+mlpSpiritCross haha
+mlpSpiritCross Exactly what i'm doing right now
same omg..
+mlpSpiritCross literally me right now LOL
same
i should study but instead i've been watching videos about how to study more effectively for like the last 2 hours.
+Max Mustermann same ._./
+Max Mustermann you were procrastinating about procrastinating. Procrastination inception strikes
Yeah I'm with ya
+Max Mustermann Same here right now -_-
+Max Mustermann saame here :3
I'm watching this video because I'm procrastinating but I'm still trying to be productive. :D
Same.Honey..Same
This is my mood right now
I’m watching for my benifit
I m watching, cause studying was too boring for me
Catherine Sebring Ive always called this "Proactive Procrastination"
Summary:
1. Corson Technique
1. Pinpoint EXACTLY where the confusion is
2. Use spaced repetition software to promote Spaced Repetition
1. Wanikani
2. Anki
3. Method of Loci - memory palace technique!
1. Imagine walking through a house with information plastered all over the walls. Walk through the same route during recall.
4. Hack Akrasia - working against Procrastination
1. Get commitment devices (Beeminder)
2. Short-term rewards
5. Improve the Pomodoro Techniques
1. Experiment with the Time Intervals (e.g. 45-15)
2. Write down distractions on a piece of paper
6. When learning, use both focused and diffused thinking
1. Focused thinking only uses Prefrontal Cortex; good for problems you already know or understand
2. Hence, use diffused thinking to help with learning
7. Gauge your classes (match speed at which professor move + speed that you understand)
1. Pre-read lecture notes
2. Ask questions
8. Start problem sets ALONE
1. When your friend solves a problem that you couldn’t solve, you’ll listen to their answer and say “I kind of get it.” Not good enough.
Lol. I’m way too lazy to read all this. I’ll just listen to the 13 min video.
Tnks
you are amazing... summarized it perfectly.
The real mvp although the video wasnt that bad either :P but still you da real mvp
Thank you for saving my time 😣 done with all this youtube views and money stuff
I used the gummy bear technique. Now I have a 4.0 GPA... And Type II Diabetes.
+Andrew Curley but you smart tho, right?
Lucas Gama
I tell myself that to battle the depression from developing the diabetes.
+Andrew Curley r u serious,or joking
stanley Souverain
I would have to be pretty sick to be joking about something like that. ;)
Andrew Curley Thats what I was thinking too...but then again there are trolls out there and attention seekers...damned sorry to hear that,I knew it was a bad reward system when I saw it ,I was like nah ill get diabetes.
Is it ironic that I'm watching these videos as a form of procrastination?
I should be working on college essays but instead I'm binge watching study tip videos...
Julian Lang True story.. :( I should had done my homework even though I don't wanna wait until the last day.

Watching these videos make your brain think that its doing something productive .
HAHAHHAAHA SO true.
the problem with the award system, is that i tend to give myself the reward regardless of whether or not i completed the task...
Haha that's so me too! I remember I once rewarded myself with some sweets and ate too much, resulting in me not continuing the work. The solution? Punishing myself by eating more sweets, since eating sweet isn't good for you. Wonderful logic system I had back then lol...
That ain't a problem with the system, 'tis a problem with you honey
Best tip ever: JUST DO IT!
subscribed, starting college for the third freaking time, hope i dont let myself down
Almost the same with me, my second time in college and I'm starting off better than the first time.
Don't let the past dictate your future. I believe in you!
+fuckgoogle+ same here.. but I think it´s better to notice what you don´t like while studying than after getting a degree and being stucked in a job which you eventually would start to hate.. it may seem like a waste of time now.. but in 20 years it won´t make much difference and you will be happy with your life!
+fuckgoogle+ going to start for the second time, I'm with you man.
+fuckgoogle+ How's it going so far?
Nice! Homework and Chill. Classic.
+Luigi Rebollos almost as classic as the RUclips and Chill :P
Dynamite presentation and good detail for these advanced techniques. Regarding tip number one, asking the right question, this can also help others. As a graduate student, I stopped in the professor's office just before class and discussed my specific area of difficulty. The professor used my question to start off the class. I think he realized "if this guy doesn't get it, maybe others are confused as well."
