I really liked this video. This has been a huge issue for me. I have a lot of difficulty getting myself to study consistently and to break things down. That you mentioned to get rid of some choices - that specifically what I had been working on over the past week. I basically have to schedule in study time in order to actually do it and be accountable for it. My schedule is simple and consistent enough to have a good several hours before classes everyday to study; and I say before cause there is no way I'll do it after classes. I have afternoon classes, and I ride the bus, so by the time I get home, I'm exhausted, hot, and dead-minded. I find I study better in the mornings anyways - no matter how much I hate waking up in the mornings. So I'm working that into my schedule. I've tried to break things down before, but I always put off even small tasks, cause it would make me anxious. I felt like I had too many tasks on my list. So I'm still not certain how I'll handle that, but I do like how you mentioned getting started the day the assignment is given. I feel like that'll will be an enormous help in me dealing with big assignments. I used to just ignore the assignment for a few days lol.
This is so important to learn, because once you start your career it isn't broken up in semesters and there isn't a summer break (or any break at all).

One thing that always helps me to stay on track is to frequently reflect. I look back on the things I've done well and try to learn from the successes and the failures I've made. As one great man said, I try to pick up the embers from the past, and not the ashes. Reflecting helps me to remember who I am and look forward to who I can become and maintain a vision. As the great Helen Keller once said, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." Prayer is one big way I try to maintain a vision every day but there are other ways. Great video as always! I've been trying to organize my life more lately and this was very helpful! Thanks! Keep it up! :)

Since noticing my slackagery I've quit my job to dedicate my time to bettering myself and my academics. Needless to say I'm beyond excited! Once again, great informative video. Keep it up 🤓
Hi, I just started combining Todoist an Google Calendar and I have a couple of questions: 1 In Todoist (or Asana) you set the deadlines for homework assignments and make your own for bigger projects. Those are the due dates. But how do you figure out when you're actually going to do them? Do you change the task date in your task manager or do you manage that with yet another program? 2 HOw do you deal with assignments that are, say, two months away? Do you also plan when you're going to do those, or do you do that when it's actually time to begin working on the project?
Where do you draw your limit for trying to do too much over the course of a semester? (hobbies, work, hobbies that may become future work, uni, chores, emails, etc) How do you decide what to cut? What if you love/feel you need all of it?
I started watching your videos as a student aaaaannd... I'm still watching them as a newbie teacher. Thanks a lot Thomas and congrats for helping a french student get all the way through college!

Hi Thomas. I've recently learned a couple of rules that have made a massive difference in staying on top of my things to do: 1. The 2 minute rule. From Getting Things Done, it basically says that if something on your to-do list takes less than 2 minutes to do and there's no obstructions, do it there and then. This may seem at first like you're spending a lot of time doing random things, but as you start clearing down all those little things that have taken up your to-do list, you start feeling a lot less encumbered by all these promises to yourself that you keep breaking. It also means that stuff doesn't get a chance to pile up, and is frequently done at the first opportunity. 2. The 20 second rule. Getting started on something should take about 20 seconds. Like the dedicated study area you mention (which also has psychological benefits for memory and motivation as well), it means you're taking down barriers to doing something even in small chunks. This complements the two-minute rule nicely, because it means you're likely to be frequently moving stuff forward when you're in that area, and it also means you're not dreading even the setup of something.
0:00 - 0:42 happened to me. Not with homework, but class assignments. One week I was like, "yes, nothing to do!" The next day I went to English class and was assigned to write a 5 page paper. I forgot what the topic was. Next day, I got another assignment from World History. It was a 10 min class presentation consisting of me and my partner. I believe we did Greek vs Roman religion. After that class I had Music Appreciation. We had to write a 5 page paper on a particular musician that we knew rarely anything about. I chose Mozart; brilliant musician and man, I tell you. (I had Economics after English, but I dropped it after I was failing. I didn't like the class, and I didn't care about it either. Plus, I was falling behind on my other classes.) So after I dropped that class, everything became less stressful, and when the semester was over, I had a 3.5 GPA. I got through all of the paper assignments and passed with an "A" on all of them. I got a "C" my part of the presentation because I took too long and kept fumbling over my words. Presentations are NOT my forte! Anyway, moral is this: I waited until the last minute when things got hectic. I now realize that in college there is no "break." I also realized tackling assignments early is best because teachers can review them and see if there are any mistakes. The grading in my school is dumb, specifically when it comes to getting an "A." 90-100 is an "A," which is the highest grade you can get in my school. It's dumb - there should be an "A+," but whatever. I could've done better percentage-wise if I gave my papers in for review.
I've been watching your videos like crazy before my school starts in September! You have such amazing ideas that you present in the most interesting and fun way!
I can certainly agree with Cal Newport. I run a couple of businesses and am also a doctoral student. I had to take my third semester, 16 weeks, off to deal with various business and personal issues. I managed to deal adequately with most of them, and during that time I also took a short writing course, but it was still difficult to get back into the grind. I outlined my entire program and included two more "pauses", but I have decided to revamp the plan so that I only take half a semester off at a time, but also take a few more "pauses". This will keep me from getting too far behind while also giving me more opportunities to resolve business and personal issues before they build up so much that I need the entire semester. This may delay completing my doctorate by a year, but I should produce a better dissertation while also keeping my businesses running. Even during a pause, I'll still be reviewing literature.
Your videos are so awesome and helpful... They keep me motivated at school. -Now I can't wait for back to school- 😂😂 But really I ❤ them. Subscribed :3

