Well I'm a vintage Porsche racer and I advise you for a street car to remove the fuel cell and install the regular tank. The fuel cell foam crumbles after a few years and can block a filter instantly. Fuel cells need the foam replaced regularly. Good luck.
As a former foreign car mechanic specializing in German cars, such as BMW, and Porsche (PORSCH-AH is the correct pronunciation... a porch is what is on your house!) I think that if you went over this car and changed out the fuel cell to a proper gas tank, put in a fresh set of Bosch platinum plugs.... new wires, etc and go over the carbs real well possibly even rebuilding them...... you'll find this car will run completely different and just for peace of mind when you have the plugs out - do a compression test. I am a big fan of you Chad, but like many of your other fans I am begging you to have someone that knows what they are doing work on this gem... and learn from them. Again I am not trying to sound like a hater..... but just like you take the time and teach about the things that you know allow someone to guide you on this beautiful old Porsche... keep up the good work bad Chad and team! Congratulations Jolene on getting one of the cars of your dreams!
Yes you’re correct - what happened to the engine when the other person damaged it ? Your right it needs a strip down and refresh for the street - Cheers
Chad, when Jolene started driving she short shifted it which is a no no for an air-cooled engine they need to spin to circulate oil and air to stay cool! Besides the weak battery it's likely to be vapor-locked! VW + Porsche engines need to rev! Do not lug them. Great car!
Hey you guys, hello from California, I've been a follower of your show since the beginning, I know those flat four engines, for one thing they are cold starters, don't dog it when you drive it, it likes high RPMs. Only burn the highest octane gasoline that you can find, those flat 4's run best on airplane fuel, the higher the octane the better. I use Valvoline racing oil 20-50 only. I build custom racing baja bugs and they have built up engines in them as well. Adjust the valves every year if you keep it. It's basically a VW style engine. That is a clean 66 912 you have, enjoy it, but do as I said.
My guess based on the guy you bought it from it should be in top shape. You should join the Porsche club and get to know the people that can help you. Don’t tinker with it. And don’t fill it with fuel and let it sit without driving it. What a beautiful car. Awesome find Jolene.
Chad: fuel cells are only good for 5 to 7 years. After that the bladder inside the metal box starts to fall apart and you need a new fuel cell. You really should not be driving a car with a fuel cell that old. You are risking a major fire
Just got a scale model of one of these. A 66 Porsche in white . Got a real 80 corvette as well. Getting ready to repaint it . I’ve also got this 1975 Buick Gran Sport colonnade that’s been sitting in a barn now for the past several decades that needs a restoration. It’s numbers matching with its original motor. It’s got the widest 350 in it I’ve ever seen.
Jolene , Your driving a very stable antique Porsche 912 , Your 10 to 2 position on the steering wheel is excellent . You were smiling from ear to ear going down the road. Super Nate needs go over it and tune her up . Starting with plugs and wires , new battery , , Carb adjustments , fresh gas and etc.
You really have a piece of sports car history with this Porsche! It lists two of the most famous and winning drivers Hurley Haywood and Brian Redman. They raced just about every class of sports car as well as Le Mans.
That car was running on 2 1/2 cylinders ,when that guy was driving it on the trailer ,and I think he knew that it was running bad .Buying any car with out checking it out all the way to make sure you don't get stuck with someone else's glad it's gone car .Especially a Porsche that you just payed big bucks for .Blue nosers never change . Hope it's not a dead hole for Her sake .Jolene will have a blast driving it when it's running right . Very cool car.
Check 912 bbs it’s a forum for 912s. They can answer almost any question you can think of. Lots of cool info. Example don’t check oil when it’s hot let it set a bit or you will overfill it
Porshe one of my favorites my brother had a 930 turbo, he was a drug dealer ha ha ah . Serious though that car is badass I had a 1965 Notchback VW I loved that car i was forced to sell when i was young and would love another one or a ghia or fastback those are tight too, i put a sandrail motor i built in it. 2180cc. Have fun bro.
I wouldn't worry about all these fuel cell concerns. Yes, they have an expiry date for racing but the bladder will actually last way longer than any steel tank. The only thing that deteriorates is the foam, which you don't really need if you're not racing. Take the old foam out if it's still in there and run it.
Chad and Jolene when you first got the car the man said he had put a gallon of fuel in and you tipped a big bottle of sea foam into the fuel and that was after it had been on a test drive. My belly button is I would add more fuel in the tank cause the sea foam may have over powered the fuel just a thought. Keep up the great work the both of you
This is basically the same running gear as my old 356C (that I unfortunately sold in the 80s for $2K). These are so easy to work on. If you have gas and spark it should run. If the float needles are stuck, fix them. Barely more complex than a Beetle. I have 3 air-cooled 911s and they are pretty easy to work on. Of course knowing them in detail helps but they're pretty easy. This 912 is really easy. Did Chad divulge what they paid for it? "It's a racecar"! Yeah, but a slow racecar. The idle speed is too high, looked like 2K after warm-up.