That's an excellent point! Half of my videos are inspired by singular questions, and I know professors get their ideas in a similar way.
You are kinda lucky! When I was in university, we were not allowed to ask questions before the class but rather after, and in 50% of cases, the teacher would tell you to send an email. As I go back to uni next year, I hope the system will be different! Your teacher is just a genius!
I was che only to make questions (a lot), result? The only who knows something, and now the only who answer to the questions I maked, (professors checks if the students remember, I maked the question and I remember the answer:). Listen, think, ask, understand, remember, use it in life. This method works.
This channel is a blessing, I'm 28 and decided to go back to shool (1st year japanese), I have been working very hard from september on, but around the end on october I got sick and felt I was working a lot but not really knowing if it was efficient or working, and I have to say I felt very discouraged and found myself doing less and feeling guilty about it. But thanx to this channel, I found out what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong so I know what to keep, and it makes me hopeful and enthusiastic again. So thank you VERY VERY much!
I almost destroyed my mouse when clicking on "subscribe" to your channel. You are a fucking genius.. the best coach around .
Hey Thomas. I'm writing from South Korea as a university student, in a foreign country, having culture shocks now and then and stuff, and then again trying to do my best at school, combining all of these factors... Anyway..
I simply and sincerely want to emphasize my gratitude for your work(tips) here. I cannot really express how grateful I am right now, but let me put it this way.
Thank you, and
God bless you.
Hi Thomas, thank you so much for making these videos. I'm going into my freshman year of high school this year, and this channel is really encouraging that I won't get disorganized and sloppy by the second week in. Keep it up man, I and a lot of other people really appreciate you :-)
"Writing what disturbs you while studying" is a really good idea ! i will definitely try it.
Thank you ! you're awesome :)
Finally!! Somebody else also believe in studying alone. I find others just piggy back off each others learning in a group studying and not really learn anything.
Lester Dela Cruz true, plus whenever I tried to study with friends in college, we just ended up goofing off and messing with Duke Nukem soundboards. If you're gonna study in the group, it really helps to have people who have already put in some work beforehand.
I think this is a great example of a pure form of kindness a human can do. Thanks Thomas for your time, research, and will to help and share knowledge ;)
1. what dont u truly understand , pin point it.
2. spaces repetition software
3. method of loci.( visualisation wrt rooms of house)
4. akrasia - 1. commitment device 2. short term reward - movie/game
5. pomodoro , 45 mins 1 task only, 15 min break.
6. distraction note downs eg. urge to use phone / website
7. diffused or focused thinking - prefrontal cortex.
I genuinely find it so comforting listening to your videos. And bonus in gaining more intellect than I ever would in my school life so
Great tips! Unfortunately for me, I memorize things much faster by writing things down on paper, technology- in that sense- gets in my way a lot.
same here! I have to keep rewriting info so time consumindg.
Intresting I hear that a lot but for me this does not work at all. When I wrote it down I am like... What did I just wrote down?....
omg me too! lol
+Natalia Antunes With the amount of information we have to deal in the modern world, you just can't afford paper-based systems anymore. This is not an opinion, this is fact. The sooner you make the transition, the better.
A. G. Hendrix I just recently bought the boogie board it was $10 you write on it and it has the capacity of 50,000 pieces of paper.
I'm speechless... what an awesome video, amazing techniques. I am really sad how little I knew about learning itself when I went to college!
bgn thanks! If you're learning more now, it's all good - college is just one chapter of your life. The learning never ends :)
Thomas Frank I always wondered why is it that I can't remember this and that, for examply in Biology! It's because I wasn't using any, literally any of Your techniques. Man, I have a lot of catching up to do.
Extremely informative and helpful video! Although I recently graduated college, all these tips are still helpful for any future learning. Definitely subscribed when you used your life examples of learning Japanese. Looking forward to checking out more of your helpful tips and videos! Thanks Thomas Frank!