I used to be studying all the time I stay up, but last study year it did nothing except making me exhausted, and I got more and more scared of work amount and falling behind every day. This year I'll try your advice. Milestone deadlines are good to ensure you finish everything in time. Having these "Sunday afternoons" to set the plan to the current week seems more efficient than thinking each time what I'm going to do right now, like I used to think last year. Thanks.
Thanks RUclips for recommending this video. I'm in just the situation because earlier in the term I had three essays due within a week of each other, and to mentally avoid doing them I procrastinated until the last moment. As a result I wasted two weekends which I now I have to make up. Thank God for this thing called the Reading Week.

All of your videos make me feel like I can actually get my motivation back despite the slump I've had for the last few years due to my depression. Thank you for all the work you do.
I am a new subscriber, in my 3rd year of a Doctor of Physical Therapy program and I wish I had these videos in undergrad and my master's degree. I would have saved so much time with your useful tips. Thank you for great videos I've watched about 20 of them lol. Going to try out Blinkist as well :)
i liked how you mentioned the 3 steps at the beggining and end of the video. it really helps to keep them in mind
Thanks! Keep it up! :)
I don't chime in too often here, because I'm a lurker, but just wanted to say your videos always help me out a lot. It's my senior year of college and I need all the assistance I can get. Wish me luck!
I'm really excited to apply this advice to my semester! I've been slacking these past few semesters due to bad habits and personal issues. Since noticing my slackagery I've quit my job to dedicate my time to bettering myself and my academics. Needless to say I'm beyond excited!
Once again, great informative video. Keep it up 🤓
Hi, I just started combining Todoist an Google Calendar and I have a couple of questions:
1 In Todoist (or Asana) you set the deadlines for homework assignments and make your own for bigger projects.
Thank you bro for uploading this. This is really helpful.
Where do you draw your limit for trying to do too much over the course of a semester? (hobbies, work, hobbies that may become future work, uni, chores, emails, etc)
How do you decide what to cut? What if you love/feel you need all of it?
TheShamansQuestion I second this question...wish I had the answer