These cars are dirt easy to work on. Once dialed into, extremely reliable. i drive mine on 2500 kms weekends with the boys into remote areas (no cell service) looking for more twisty roads. They are a blast to drive on the edge.
You guys have a real gem here! It's completely understandable why Jolene is so happy! There are so many great comments and you guys should really be able to benefit from them all! Hoping you really have fun with this baby and hey, wearing seat belts might be a good idea!
Chad I’ve seen a few car fires over the years, my nephew lost a newer Camaro this summer. Whatever you do get a good fire extinguisher and keep it on the cage somewhere. It’s not worth losing a fine ride like that. I carry them in all of my vehicles. Good insurance! Congratulations to both of you - it’s a beautiful ride!
Hi Chad, Jolene, & Fina, it is a beautiful Porsche and so is Jolene's smile, she is really going to enjoy having and driving it! I believe it was stored with no gas in it so there should be no crud in the fuel cell! I also believe the previous owner said that being a race car it had no chokes hooked up so you might have to pump the pedal like the previous owner did or pull the air cleaners off and hold the butterflys closed until it fires if you can get at them. I would also pull the dipstick and make sure the oil does not smell of gas because if it gets flooded to badly it will end up in the oil pan! I also noticed in the chat a Mark Armstrong said he worked for Porsche and those are Zenis carbs and you have to pump the gas and that you may think its flooded but its not. Jolene you look like the car was made for you when you were sitting in it, have fun!
The day you looked at the car the owner had to pump the gas pedal like crazy to get it started. The Carburator probably gunked up. The accelerator pump on the carb might be stuck. Replace filter and if you can get started, i'd run a double strong dose of carburator injector cleaner in the fuel. I'd even drizzle some in the throat and rev it up. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will clear. Check vacum hoses for leaks.
Hey guys, incredible purchase and I couldn't help but notice the smile on both of your faces. In my 65 kombi I have an amber light that comes on for the oil pressure etc . I noticed a similar light on, on your dash. No massive issue but worth checking non the less. Definitely see if those parts could be put back on. Would make a significant difference. Being a push rod motor mine were worn which caused my light to come on. Enjoy guys your in a very prestigious club now, this is made for driving.
Best bang for your money; I think, a big change for your car would be to tighten the Generator belt. Put the batteries on a charger (Take the Generator pully off and pull a couple of shims out and or just replace the belt). Of course there is other things like; A Hot set of Bosch platinums are good too, adjust the valves, take the Distributor rotor off and put a new straight one in that doesn't have the RPM limiter, change the Oil if it's not as clean as the day it went in, Put in the longest Carburetor emulation tubes you can get, Advance the ignition timing as far as you can and or have the distributor set to go to full advance sooner, Remove the vacuum advance and plug, Put those Hemi Heads on (you showed us in the video) and shift between 2000 and 3500 running at 3200. I think, The Carb leak might be gas setting on top of the throttle plate because, someone was afraid of flooding it. Keep in mind; NO CHOKE Porsches don't know what a choke is. Pump it up! Porsches love gas and shut the car off don't let it Idle too long! Also, personal favorites; Iridium is even stronger than platinum. It shares the same benefits over copper as platinum, but it is said to be eight times stronger than platinum, and it has a higher melting point so it can handle the hottest, highest-performing engines I think, the Platinums are less likely to fuel foul.
Been Sitting (Not Driven) Since 2013!...That Fuel Cell MUST Be Replaced With A Stock Fuel Tank, No Fuel Cells! Most Likely It's Fitted With 2ea. Solex 40P II-4 carburetors.. 1.} Remove & Replace The Fuel Cell With A Stock Fuel Tank, 2.} Remove & Rebuild Those 2 Solex 40P II-4 carburetors, 3.} Disconnect The Fuel Line At The Fuel Tank Fuel Outlet, With The 2 Solex 40P II-4 carburetors Removed From The Intake Manifold...Blow The Fuel Line Out With 30 Psi Of Compressed Air. New Fuel Filters! If You Follow This Protocol, The Fuel System Will Be Free Of Deteriorated Fuel Cell Foam And Other Contaminants.
Congratulations on your Porche Jolene. i had a 1970 targa, was my dream. put a regular gas tank in, rebuild the carbs it will run fine, dont be afraid to get on it before you shift it. it can motor.