Hey, Thomas. Just want to say thanks for the video. I'm a professor; I use this and a few of you other videos in my college classes. I like them because, as you say, many techniques given in college texts and classes aren't that effective. You use many that I use, and then some. It's great that they are available online for ease of access and use. You can tell by the number of views and subscribers you have that these techniques exist in the, as I say, no BS zone. Well done!
Resp. Sir,
What are your suggestions for a freshman in college studying Econ(H)?
I read your bio, you spelled gaming "gameing", doubt you're a professor
I've found that quizlet has tremendously helped me with my studying.
Liam Tanglao cool! I'll check it out :)
Quizlet has helped me so much
Hey Tom, thanks for all these great tips! I'm currently trying to find a pomodoro interval that works for me... I was also interested in what you said about focused thinking vs diffused thinking, I'd love to learn more about that actually. Your videos are really a huge help to me and my life right now, so thank you :D
That was awesome Thomas, Thank you for doing this!
your videos are all motivating and I am learning a lot from them!
I'm already using Anki to learn French and Russian. Love it. And if I make one side of the "card" a picture, it almost feels like I'm playing a game not studying. But it is effective nevertheless.
The Method of Loci is incredibly tedious and time consuming, but it's brilliantly effective. I used the method when I was taking up Plant Taxonomy and we had to be able to identify 500 - 700 species of plants in the field (plants' morphology change much depending on different factors which makes the subject incredibly hard and is feared upon in our college) including their scientific and family names by the end of the semester. Thanks to this tip, remembering latin names came easy. Thanks for the info by the way, I'll try implementing the other techniques in my studies.
Subbed instantly. Can't believe I missed this channel till now!
Thank you for the study tips. I learned a lot of tips from you that I have been looking for but wasn't sure how I would do them. You explained very clearly and imaginatively. My problem is my reading comprehension sucks and I don't absorb the material well. So I think your tips will help me a lot with that. I'll give it a shot! Thank you again!
I appreciate your hard work and effort put into these videos😊😊😊
when I use the first method you mentioned, i actually end up solving it myself when I really think about it!
I really hit a wall when I was studying for my exams, this really helped. It's difficult to get studying but I find that when I actually get into it, it becomes much easier, but if I stop for like a day or 2, I find it really hard to get back into the groove.
Thalia Ram thanks! I want to do a video soon on that specific problem - getting "into" studying. I see the same problem with doing other things (like going to the gym), and I've seen it called the problem of Ignition Costs. I'll see what I can dig up to help with that :)
Thomas Frank hope you get around to doing this vid soon :)
These are AMAZING tips! It really goes to show how much research you've done into these techniques, and it shows you've really put them to use! I've been searching all over RUclips looking for a video that offers good study tips and, you're right, they're all very basic compared to this! Thank you so much for all the videos!
A side question: If diffused thinking is more effective learning new material, then should this method be implemented during classroom lectures? If so, how should one go about doing this?
I usually watch videos on RUclips on double sped. No need for it here! You speak fast, getting to the point quickly and your advices are just great!
awesome video, love these tips
+relaxingrecords - Relaxing Study Music - thanks!

I love this video! Thank you so, so much for all the research that went into making it, it has been incredibly useful.
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful :)
It really pisses me off that school's force you to learn a million things but neglects to teach you *how* to learn them...
Your chanel is the best one I've ever seen for this kind of tips...this are perfect, clear, concise and great research. Thank you soooo much!
5 years later, I back for more Thomas
Ashlyn - you can find WankiKani at wanikani.com, though I believe it's still in beta and only accessible to people who subscribe to TextFugu, which is their online Japanese textbook (an excellent resource).

+Thomas Frank I know japanese. yay.
Sometimes I record myself reading my notes and then I plug in my earphones and its gets in my head forever
These are some of the most diverse tips I've seen. Great job! I'm a subscriber now.
I appreciate this information. I'm an older, old as dirt student, and these suggestions have given me ideas that will help me be a better student, and more prepared for the next semester. Thank you for your time and effort in putting this video together. Excellent.
Subscribed! Finally someone with actual useful advice!
Xandria Ravenheart thank you!
Quite honestly its like i am speechless.... I have seen alot of videos relating study tips but this one is motivating, inspiring and informative. Thankyou so much for the video. SUBSCRIBED!
aliza Khan thank you!