You thought we wouldn't notice. But we did. God bless you.
why isn't this top comment
I just spend 10 minutes to find this, please tell me what time this is xd
NEVER MIND, FOUND IT YEAH :D
Cas Becker, how aboot me? 😢
It's confirmed he's INTP
Talk about using paper and pen, at least as another option. Some people don't respond as well to technology and apps.
I started watching your videos as a student aaaaannd... I'm still watching them as a newbie teacher. Thanks a lot Thomas and congrats for helping a french student get all the way through college!
Thomas Frank is my spirit animal, every video that has surfaced to my notifications have been worthwhile in some aspect of my life. Keep up the helpful tips, thanks!!
this is a lifesaver. ive started to get more organized but still end up extremely stressed trying to rush to finish things. im
going to do all of these things asap
Your chanel is great!! My only regret is I found it after my graduation... :/
But love your videos!!! :D
Dude, the amount of growth your channel has had is the quality of your videos is phenomenal (not that they weren't good before). I can clearly see the amount of effort you've put into getting better at video editing and improving your content. Your channel rocks!
It has been a week into the new school year, and this video came out at the perfect time.
Oh, dear me.
Thanks to you I got perfect GPA last semester,
Once again, thank you bro!
Hi Thomas. I just wanted to let you know that you're my inspiration to keep improving my studying methods :) as an ex-college student (now i'm starting a master's degree) I think it's crucial to mantain the motivation and learn efficiently, which I've been able to do by watching your videos! so thank you so much for all your effort!! Saludos desde México!
I've recently learned a couple of rules that have made a massive difference in staying on top of my things to do:
Plus, I was falling behind on my other classes.)
So after I dropped that class, everything became less stressful, and when the semester was over, I had a 3.5 GPA.
Let’s be honest we are watching this so we can put off our homework.
Not me, already finished all of them.
Thank for saving the sponsor for the end of the video. This upload was really dense so I'm glad the ad break was well segmented. Great work as always.
Your videos are so awesome and helpful... They keep me motivated at school. -Now I can't wait for back to school- 😂😂
But really I ❤ them. Subscribed :3
Hey Thomas,
I've been watching your videos since probably about two or three years ago and they still really help me to be a productive person and getting tasks done, whether it's me training for sports or getting work done and earning those awesome A's. I could tell your channel has grown and I really want to thank you and encourage you for what you've done and to tell you to keep going because you have no idea how much of a benefit you're adding into many people's lives, and not just students I bet. I've been using Habitica for a long time now which you've introduced to me and that played a huge role in keeping me organized these years. I'm introducing my friends to it as well. Your videos are only getting better and I find them extremely helpful, probably my number one channel on RUclips where I actually learn fascinating and amazing advice and earn a benefit from in life. I hope to meet you sometime when I become rich and famous, haha. You're so amazing for doing this. Thanks Thomas
Thomas, thank you so much. As an international student (freshman) in America, I love the freedom of choice we have with our professors and subjects. But that freedom comes along with a huge amount of responsibility and it's kinda hard to "adult" all of a sudden. But this video really calmed me down and now I'm ready to tackle those assignments. Thanks again, appreciate the videos :)
Love your videos. Also, while preventing slumps and falling behind is great, maybe you could do a video about how to recover from early procrastination in the semester, since its quite common to start motivated and then drift off for a while. Thanks a lot, keep it up!
Thanks! I love your videos!!! I'm so happy you are hosting a Crash Course Series!!!!! YAY!
I’m probably the worst student in my year😭 it’s not my tests its my homework
same the quizzes i ace but my homework never gets done

I can do your assignments. Just email me. My work's quality is exceptional and I have lots of testimonials.
Relate to so many of the things you mentioned! I'm forever falling behind and my to do list are currently such a mess that I can't even use them and keep making new ones which just makes more mess. Really excited to take your advice and get on top of things! Thanks Thomas!
Back to school at the beginning of September, got my planner ready, now time to finish my summer work to have a clean slate for homework and keep on top of it!
Stopped by to say I followed your advice and have kicked ass this semester in my online Masters program. Also I'm really enjoying Blinkist. Thanks so much!
Back to say straight A's two semesters in a row thanks to the advice in this video.

Not only I really appreciate your videos, I absolutely admire the way you inspire me to get organized and to get good grades. The way you speak really motivates me, and each of your videos helps me working on every little part of my personality too. Also, I am Italian so watching these vids really helps me with my English. Keep going man!
I'm SO thankful for all of your videos. Thank you!
This is the advice I've been looking for. Thank you
I really appreciate how you usually put the sponsors at the end of your videos so we can just stop the video if we're not interested. Love your videos
Somehow this video dropped just as I needed it. Thanks Thomas. You're the man!
Great video, thank you so much for all your useful tips!
Pause at 2:13 and just read that document
It's 2:52 here can't sleep am in holidays
And your videos just motivated me to start doing some researchs and try to organize my next year NOW
Thank you really excellent videos😊
My No 1 tip for watching these helpful videos is to watch them in 1.5x and with subtitles. Helps me to learn more time efficiently.
Thanks.
Thank you soooooo much for making this video I was so stuck on school work this is so helpful
Please do a video about dealing with discouragement which comes from not only teachers but parents and relatives n friends etc like being told your career choice is shit
Aint No Saint I'm dealing with the same :/
Thanks Thomas.. this video is very helpful
sir hats off 🤩🤩
can you please post a video to improve daily habits and self respect 🙏🙏
1. Every new video you upload helps me to deal with the problem I'm living at the moment
2. How come you're looking younger?!
3. Where can I find that game?

When you are 3 weeks behind in virtual school and are looking at videos to solve the problem instead of doing schoolwork. 💀
I love this video it breaks down everything very well.
Daddyyyy 👅im so glad i found your channel. I am currently in my 2nd year at university. Being someone who has a lot of anxiety and who is really introverted my 1st year at uni was kind of a disaster. Your channel has helped me so much in terms of organisation and helped me stay motivated. Im looking forward to have a better academic year and to put in more efforts. Thank you for delivering quality content.