Nate will get it running awsome. That is one badass car!!!!! I think my 1966 fastback mustang was built with this style mind in mind. I even painted my stang Porsche red/guards red!!!!
You clearly don’t know what “running good” means. It’s too late to tell you now, but you shouldn’t have driven it until it was fixed. Short shifting an air cooled engine will over heat it. Over reving an air cooled engine when it’s not getting the proper fuel mixture is just as bad!
My Nephew dream car was a Porsche he got one at a really good price only drove it once and while found out very quick when you had to do repairs on it nothing was cheap a rebuilt fuel pump cost him 3,ooo dollars and as thee old owner told him she ran her best when you did a 100 mph in her and that was on the 400 hwy in Ont between 2 or 3 in the morning & he was a retired cop so he knew what time was the best to go out at to give her a good run & not everyone can work on them l found thats why l didn't buy it off my nephew & thats going back atleast 35 years ago you bought a rich man or ladys car keep working
Im happy for you guys. I dont have any advice, i figure you guys are quite adept. Glad its running good, and once you feel more comfortable, I think youll find, its got plenty of power. dennis collins has a youtube. hes had quite a number of porsche. He most likely might have a fuel tank
As a new to me 356 or 912 I would set valves, adjust barbs, points and timing, new transmission fluid, engine oil and brake fluid as a baseline. I would also remove the roll cage which is really dangerous in a street car without a helmet.
Chad , you should check this place out here in Eufalua Ok . We’re at the Foothills of the Ozark’s . If you’re into fishing, this place is like the Bass fishing capital of the world . The lake itself has about seven hundred and fifty miles of shoreline with rocky islands scattered throughout. A lot of cliff hanger homes perched into the rocky cliffs and some love their tree houses. . The property taxes are extremely low as are the home prices. The town of Eufalua has a population of just under three thousand people and remains me of living in the television show from Mayberry ,the Andy Griffith show . We live right on the lake itself. The people around here drive around town in their golf carts with some on their riding lawnmowers .
Chad, the starter should be turning over 3 times as fast and there is something definitely going on with the carb. A needle or the float is stuck in the carburetor...depending on if it is getting too much gas or to little! And everyone is right about getting the RPM's up before shifting...a good VW engine comes alive by running it strong! I think that car was made for Jolene.
Nice score! I just have to say, the views from your place are spectacular. Probably hard to appreciate it when you're there all the time, but take a moment to let it soak in every day.
Just off the top of my head I would have someone look into the cylinder head bolt torque and valve adjustment. People can correct me if I am wrong . But you need to loosen and retorque the head bolts. Reason being the bolts get tight and then pull out of the case or break. Always inspect a race engine before you run it .
The Porsche is really beautiful. 😎👍 It just needs a general overhaul... That is a legendary "Momo" sports steering wheel. They were very popular here in the European continent to customize the various road cars with the "tuning" trend. It is very comfortable to hold but if you had big wheels and you did not have power steering, it was a bit hard to maneuver in parking lots
I'm going to say there's probably a clogged air bleed on a carb, it's setting up a siphon and gas is flowing from the float bowl even when it's parked. If you remove the air cleaner and look into the carb throat (engine off) you may see gas seeping from a transfer slot or port. If the throttle plate is wet after being parked, there's your problem, a clogged air bleed. Edit: Air bleeds are usually a brass ball pressed into holes on the sides of the carb body, they're not removable, all you can do is soak them and hit them with compressed air. Jet type bleeds, such as with Holley carbs, are easily removed.
How cool would it be for someone to see your Porsche and know exactly what it did and have pictures of its racing days. I think we know who’s getting Porsche pajamas for xmas😊
Ahh...few bugs to fix not a big deal.. battery belt fresh gas tune up and I'm sure it will be fine..like the seller said they kind of put this motor together sure it's just fine like I said..nice little toy..great shape ❤🎉😊
Jolene, you have a beautiful car, Congratulations. I did notice in the engine compartment that the fuel filter is in a dangerous spot. If it was to wear through it sprays fuel onto the distributor. But welcome to the world of dual weber carbies. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Replace the rubber fuel lines yesterday, it would be a damn shame to see it go up in flames. The carb looking wet is a red flag not to ignore, it was leaking oil or likely gas backing it out of the garage onto the trailer. It’s gotta be dry, raw fuel on the cases, heads, exhaust or distributor/plug wires is begging for trouble. Adjust the valves, you’ll notice a big change if they were out of spec. Sounds like an exhaust leak as well.
