I would consider being a bruised orange a compliment. And I took John's advise when I was younger. We moved to the country ,had alot of children, fed them all peaches, and let them find Jesus on their own.
My 3 yr old daughter asks me all the time to "play peaceful waters Daddy" she recognizes it after two strums on the guitar every time it comes on. We started listening to it when she was a tiny baby and had a lot of trouble sleeping, but John would soothe here to sleep every time. I hope she hears this song when she's older and remembers it was her and daddy's song. Thank God for John Prine.
Just saw John for the second time tonight. I'm 28 years old. I went to the show with my 25 year old brother, 57 year old dad, and 77 year old grandmother. Grandma had never even heard of John until we told her we were taking her to see him a couple weeks ago. And she loved it. And I can now say I've seen a concert with my grandma. Thanks John. And dad for getting me into John. And thanks grandma for getting dad into music. And thanks me for thinking it'd be awesome to take grandma. Full circle!
I’m 68 and my kids love John since they were in there teens and a couple even younger I have six kids. We love Lake Marie (shadows) we used to yell when it was time. Adults now and we’ll always love John. Rest In Peace and say hi to D’Mac up there and maybe catch a few fish.
It is so touching to have a bond between a father and a daughter, and a song, such a beautiful, complex song as this is heavenly. This is forever a sweet reminder of your dad. Be well Marie.
Thank you Emzy. Indeed he is. Peaceful waters, fishing and whistling while smoking a cigarette that's nine miles long. I love you John Prine! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Weird thing is - that's what Emzy would whisper to John privately at the funeral. And it would be completely appropriate and heartfelt. But now we put it out to the world. Just strange. And a little self-aggrandizing.
I love this live version. "Oh Baby, we gotta go now." I swear I fell in love with that man ages ago and he resided about 40 miles from me in Brentwood. At least one of his homes.and for.the time his kids were in school. A dear friend of mine whose an actual good guy attorney in it for helping others, most humble with great humility, well his daughter went.to same private school in Nashville/Brentwood and he'd see Mr. Prine every morning and they became friends. I was given opportunity to meet him and his lovely wife but was too star struck and enjoyed my obsession from afar. Plus I didn't want to ogle over them. I wish now I could have just sincerely expressed my adoration for him, his song writing, amazing sense of humor and thanked him for his blessings and how he has touched me for 25 years. Always take advantage of an opportunity like that. I'm devastated I couldn't express my compassion for his talent. There's never been anyone like him and will never be another Master Prine. His family is as humble and lovely as you can imagine. Why can't there be more musicians like John Prine? Then again if there were, it would take away his unique magic. Rest in peace and yes, I hope he's enjoying a cigarette 9 miles long. 😉 Lake Marie is one of the most heartfelt compositions and recordings. I'm grateful to have seen him at Bonnaroo during the early days of the fest under a tent with true fans. I never tried to get close. Just found a perfect spot away from my friends and met new friends listening soulfully to his immeasurable performance.
My favorite John Prine tune out of many of his masterpieces. The Native Americans find two innocent babes not of their own kind and nurture them and name their lakes after them. Centuries later, modern society has turned that into a place where dogs were barking, cars were parking, loan sharks were sharking and narcs were narcing. What two bodies do we find? Naked bodies, faces horribly disfigured by some sharp object, their life blood turned into shadows. The singer's own love lost and slammed up on the banks of Lake Marie. Thank you John Prine for always writing songs that were about something specific but also about something vast and true. RIP
That entire story is just so amazing. Real and surreal at the same time. But mostly just real and vivid like the part about the girl falling asleep in his arms humming "louie, louie". American kids should have to take a John Prine class to graduate high school.
Oh I know he cared about the listeners, as though he knew and loved every single one of us. He didn’t care about the record companies wanting to control what he was wanting to do.
I AM 60 AND I WAS TURNED ON TO JOHN PRINE,IN THE 70S AND HE HAS GOT TO BE MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ALL THESE YEARS SURE WISH I COULD FIND OUT ABOUT THIS SONG,WHAT HIS CONNECTION WAS,TO TWIN LAKES WISCONSIN,I GREW UP IN TWIN LAKES,MANY YEARS IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEA,POST IT FOR ME PLEASE................. Man I can’t get enough of this song. I spent the first 40 years of my life at Lake Marie on the Illinois Wisconsin border and was probably conceived there too. Some of the best times of my life happened there. It was the only place that I’ve ever felt truly at home.
This song is a favorite of mine. John is Awesom he has a way of making you yell out Shadows no mater where you are or what your doing. Lots of good memories. And perhaps catch a few fish. We gotta go now.
I just heard the news about Prine's covid-19 diagnosis -- and came here to pay tribute to all that we might lose. My heart is with John and his family.
