    What a great guest! You guys have to get him back asap as this segment was far too short considering the situation Canada is in at this time. He mentioned Jason Kenny who just started a great immigration system and it was thrown on the scrapheap after the Liberals took power. Jason Kenny who was the immigration minister leading up to the 2015 election commented on what would happen with our border when Trump got elected. It seems a mass uncontrolled invasion is headed our way as deportations are started. Jason Kenny would be a great guest if you can get him to comment on immigration matters.

This show and Michael Campbell's Money talks are not just entertaining but educational even for old guys like me and can help me make better financial decisions. Young people should spend more time and start at an earlier age educating themselves in finance and economics or at least take a greater interest by listening to smart people more often. Not movie stars, pop stars and other media influencers all over the internet who offer zero insight or substance at all.

    I totally agree with him, BUT there is on problem: we don't HAVE ANY JOBS FOR HIGH SKILLED PEOPLE! We don't have a shortage of engineers... Or Lawyers.. Or Scientists... The shortages are in the medical field, and I'd rather see more local people trained in that then having me pay taxes in Canada to be treated by a doctor trained in Pakistan or Afganistan.

    • @stevegaspar5191
      @stevegaspar5191 Месяц назад

      My doctor is from Africa and is excellent so it makes no difference to me at all. And it shouldn't. These skilled types of immigrants should be fast tracked into Canada. If you have looked around the desirability of Canada as a place to move to has been going downhill pretty fast as of late. Every country in the world wants these people. I am not planning on leaving myself but for these types of skilled people there are better options overall of places to live. How about the USA midwest? Low cost of housing, lower taxes, better weather, higher net incomes etc. Medical people get free healthcare in America too without dying waiting for months for treatment. Check out housing in some of these places and the salaries - why would someone choose unaffordable and overtaxed Canada?

    • @DanMaxe24

    38:40 Keith, brother, you need to look up how duties and tariffs work. You have it backwards. If someone from the US buys Canadian lumber and it has a duty, the Canadian company doesn't pay it. The US company pays it - it's a tax paid by the US company to the US government.
    I'm amazed you've never encountered a duty before from buying something internationally, but here's how it works. Let's say you buy a fancy latex mattress made from all natural rubber trees shipped out of Sri Lanka. You buy it online, pay the company, they ship it, and from their perspective the transaction is done. It arrives in Canada and gets hit by the Canadian government with an duty of $200, let's say. The courier covers it, deliver the mattress to you, and then a month later send you a bill for $200 plus their own fee. The net result is I'm down $240 more than expected, the Canadian government gets $200, and the international courier gets $40 for their fee. The Sri Lanka company didn't even know anything happened, other than I'm less likely to want to buy from them again.
    I only point it out because you seem to have the same confusion as Trump that foreign companies pay tariffs and duties. Instead, it's much more accurately thought of as an extra consumption tax (eg. GST, PST) that's only applied to imports and paid by the receiver.

    • @SpiritOfTheLaw

      Yeah that's a pretty big hit to any confidence in Keith's opinion. You can discuss potential pros and cons of tariffs, but who the cost of tariffs falls on is pretty much economic fact and if he doesn't get that right that's pretty amateur.

    • @maddoxxie
      @maddoxxie Месяц назад +1

      I think he knows how international tariffs work. What he means is that canada get hit by those duties, in the way of exports volume.
      Since products from canda will be more expensive for US users they will order less, thus reducing candian exports

    • @Casey-qm1nd
      @Casey-qm1nd Месяц назад

      @@maddoxxiebingo. Short term pain as consumers pay higher prices, but you get the long term benefit of bringing back the good paying manufacturing jobs. It was the reverse before, consumers saw cheaper prices on goods as the manufacturing base was hollowed out. Classic, trading short term gains for long term pain. If you look at where those manufacturing jobs were shipped to, the ones doing those jobs had an increase in standard of living, and better quality lives.

I hope Keystone is a priority for him although the market would dictate whether Keystone is feasible or needed anymore. I believe most of the oil would be headed to US refineries and exported and this creates American jobs plus brings in tax revenue for the US government let alone profits for the oil companies.

    Regarding Keith's comment about US tarrifs would make prices cheaper for Americans... Have to disagree with that logic. If US imposes 10% tarrifs across the board on imports (which they won't as Trump is simply trying to get a better deal being the negotiator he is) Canadian exporters would likely have to raise prices 10% to America to cover increased costs. Think of Canadian exporters with 3-5% margins. They wouldn't operate at a loss. My point is that increased costs are always passed onto the consumer in the end. In this case the US consumer.

    • @MrLIVELINESOLUTIONS
      @MrLIVELINESOLUTIONS Месяц назад

      The point of tariffs is to gain leverage in negotiations. You're correct that exporters couldn't operate at a loss, for long. Those jobs will go to the USA if terms aren't met.

    • @Casey-qm1nd
      @Casey-qm1nd Месяц назад +1

      It's about the long term vision of bringing back good paying manufacturing jobs to America. You won't see the full effects overnight, it is a lengthy process. In the short term Americans are going to pay higher prices, and in the long term they will benefit by having a much stronger manufacturing base. It is considered a national security threat when the US is so heavily reliant on other countries for their goods. Particularly countries like China where there are a lot of tensions

    • @Stormshfter

      It's about making imported products more expensive for American consumers so that American companies can compete. Just like the softwood lumber agreement, they made Canadian product so expensive that Americans bought the shitty domestic pine.

    I think it's important to remember Trump's plan to impose tariffs on all imports, which will also likely lead to retaliatory tariffs on exports from the US. This is not stimulative at all for the US, and it's even worse for Canada. I think it's very hard to predict where the US economy is heading, but it would be wrong to feel confident about a big bull run in the US economy. Also, with the US deficit going up under Trump, that will put pressure on the USD.
