    Another tip: If you know the material the class is going over, learn it over winter break. You have a lot of time to get ahead to make sure you are happily right on top of your work rather than behind all year. The difference between being a little bit ahead and a little bit behind is HUGE in terms of stress.

    • @cumensu
      @cumensu 8 лет назад +14

      Great tip! I've always struggled with motivation. After my first semester of graduate school this past Aug.-Dec. I did reflecting and have concluded that being ahead an assignment, or 2, or more is what might be best for me if the option is available.

    • @jacobbailey5498
      @jacobbailey5498 8 лет назад +11

      Yep and once you DO those tasks, ironically, you will need a LOT LESS motivation in the future because you won't be stressed.

    • @jacobbailey5498
      @jacobbailey5498 8 лет назад +22

      i.e., if you get ahead by a little bit you will be continuously in a non-stressed state if continued. Which means you don't need the huge motivation required to do things while in a stressed state.

      +Jacob Bailey I did this when I was taking English classes and it helped me so much! I knew all the vocabulary and I could explain my colleagues what it meant and improving my English by remembering the words

      ThisIsCat Sousa Nice. :) I find that it works as a good buffer as well. Sick days or missed classes will not affect how well you do on tests as much.

      Definitely following these tips can help. Feeling like you're prepared and ready for what comes next can calm you down a great deal. You can also reach out to someone. A friend, one of your parents or post on a school message board. Just say honestly "I'm quite nervous about starting my first semester". But it's OK and normal to be scared right now. Just know that once the first two weeks pass by and you start to settle in to the class and schedule, you'll realize that it's not that bad at all.

      Karina Daniela Barrios Morales fall 2016 was first time in college ever ! I was scared like you at first but to be honest it was not that hard. In college students are more independent so you have to make sure you have time to study and complete assignments in time. Buy a planner or download a calendar app so you can keep track of due dates. Good luck !!

    I like to go to the library and take pictures of the books. I invested on an iPad with 32 gb, so I can have a lot more memory for all the pictures I need to take.
    Plus I see which professor I can get away without need it the book. Professors will never state you don't need the book and always require the latest edition.

    One habit I have started this new semester is watching one of these videos every morning after breakfast while I finish my coffee. Really helps me feel confident going into the day.
    Also, I have a suggestion for a video if it doesn't already exist. Now that organizations are starting to meet, I'm having a tough time picking which ones to join while still leaving time for homework and other things. Between church groups, a couple research opportunities, geology club, environmental service club, and many more, I just want to do all of it. How can I choose which ones to commit to and how much can I do to still maintain balance in my schedule?

    One thing I find really cool is reading through the notes or material of something that is GOING TO BE TAUGHT soon (maybe the next day or week) beforehand really helps while the class is taken. (I'm talking about a new topic or a new lesson). Even if you don't understand shit, just skim through them, and you'll understand better when it is taught. Maybe you can even get interactive in class and answer the professor's questions. 🙂

    I had such a hard time with finding a study area. Cause if I tried to move my desk around, I'd just gravitate to my bed no matter what and flop in my studies. So I basically had to completely remove access to my bed. So now I just study at a particular table in one of my college libraries. I get sooo much work done now when I'm surrounded by books and other people studying. It really helps me.

    Thanks for this video, Thomas! You should have definitely mentioned that one of the ways to start off your new school year/semester is to watch your videos. Seriously, they are very motivational and very informative. One thing I wanted to know, is about your experience with voice recorders. I recently bought a voice recorder and a) I would like to know about YOUR experience with voice recorders and b) I would like to know how to maximize the effectiveness of a voice recorder. Right now, I am thinking of recording my teachers lectures and I am trying this new thing where when I am studying at home and writing notes, I started voice recording and I talk aloud through my thought process so when I am revising, I replay my voice recording whilst studying to maximize my focus because in my opinion AND experience, your focus is more honed when more of your senses are used. So for example I am using my hearing more and I am becoming more focused, is there perhaps a study behind this? Because some people study easier when listening to music so it will be a very interesting thing to think about.

      If you have a Mac or iPad, it might be worth checking into an app called Notability. It lets you type and write out (with a stylus) notes along with recording lectures. The coolest part about it is that your notes are directly linked to the recording so you can listen back to what the professor said 3 weeks ago during a test by just clicking through your corresponding notes.

    • @TheBluePandorica
      @TheBluePandorica 9 лет назад

      Chris Gatewood I would honestly use those handy apps except for the fact that phones/tablets aren't allowed in my school so I had to exclusively buy a voice recorder. :/

    • @TheBluePandorica
      @TheBluePandorica 9 лет назад +1

      Dude I am not even kidding, whether Thomas makes a video on this or not, it's an awesome study hack, I was studying just 10 minutes ago and I was writing notes and I was voice recording and giving a commentary over my study, as soon as I stopped recording, i wanted to go outside and started to procrastinate, in fact, this message itself is a procrastination, I haven't finished writing my notes and I decided to do this, I didn't think about doing it when I was voice recording and studying. Holy crap.. I really hope this works in the long term and is not just a two day solution.

It is quick to look at or to edit. Bonus is that the picture is easy for the students to understand and they can see when another student is free to play.

It was a way too long pause from school(5 weeks) and now I need to start building that momentum of being a motivated student and believing in the fact I can get to the upper middle class life I wish to attain some day. Well atleast I did do quite good progress on my own hobby of learning Japanese, and I also enrolled on a Japanese course my school offers, those are really rare in my little country. I wish you all a great 2019!

    It's also worth pointing out that most college libraries will hold required textbooks 'on reserve'. If you don't need to take a book home, and can do the required reading within the allotted checkout time (and you are willing to read in the library), then you might be able to get away without buying the book.

    I like the tip about writing your teacher's office hours in your (Google) calendar. I'll try this on ALL my calendar.

    These tips really do help! I followed some of them last year when I had a super tough load of classes and I got my best gpa yet! I'm definitely going to try using google calendar this year as well.

    Re: putting the schedule on your calendar, phone alarms are perfect for that. Put 10-30 minutes (depending on the size of the campus, 10 minutes is enough for community college) before the actual class time so you can go and be on time.

    I love this channel. Not only is it informative but it's also inspiring, to put effort into my habits and so on. I'm going to be starting college this year and I'm really nervous that I'll have trouble so I like watching these videos to make sure I'm as prepared as possible before I move in.

    I wish I found your channel when I was still a college student. But a lot of your content is still applicable in work life so I take advantage of that content.

    Gosh this is funny. I literally when in and put my schedule into my calendar the day before this episode released. Nice advice! I especially like the idea that we need to find a dedicated study space. So many people I know will try to study in the dorm, and they just aren't effective. Don't be that guy who keeps your roommate up because you're studying in your room at 1 in the morning.

      Rylan Edlin haha definitely! Though, unfortunately, my university's library closes at midnight. While I definitely think it's you shouldn't usually be studying at 1AM, there were times I wished I could have stayed a little longer.

    I love your videos. Seeing that you have been a science student can you make a video on how to make efficient science notes? All the other videos on youtube are for history etc and the studying method for those is not exactly the same as in science
    So I could really use your help in this! Thanks! 😄

    BIG TIP: When he talked about a study area try and find a spot where you will be facing a wall with the desk and just your work, keep your phone or devices in another room. Trust me, when you won’t have distractions you will feel so much more comfortable working!
    Thanks for reading aha 👌

    this is very informative as I'm going through a difficult time in college. Your tips are useful and motivating, although the only issue I have are some teacher that aren't approachable and are hard to tolerate. it makes my motivation drop and their subject seems more like a hassle even if I try to enjoy it..