This song makes me cry - GOD, I LOVE HIM - he is a lyrical GENIUS - the first time I saw him AFTER his surgery, EVERYTIME he started singing, I started crying - I am so happy that he is still performing, I've tried to see him everytime he comes to my area - LOVE YOU JOHN.....
I asked Google what song was Johns favorite, and this popped up. First time I heard it was about 2mos ago. Now it's one of my favorite songs ever. RIP John. He has a way....
Still so sad about his passing. It's comforting to read all of the comments. Thanks everyone for sharing all of the memories and thoughts of John. I only discovered him when Tree of Forgiveness came out, but he quickly felt like a family member, long lost brother. I was lucky enough to see him once, brought my father and will never forget it.
I discovered John Prine a singer song writer poet only recently and wonder now how i missed him in 65 years. What a discovery. All his songs have a deceptive simplicity with universal perennial age old themes that have relevance for us all at any age. He has a lot of humanity that does not exclude the listener nor promote the singer. And he's all the greater for that. Well done Mr Prine. You are a unique human soul out there for me. You give me hope and make me young again. Well as young as I'm ever going to feel. Cheers
I don't know how many times I've listened to this, but I couldn't count it on ten hands. I passed up the chance to see John a few months before he died, because I didn't want to have to go to the concert alone. Lesson learned.
Saw John play this (my favourite of his) as part of his encore in London Ontario last Saturday. As the song reached it's climax, he dropped his guitar and danced a jig as the audience cheered and screamed. He did it right. Oh Baby, we gotta go now.
How I will choose to remember him. Saw him 27 times over the years and feel like I've lost my True hero. 60 now and he's been my favorite since I was 16.
The girl I love the most in this world turn me on 2 john prine she's gone but I can still listen to his music and think about her with a tear in my eye thank you Mr.price
I've seen Prine a bunch of times and I don't think I've ever seen a better performance than this one. Damn, it just brings tears to your eyes. The best video on RUclips, thanks for posting this.
It makes a whole lot of sense why Dylan said this was his favorite Prine song. From the story to the building jam session at the end, pure bliss!!! R.I.P. John.
This is about the 10th time I've listened to this song since last night. The sheer pleasure you can see in John Prine's face says it all about this performance. The story is wonderfully told, and the guitar interplay -- especially the last 2 minutes -- is just a joy to behold.
Wow. I was very late, too late, to the John Prine party but catching up. I like how he leaves space in his stories for your own thoughts. An amazing performance.
God damn. This is a masterpiece. This is the most sincere and beautiful that those three chords have ever sounded. It's only 3 chords over and over again for almost 10 minutes, but it still feels too short.
Never been to Lake Marie but I know John was very fond of Ireland and we have a few lakes here RIP John in the hard year it was lost my own dad this year John's last song reminds me of him as he was a horse breeder and he knew every blade of grass of the roads and fields God bless them both.
I remember John Prine appearing in N.Y.C. In the village in the mid 1970s . That's when I realized John was special . He must have lived some life to even think of these lyrics & songs ! Lake Marie is one of his greatest ,Along with Sam Stone & the 6:00 o'clock news !
My five year old asked me the other day what blood looked like in a black and white video ..... after I shed a tear and collected myself .... I said "SHADOWS."
As to the lyrics... it's rare when you hear a tune with random, story-like lyrics about people you don't know anything about, and you "get" the song at the emotional level where the facts are all different but you understand what he's talking about. This is a perfect song in that regard...
+Steve Paradiso I have decided that this is just too amazing to actually exist. Therefore, this is arguably the best 10 minutes of music on RUclips that can't possibly be real.
I lived in Chicago. Taught school all day in the city. Went to the Fifth Peg to hear John sing every time he was there. That was my neighborhood. Those were the days.
John Prine understands the chasm that exists between truth and lies in society. He closes the chasm through his lyrics and guitar playing. Lake Marie lifts my spirits. God bless you John. Thank you for your inspiration.
Richamond 2002. I sat beside 3 hells angels during a show and they weeped openly, with me. man, john touched us Mike Pantall and the Hells angels. I knew it would happen one day!
also loved (n' still love) this man..... and yes, will miss him... but I'm feeling that the world is a richer, more delightful place because he gave us his humor, his heart and his grace...
I absolutely love this song, it brings me back to when I first heard it, and every time I hear it, I get those tears and the memories, not bad ones but all the good ones that I got to spend with my Mother, my best friend. My best friend showed me this song when I was a teenager, Thank you and thank you John. Respect.
My dad used to take us swimming here back in the 60s. When he was a kid he used to work at the lake renting boats. John is in our blood...and always will be..
Honestly, has there ever been a better storyteller in the history of music, Prine gets my vote every time. He's like fine wine, the man just gets better with age.
I too grew up just outside of Chicago and had a summer place in Antioch on Lake Marie. The land owners sold our trailer park to the Lake Country Forest Preserve and we were all kicked out in 2012.