The Porsche engine is really similar to a VW and they do not run right if it isn’t charging well. One suggestion is to convert it over to an alternator kit and replace the generator not to expensive to swap it out. The starting issue is likely the carbs, may want to check the distributor to see if it has point style ignition if so swap that out for electronic. The engine as is should be a fun little driver the bigger race parts will hurt drivability and run the risk of running too hot. Beautiful car, congratulations
After years of VW and Porsche vehicles I have owned sounds like you could use a good tune up valve adjustment fuel filter air cleaner cleaned up fresh oil clean carbs ups
Hey Chad I have built many VW bugs and you need to idle it down it is to high and you need to go through and do a valve adjustment. And in hotter weather run a thicker oil.
I agree with the comments about having someone look at it that knows them however, Nate is capable of learning with the books that you have and the internet help. The carbs sound good except for the high idle. High idle could be a idle adjustment or timing, fresh fuel may help too. The carbs adjust more like a motorcycle than a regular car. I start a 912 when hot with partial throttle. Experiment, they are either need more throttle of they are flooded. Both can be started with a strong battery. Your battery is junk, they start much better when they are turning over faster. Like others say, old fuel cells are not good to have when they start to fail. New gas tanks are cheap (for Porsche prices). When they sit for a while, the fuel pump needs a lot of battery to refill the carbs.
Hey guys love the car im not a euro car guy but live the porch 9 series. Just wanted to also say change the foam or the tank, but the idle is very high should be around 800rpm simple to do, nate can do it in just a minute, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Shes a bute!!👍😎
Ok, Jolene and Chad, First, start looking for a VW buse. Just for the motor, the VW came with a 1500 cc motor in the early years, then they went to a 1600 cc some of the 50s was 1200cc,don't quite me the bus was a 1835 cc or some were around there. The Porsche was about a 1990cc. The difference was the stroke and the jugs[ cylinder ]. There were 4 bolts that took the jugs off to make them bigger or smaller , to change the cc of the motor. The bus block was machined to accept the longer stroke crankshaft . The 1600 cc could be machined to get up to about 2200 cc. But the bus block was a little heavier. I use to have a bunch of books on them 30+ years ago. If I remember right, there is only 4 bolts that hold the motor in . Could change a motor in about 40 minutes.
Hi Chad and Jolene , I see that it was raced by Brian Redmond and Hurley Haywood which were amazing Drivers you should be proud of that purchase , Have fun in it Jolene You deserve it !!!
Agreed, congratulations on your first Porsche! I was a muscle car gear head my entire life until I bought my 997. Join PCA and you will find unlimited resources and knowledge about these wonderful machines. Maybe Magnus Walker will fly up and do an episode of OPP with you!! Much love you two.❤
Beautiful car badchad for a beautiful sweet jolene this car loves Hi Revs period don,t know if you do this or not but you all need to invest in some stabill adative and put in your gas tanks on all your cars that set and don,t get driven its just insurance for ALL your builds and cars that don,t get drove at all a lot beautiful ride sweet jolene it is its a keeper
Anytime something is flooded regardless of the carburetors and car, you hold the accelerator wide open so the squirters don’t squirt and you get all air and no more fuel.
After a 10 year sitting, You need to Drain the Fuel tank, put in fresh gas, have Nate clean the Carb's and change fuel filters, you will be good. And of course change the Oil and Filter, and check the Anti Freeze.
If you look back on your video when you took it for a test drive you'll notice that when the gent started it for you that he had to pump the throttle quite vigorously. Might be an idea to get Nathan to fit an electric fuel pump if possible. The standard for the 912 is a mechanical one. Could be a diaphragm problem. Or post 1972 there could be injector issues, conversley it could be carb issues if it's pre 1972. Either way it should get some attention. 👍👍

Yes!!!
probably will not listen
Not all fuel cells have foam. Being gravity fed from from front to back, I likely wouldn’t.
@@patrickborton827 Did it have a hatch on top? Pull it and see if foam swash bulkheads (baffles) have broken down and, if so, replace them.
😮😮😅😅 Fantastic advice man 😅

Por-shey! I read it in table book of all Porshe.
So?
This mechanic is kind enough to offer great advice
Excellent advice. I only disagree with the platinum plugs because they did not exist in 1966.

As an owner of 2 porsche 912 s I would clean/refresh the carbs first. Would not do seafoam ,dirt in the carbs first and check points .016 gap
👍
Beautiful ride..great to see Jolene driving it...