Hey Thomas, just wanted to say this was autoplaying in the background, and I have to say, the glow up is real. Everything from scripting to production quality, it's really great to see how much you've learned and implemented over the years. :) I know I sound patronising as hell, but it's well intentioned!
You're awesome! Thank you so much :) I've been struggling in college right now, and it's making me lack so much confidence in my academic career. Thanks for the tips.
I wanna learn more about the focused and diffused thinking and how to alter the state of mind to do so. Since just turning away from stuff and walking around isn't always effective if your brain is being stubborn with the topic fresh at hand.
ShoeLaccey Mintyoreos Staecey I'll definitely be diving more in-depth on that topic. I'll be going through A Mind for Numbers very thoroughly this summer, so stay tuned :)
The last tip is so useful! I actually never thought of it that way ..
+Ismonoff fuck off
Julia Hörmayer let's study together
Siddhartha Mishra I agree
Mnemonics and Loci are two effective techniques that works for me. Three years ago I hate memorization but now.. I love it!
Fabulous is a habit app I use to "pull myself together". I have three routines I use everyday and of couse you decide for yourself how many and how long those is. Among my routines is "studying" and "reading". There is a timer that you can pause and play and i love that i can hear music while the app is active. Also it gives a little sound when you have been doing your habbit for i while so you don't have to look at your phone all the time and there is also a little icon that show how long you are in the progress. Good app for keeping yourself at work and for getting new habits 😊
At least I know how to remember the tips from this video now
U must be a straight A student. omg your brain is awesome. thanks for the help
I'm watching this video to help give me ideas for my younger high school students. They've never really been taught to study and they've got ACT/SAT coming up. I really appreciate these techniques and will be making an activity for students to do as they go along with the video.
This was very helpful, I look forward to trying a few of these. Thank you!
Great channel, its my first video here and I already suscribe before the video ends
Thank you sooooooooooooooo much!!!I'm using every single tip and it WORKS!
Shiloh Hunte no problem!
I owe you my life, this channel was one of the reasons my life changed for the better, I love this channel. Keep going, brother.
Having watched a lot of your more recent content it's really cool to see how the quality of your videos/presentation style has improved. This video is great and informative but I noticed you spoke much faster/seemed a bit nervous and stumbled over words. Not to mention less graphics between tips. Nowadays you strike me as more confident in your presentations and always make the videos entertaining. To me it's a testament to how you seek to improve the quality of your videos and continue to do so successfully, thanks for the great content and showing me the importance of always striving for improvement!
I've been using the method of loci for sometime without knowing it was a thing. I used it especially when I have to remember vocab words 15 mins before a quiz
I really want to get into the car industry as an electrical engineer but I always struggle with math. Just started physics for the first time ever In my life. Past two years I havnt been good in college. I have 3 days off from work compared to last year when I was working full time (60 hours) now I'm only working 4 days. I get worried. But this video looks like it'll help
I like the tip about breaking a problem down into sentences, and being able to pin point where a problem is specifically. Also, I like the concept of focused versus diffuse thinking and it's relation to the promo door technique. I also agree with your suggestion to use a calendar reminder tool, especially now that I am aware of akrasia and increasingly spaced intervals for better recall. Thank you.
Where has this Chanel been all my lifee 😭😭 I honestly think you don't realise how much you've helped me and not just with my studying omg thankyou
what do you suggest to do on study breaks? previously in high school i would go on my phone, but then my 15 min break would turn into an hour
I would set a timer, and get yourself in the habit of going back to work as soon as the timer goes off. You can literally do anything, just make sure you aren't doing anything study related in those 15 minutes. I would suggest walking around as you were just sitting for a while. Maybe do some chores, eat a snack, talk to someone, or check your phone if you want. Just relax your mind on your break by doing tasks that soothe the brain rather than challenge it.
I would not recommend talking to others. Do something that requires a moderate degree of physical/mental energy on a specific task. I use such breaks to organize my work space -- or just a specific area of it.
Probably walk around and take a breather. After like the 2 hour mark all I can do for 5 minutes is lay in bed and try to refresh myself xD
THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME STUDY!!! I have exams coming up and this was such a great help!!!!