I don't know what I will do when Johnny goes, and he will, he is so much the soul of the country and of my generation. We will be left all alone then.......I will miss him so much.......
And I listen to his CD s in my car everyday to forgot to add that I am so happy that I got to see him in concert he is the most awesome person ever he really gets me out of my depressive emotions I just wish he was still here so I could see him again in concert it was a sad day when he left this world

God bless John Prine. My every last thought is with him and all of America during this unimaginable crisis. It's real, people. Self-isolate, for god's sake.
He's better off now and you need to get out of the house. Self isolate, really. Did you do that this past winter when the flu killed over 200. 000 Americans alone. Oh John told me to tell you to THROW YOUR CNN TV OUT The WINDOW AND TAKE A WALK.
Peaceful waters, a fair wind at your back, a cocktail in your hand, a cigarette 9 miles long, a guitar and a rock band... Rest easy and entertain the hell out of those good folks in heaven. You are amazing grace.
Thank G-d, John gave up being a postman and picked up a guitar. The world is a better place for his body of work. I am pleased that he has always kept the memory of Steve Goodman alive.
It's hard for me to listen to this without it bringing tears to my eyes. I saw this exact tour and was sitting between two of my best friends, man that was something.... within 2years I lost both of them to suicide... it wasn't time for them to go , both were 53 years old and couldn't cope with the world and people changing around them. Don't let alcohol and pills destroy everything you put together your whole life, ask for help , I wish they would have asked me. This song is a haunting reminder to me of lost friends and good times spent with them by peaceful waters......
I was turned on to John in 1979, Prime Prine, loved it. I play guitar and for the last 30 years played most of the songs on that album. I'd never seen him perform but 2 years ago I had the chance and I took it. Knowing he was 30 years older I thought he may have lost a step or two....wrong. The man was amazing, he and Jason Wilber, played all of Prime Prine and closed with this song O-I-O-I-O I loved it. This was on of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Don't miss him.
"ahhhhh baby ..this is good..... give god a guitar, and this is what you would get....." +1 Possibly my favorite song ever....always gives me shivers up my spine. Don't know how he does it. I would give my right arm to see him live singing this.
Listened to this song for 1st time on my 40th birthday and I had a few tears for those gone before, or was that for those 40 years, a song with so many themes, depends on the day you listen to it.
I've seen John Prine 6 times I tool all 4 of my young adult children to see him this last time they grew up listening to him we had a blast. My kids just love him they know all his songs. Thanks for your time.. and thanks for the tune-age.
I am 17 years old and John Prine is my favorite songwriter. I started listening to him at a very early age. Back in the 90s, my mom would play his CDs in the car and this was my favorite song. I remember really getting into the story and singing all the words (this was my first time singing). Thank you for this video.
Mason Frey you have wonderful taste and your Mom must too. You're lucky to have such great musical influence. John Prine's songwriting is truly amazing. Keep and open mind to all genres of music and. stay cool dude!
John Prine can write a song that brings out a deep, rich melancholy feeling like few others - possibly with the exception of Leonard Cohen or Townes Van Zandt.
It`s been two years already, since our dearest John left us to be in heaven. I surely believe and know that John found his two wonderful girls "Elizabeth" and "Sweet Marie" live again playing at "Lake Marie" peaceful waters forever. No wonder Dylan said that this is his most favourite ever John`s song. RIP forever John Prine. 22/4/22
Me a kinda rock fan. When I first heard John jeez I was stunned..saw him . Lots of tines in glasgow scotland . Only one of my pals got him. Me I loved him.
These days I live in Austin but this song brings me home. Thanks John.
I would consider being a bruised orange a compliment. And I took John's advise when I was younger. We moved to the country ,had alot of children, fed them all peaches, and let them find Jesus on their own.
i am gonna play this song for all my buddies who say country music sucks, after hearing this song there is no way they will still not like country
My 3 yr old daughter asks me all the time to "play peaceful waters Daddy" she recognizes it after two strums on the guitar every time it comes on. We started listening to it when she was a tiny baby and had a lot of trouble sleeping, but John would soothe here to sleep every time. Wonderful story, thank you
Sure is a beautiful song. Especially this version.
Amen ✌❤
Scott Saathoff thank fucking god for Johnny Prine

I am a marie too but was always called my middle name.
Lot of great folk music over there. Corries are Scottish but still, worth a listen if you haven't.
Oh old friend I sincerely hope you’re standing besides peaceful waters right now. RIP John and thank you for the memories.

Jim Duddleston I cooked Italian sausages for dinner on Tuesday and they sure were sizzling. It was sadly fitting too

takes me back when my brothers were alive and we would listen to this awesome music. Oh the memories
:)
Please don't ever remove this one. It's my favorite version of this great song.
