments in their mother tounges for easy comprehension and appreciation. This eases language barriers faced by non-English and non-native English speakers. The translations, when read with original article in English, make comprehension and appreciation of the idea easy.
You are very good in your work, great service to the country. Congratulations!

This is good information, but the basic premise is that you are comparing yourself to a completely different economic and demographic model.
Singapore, Korea Japan have piddling populations and so export is the only choice for them to grow. Also their growth was fuelled by the massive influx of cheap dollars (cheap for the US) where they exported natural resources, labour and depended upon the economic engine of the US. That's exactly why, after growing to the point where Japan threatened to become the world no 1 economy, overtaking the US, all the US has to do was tweak a few levers and they've not recovered from the stagflation they went into in the 1980s.
Today China is realising the same thing. They've mined their resources, polluted their air, waters with heavy chemicals and metals and all this export for paper money - it takes the US 17 cents to print 100 dollars and then give it to China for 100 dollars worth of real goods.
I feel that our growth was and will be fuelled by our domestic markets first and then exports to reach attainable and sustainable levels of prosperity.
India is looking at mass transport using waterways, rail and creating tier 3,4 cities. We have enormous potential for growth by moving production to these cities.
Please look at our purchasing power parity. We are third in the world currently.
So i feel that this interview is helpful but we must drive our own growth story, not use a "playbook" cookie cutter plan.

We will leap frog interim technologies and adopt the latest tech at scale. You can see this in our upgradation of 95% trains to electric in a decade. UPI skipped all the interim tech moving directly to mobile based payments. Stock exchanges have had T+1 day trade settlement for last 20 years where the US still has T+3 to T+5 day trade settlement.
India is building roads at a world record pace.
All this while de dollarisation is decimating the economies of Japan, South Korea, China etc.

China used highly questionable trade policies and propping up one company in a sector with other competitor companies providing resources, marketing, sales to one company till they became world leaders. Then that company helped the others grow larger. This is possible in a dictatorship, not in a democracy. But all this was propped up by printing currency, reverse engineering and copycatting foreign technology. Shortcuts which have led to a bad reputation in the world.
We can achieve similar growth without sharp tactics.