Pukuls Rod glad I could help :)
Wonderful explanation! Thanks! Hope more people watch these helpful videos. Thmas is wonderfully eloquent and presents the ideas in a clear and organized fashion. I am full of admiration.
Amazing, i love these videos, a lot of the things you touch on affect me too so this is a lot of good advice, thank you!!
>watches how to study videos so I can start studying
>never learns how to study
>never starts studying
Kick ass X6 poster my man. That was my favorite back in the day.
This video was in an assignment for school but i honestly enjoyed this thoroughly. Really helpful and informational.
Fantastic content, brother! Thank you for your commitment to excellence and sharing!
Just had to sub, thx man
Michael Atwood thank you!
I think you should have elaborated a bit more on how to actually apply diffused thinking to studying? I mean what does that look like when I'm studying
Yeah, I still have no idea how to apply diffused thinking. I kind of know what it is from watching this video, but how do I actually use it?
Thank you for this video!! Studying has become a complicated area for me lately. I definitely will be applying some of these techniques to my routine.
I love your content....thank you for making my college life easier
"Bring your cat to class to reduce stress and so you get to meet the nice folks at Animal Control" That cracked me up straight away 😂
Hello, Nice to meet you here
This is Gold!! U may have just saved my uni life. Ur the best.
Malcam Prasad thank you! I'm glad I could help :)
Hello, nice to meet you here
These ideas are really helpful. Thanks for sharing them. Subbed.
Wow, looking back to this video, I can see how far you have come
Dude , this really works. Been using your tips for a while and i got a GPA of 4.0 . Thanks btw.
i was so done with those ' plan your study sessions ' ' listen to fun music ' ' put chocolate between passages ' and the i realised that i use loci on my history class . i CAN'T do history :D so i put a gossip scene in my head then i tell everyone i know trying to make it funnier and cleaner as i go . and it works A LOT
Your videos always give me motivation to start doing something!
A nicely produced video, and properly edited. Thumbs up, Thomas F.!
come on we all know how to study. 95% of the people here started studying the day before the exam and realized they didnt have enough time to catch up 2 months of stuff so they look for a miracle method to study faster.
+MrWalalaa Are you some kind of mind reading witch?!?!?!
yeah
+MrWalalaa Everythings fine. I still got 2 Weeks ;D Kappa
There are no miracle ways to pass an examination except you study very hard or you intend to hack the examination body or school websites. I will encourage you to read and pass your exams. Stop procrastinating because it is the mother of all F.
MrWalalaa lol that's so me 😂😂😂
New RUclips crush. Thanks for the tips :D
***** glad you're finding them useful :)
Thank you!! This was way more helpful than other videos I've looked up!
It is quite fascinating how much you have smoothed out in your presentation since you made this.
Nice tips, but most importantly, I dig your heavy stubble bro. Which blade cover do you use ?
+Francesco Emanuele Russo no joke - I use a $20 electric razor that my parents got me for Christmas 8 years ago. I've never changed the blade or anything.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I use a #2 for both my hair and beard.
+Thomas Frank thanks! Stay manly 👍
+Thomas Frank It looks really good! I'm jealous man!😝
Haha I've wondered this too

im 4 yrs late but YES this is so true 😭🖐️
i really find your channel helpful and useful, i appreciate all the work you put in your videos, seriously thank you, compared to all the junk that is published on youtube, I am a medical resident and I sure hope i had those study tips back in med school, but we always have exams and studying just never ends! Keep being awesome!!
I would like to suggest that you add a suggested or a recommended list of books to read in your blog, because you recommend books in almost all of your vides and i always want to check them out, so having a list of all of them would be great and helpful,
thanks again, and good luck!
thank you. love all of these tips. going to ry all of them x
Would the "Method of loci" be the same technique as Sherlock Holmes "Mind Palace" ?
Yes
Coolest tips I've ever seen on RUclips :) :*
Glitzy Glam :)
So helpful! I’m done with my masters degree, but I’m taking a Personal Training exam soon so I needed to brush up on exam tips 😊 subscribed!
Thanks for this Thomas!