One of my favorite songs to play. One of the coolest songs ever written. Peaceful Waters
Ahh, dammit. John, I miss you already. Your songs helped in the bad times and the good. None other like you. thanks for everything
I absolutely love this song, it brings me back to when I first heard it, and every time I hear it, I get those tears and the memories, not bad ones but all the good ones that I got to spend with my Mother, my best friend. My best friend showed me this song when I was a teenager, Thank you and thank you John. Respect.
So heavy, thinking of you standing by those peaceful waters dear John. RIP you wonderful, beautiful man.
Got to see him for the last time in Charleston, SC. This song closed the show. So special.
My dad used to take us swimming here back in the 60s. When he was a kid he used to work at the lake renting boats. John is in our blood...and always will be..
:)
RIP, Mr. Prine. You left a lasting musical legacy. Much appreciated, sir.
Honestly, has there ever been a better storyteller in the history of music, Prine gets my vote every time. He's like fine wine, the man just gets better with age.
First saw john Prine at the Earl of Old Town, in Chicago. After hearing his first song I became a lifelong fan.
John is a national treasure!
Rest In Peace, John. Thank you for all the many songs you've shared with us for so many years.
John Prine songs always make me smile. I'm smiling listening to Lake Marie.....but with tears streaming down my face. R.I.P. John!
I grew up outside of Chicago and had the pleasure of seeing him many times when we were both younger. He introduced me to Steve Goodman
David Yoho Great.
Good on you David, such an honor! Steve was the other song writer who helped drag my head toward the "light" and helped me learn to live my life.
+George Kovacs lets just listen to the music!
+Dawn Fynewever John Prine is my favorite musician. except for the other ones that i love!
Damn....Damn....such a treasure.....blue collar genius. Like everyone here, I needed to hear this. Take care everyone.
As soon as I saw the news, I had to hear this song.
My favorite John Prine song - and this version is my favorite. Not ready to lose him.
😢
He's better off now and you need to get out of the house. Self isolate, really. Did you do that this past winter when the flu killed over 200. 000 Americans alone. Oh John told me to tell you to THROW YOUR CNN TV OUT The WINDOW AND TAKE A WALK.
That lead guitar player is outstanding.
My condolences to the families you're in my prayers and thoughts you will be greatly missed, thanks for sharing your tand music with us
Peaceful waters, a fair wind at your back, a cocktail in your hand, a cigarette 9 miles long, a guitar and a rock band... Rest easy and entertain the hell out of those good folks in heaven. You are amazing grace.
Thank G-d, John gave up being a postman and picked up a guitar. The world is a better place for his body of work. I am pleased that he has always kept the memory of Steve Goodman alive.
AGREED 100%
That’s easy for you to say. I haven’t got mail in 40 years. Priiiiiiiine!!!!!
RIP Had to laugh ‘cause I don’t wanna cry no more.
Steve G-dman
"the singing mailman"
"give god a guitar, and this is what you would get....."
Said it better than I ever could.
How Sad...Thank You for Sharing. My Sympathies
So sorry for your loss, my friend. Such a beautiful song to remember them by. Let light perpetual shine upon them.
Makes me cry too. Just became a widower from cancer and this song and the band are too beautiful to bear.
We can always try to help the ones we love, whether they accept our help is up to them we extend the hand and hope they grab on .
❤️
I was turned on to John in 1979, Prime Prine, loved it. I play guitar and for the last 30 years played most of the songs on that album. I'd never seen him perform but 2 years ago I had the chance and I took it. Knowing he was 30 years older I thought he may have lost a step or two....wrong. The man was amazing, he and Jason Wilber, played all of Prime Prine and closed with this song O-I-O-I-O I loved it. This was on of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Don't miss him.
"ahhhhh baby ..this is good.....
give god a guitar, and this is what you would get....."
+1
Possibly my favorite song ever....always gives me shivers up my spine. Don't know how he does it. I would give my right arm to see him live singing this.
i agree, i grew up on his music.. Well said, give god a guitar and this is what ud get...
AMEN
Listened to this song for 1st time on my 40th birthday and I had a few tears for those gone before, or was that for those 40 years, a song with so many themes, depends on the day you listen to it.
Just think...this is just one of his best poems. Thanks John.
I hope 8 years later, you still listen. Xo
Mason Frey you have wonderful taste and your Mom must too. You're lucky to have such great musical influence. John Prine's songwriting is truly amazing. Keep and open mind to all genres of music and. stay cool dude!
Wonderful!!

John Prine can write a song that brings out a deep, rich melancholy feeling like few others - possibly with the exception of Leonard Cohen or Townes Van Zandt.
Yup !
Richard Thompson too, best damn songwriters ever
I say that Cat Stevens belongs in that group, as a hell of a good songwriter.
Yeah. But he's in good company. Some men are just special. Angels among us.❤