If anything, the cylinder heads will loosen up. Causing the compression to drop. And a head leak
And that’s not a race engine. It’s stock
When engine is flooded, hold pedal to the metal and it will get no gas and only air when cranking.😊😅
Jolene for the win! 👏🏼💯
Congratulations Jolene 🎉
That is my dream car Porsche 911- but a 912 will do the same. Enjoy it, hopefully one day I can mines
The Porsche is really beautiful. 😎👍
It just needs a general overhaul...
Nate will get this car running fantastic very soon
LOL
Think he should start with a compression test before anything else
Really enjoying the no content ,content since the exhaust backlash.
There is no basic cheap alternator conversion for this. It’s not a basic VW engine.
My first GOOD car was a 1966 912 Porsche. I paid $2,000.00 US Dollars back in 1973.
Jolene, I love your Porsche ❤️
This is a great car
After years of VW and Porsche vehicles I have owned sounds like you could use a good tune up valve adjustment fuel filter air cleaner cleaned up fresh oil clean carbs ups
They are actually simple cars..think Old VW as far as the thought process
just needs new gas some ,valve maintenence clean the Carb , and she is like new 😎
🐓🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾in the 🏠................🤣
Right on GATO 👍🙋♂️
Jolene is looking good in her new Porsche 👍
Great old classic - have fun with it!
Very nice car Chad and Jolene 👍👍
Hey Chad I have built many VW bugs and you need to idle it down it is to high and you need to go through and do a valve adjustment. And in hotter weather run a thicker oil.
Love the Porsche. Enjoy it and drive it .
Also, flush the brake fluid every 12-18 months. Just have your guy look it all over with the book in hand and you'll be fine.
Hey guys love the car im not a euro car guy but live the porch 9 series. Just wanted to also say change the foam or the tank, but the idle is very high should be around 800rpm simple to do, nate can do it in just a minute, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Shes a bute!!👍😎
Ok, Jolene and Chad,
First, start looking for a VW buse.
None of that applies to this
looks like its in great shape nice find, for a vw, and yes jolene's smile makes everything worthwhile
A dream Porsche. Good pick. Enjoy.
Much love you two.❤
Great purchase Jolene deserves that car
Beautiful car badchad for a beautiful sweet jolene this car loves Hi Revs period don,t know if you do this or not but you all need to invest in some stabill adative and put in your gas tanks on all your cars that set and don,t get driven its just insurance for ALL your builds and cars that don,t get drove at all a lot beautiful ride sweet jolene it is its a keeper
Dam , What a great buy , that's a keeper !
Come on Nate get it going 😎😎👍👍
Such a beautiful little car. Fantastic 👍
Awesome car. Nice find.
Chad the king of pointing out the obvious
As a car guy I wouldn't let bad chad near this thing!!!!!
Nice car Congrates Jolene and Chad
I love this old Porsche, my favorite the 1957 speedster 356 tub it’s a beauty sports car.
Beautiful car, absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on the great purchase.
Worked on many a Porsche in the 70’s. Get a full service on it and it’ll give you lots of pleasure.
With Porsches never back off mid corner, the tail will come around to meet you if you're not careful.
Yeah they have scolded a few yuppys even to this day tail happy beasts 😂
Anytime something is flooded regardless of the carburetors and car, you hold the accelerator wide open so the squirters don’t squirt and you get all air and no more fuel.
Happy for you both, well done
I thought you might announce how you were going to approach the chop! That would provoke enthusiastic comments.
Haha certainly would!
People would lose their minds 😂😂😂
Thats a good car. A real good find.
I think she is naturally connected with the car, first time driving & every shift was like she been driving it for 20 years every day :D
After a 10 year sitting, You need to Drain the Fuel tank, put in fresh gas, have Nate clean the Carb's and change fuel filters, you will be good. And of course change the Oil and Filter, and check the Anti Freeze.
The antifreeze is in a jug at the parts store. They are Air Cooled. This is a glorified VW.
Anti freeze 😂😂😂
That was a joke @@markglenn4929
@@markglenn4929 I don't think they know what air cooled is.
Lol. Old Porsches don’t have antifreeze man. It’s a VW air cooled engine. You rev the piss out of them as you drive it to keep the engine cool.
Its a beautiful car and worth putting real money into it.
Now you have the epitome of a 'drivers car' - to set the gold standard of automotive design.
Jolene deserves to have a running nice automobile especially a nice nimble little Porsche that matches her lifestyle.👍😎
Since you are NOT going to race it you should remove the side bars so you can get in better. All the hints about Porsch-ah are correct.
Your place is like a diorama scene. Love it 😍
Congratulations jolene i hope you get to enjoy it for many years to come
If you look back on your video when you took it for a test drive you'll notice that when the gent started it for you that he had to pump the throttle quite vigorously. 👍👍
