Blaziken is actually my favorite gen 3 starter, and overall I like the gen 3 pokemon designs for their vibrant colors. I remember pulling both Delcatty and Blaziken from the many, many Power Keepers booster packs I spent many weekly allowances on when I was little. What a funny coincidence that they used to actually be good in the TCG scene, I just loved the pretty sparkly background on Delcatty and the gorgeous golden reverse holo colors the Blaziken had.
I honestly think gen 3 designs as a whole are fine.
The anime at the time looked a bit flat to me but I think the animation industry as a whole was figuring out how to transition to digital.
I feel you. I was a gen 1’ner too. gen 1 & 2 feel “complete”. It’s like there was initially never intended to be anything after Gen 2.
But honestly I gotta say, there are some modern designs that I have learned to appreciate over time. At first I was dismissive over anything pokemon after Gen 2. (I still am to some extent). With Gen 5 probably being the worst offender.
That said there’s some designs like the Piplup or Fletchling line, I can appreciate. These ned designs are very hot or miss. More often than not it is miss. But here and there they do put out some good ones. But I definitely feel you.
I don't hate Blaziken, but I can see why you and others don't like the design. I remember hearing in a DYKG video a while back that Blaziken was purposely designed to be ugly (I don't remember the reason why) so that checks out.
Lmao gen 3 designs are peak. I dont know how anyone could think they're flat. Also Ken Sugimori did Pokémon designs at least until gen 4.
