How to make monkey bars

- In this video I make a set of monkey bars from some 175mm X 175mm tanalised gate posts, that are 2.75M long. For the monkey bars themselves I used some 20mm stainless steel round bar, which was scrap metal shafts from some old conveyor wheels that I removed from a factory. You can use your imagination for your steel bars, perhaps some 20mm mild steel, or some re-bar (not sure if that will work or not). This is a very heavy unit, once it is assembled, so it will definitely take 2 people to lift it up. If you are wondering why, I chose such large pieces of timber, it is because they were the only timbers I could get that were long enough from my local supplier - www.foxtimber....
This is the first video in a set of three, the other videos will be uploaded in the next few weeks.

Absolutely, it must have weight 200KG
Thanks for the comment
It looks like summer has finally arrived!
I hope everyone has a great Sunday 😉
I should have added where I bought the timber from. I ordered this on a Bank holiday weekend and it was delivered on the Tuesday. Absolutely brilliant service from here- www.foxtimber.co.uk/
@@ultimatehandyman Use a soap on wood screws or a dish washing liquid ,it will go much easier. This is a soft wood but for hard woods like oak a little bit of soap and a correct size pilot hole means a lot.
Nice job, very well made, I’m sure your grandchildren will enjoy it, Regards from Down Under.
Thank you very much!
Good project, hope the monkeys enjoy it! I remember the sandpit build, time flies!
Me too, They did play in the sandpit a few times 😂
To be honest, they have not stopped playing on the monkey bars and swings- they love it 👍
You are not kidding about the time!
Thanks for the comment
Bloody hell Chez, I have seen Military assault courses with equipment that isn't that tough! lol.
It was all I could get, that was in long enough lengths. Even then I had to extend the gate posts!
Thanks for the comment
OMG, that's hilarious. Exactly what i thought. Super safe i guess.
Nice one, am looking to build a pull up, dip station to workout and this has given me some great ideas as always, many thanks
Good stuff! I'm glad the video has given you some ideas 👍
No wonder your back was knackered 😬.👍
Yeah, I'd been in the wars that week LOL
I was asleep in bed and suddenly I awoke with a pain in my stomach, I did not know what was wrong at that moment, but after unloading the gate posts, it went worse - so I knew it was muscular, so then I could relax!
I managed to make the monkey bars, but there was no way I could move them on my own, as the whole thing must weight approx 200KG
After installing the posts me and Josh lifted it into position, bit by bit 😂
That was the bit that knackered my back, but after a few days it went fine again 👍
I'm now fit as a fiddle- until I injure myself in my sleep again!
Awesome idea for a sandpit. Thx for your effort in all your content.
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment 👍
Just highlights the importance of having the right tools for the job. I think you should film a fourth video Chez. I'm sure all your subscribers would love to see you swinging across the bars... I know I would...! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I wish I could do that, but my shoulders are knackered from years at the gym (plus I'm 16 stone) 🤣
By Eck 400mm screws! That's what you call making sure it's stuck together. Never in my life have I seen 400mm screws 👍
The first time I used them was for the sandpit. They are excellent to be honest.
Thanks for the comment
Where did you get these extra long screws from?
@@lukek4516 I bought mine from a company called Aitch in Blackpool, but they are widely available on eBay etc.

Good work mate 👍
Thanks 👍
Great video, a great many ideas running through my head now I've watched it all start to come together. Wish I my brother had a sizeable enough garden to put one of these up, the babby would love it... I'm on reduced hours at work atm, 3 days/week, cost cutting. If anyone in Midlands wants help, hit me up, I'd be happy to lend my hands, tools and time free of charge to help build some good karma and keep me busy for when I'm full time again lol Westmidlands, UK 🇬🇧 thanks again for the great video mate
Good job as usual u/ handyman, I am enclide to over engineer such things a tad but I put it down to working in a quarry as a maintence fitter, keep up good work.
Thanks Mike 👍
A dab of grease on those screws will make it easier. Nice project.
Normally the impact driver can drive in those screws, I think it might have been hitting a knot.
Thanks for the comment 👍
What a great job, fantastic, well done. Looking forward to watching you a couple of one arm pull-ups in the next vid 😂.
Ha Ha, even when I was in great shape in my 20's I could not do one arm pull ups. Now I'm out of shape and fat, I have no chance 😂
Now that you have monkey bars in your backyard i hope it will attract many monkeys to your yard ! I tried to build a bird house once when i was a kid but all i got was wasps.
😂
Looking at the size of those timbers you are not lying when you say you have over engineered 😉
Good screws not breaking when using the Hilti!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice build.
Thanks!
Nice job as always. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job, great video
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, that's somewhat overkill, but very nice! Where did you get the stainless steel bars?
Edit, read the description, how did you find a factory where you can pull material from???
I used to work there (for many years)
It was going in the scrap, so I got a pass out chit from my boss.
The engineering department were great like that 👍
Nice project - more like this, please!
Thanks John,
There will be a couple more videos, showing how to set the posts and then put it all together.
I'll have to think of some more garden projects
Thanks for the comment 👍
Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the comment 👍
How do you stop the bars turning when gripped?
They are a tight fit in the holes, also the plastic pipe is a tight fit on the stainless steel bars, so there is no rotation!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Was planning something similar but because of long lengths of timber was thinking to use 2 lengths of 2x6 ( available in 4mtr plus ) screwed together to make 4x6 . Should still be strong ?
Yes, that should be fine.
You just have to use what is available in your area 👍
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
A note to the bars:
The inside ("solid") contributes surprisingly little to rigidity or structural strength. Usually steel pipes would do just fine. Just in case someone would want to build another one.
Thanks for the comment 👍
That ICI jacket is a few years old! That said, I've still got some of my old CEGB stuff😳
Yeah, I think it's about 30 years old.
You can probably tell from watching my videos that I spend all my money on tools, rather than clothes 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
hi thanks for your video.
Thanks for watching 👍
I would gladly come for a play on them monkey bars... if they are not being used...:)
And you could always rent it out to them army lads based at holcombe moor..:)
a killer them 400mm screws... impact driver meltdown :)
N x
🤣
Normally the impact can drive the screws with ease, but I think it was hitting a knot.
The 3/4 inch drive Milwaukee impact wrench certainly has enough torque though!
Thanks for the comment 👍
I hope you weather the upcoming materials shortage, sounds like it could be a real problem
Yeah, increasing prices = Inflation 👍
Keep your eye on commodities, they have all shot up, apart from silver (which is still relatively cheap)
Overkill...But really nice!
I just used what I could get at the time, without having to wait for deliveries etc.
Originally I tried Howarth timber and Travis Perkins, but they make it really difficult for people to even get a price- never mind get the stuff delivered quickly.
Thanks for the comment
didnt even know screws came that lenght
Me neither, until about 6 years ago when I built a sandpit for the kids using railway sleepers.
Thanks for the comment
👍
Pity were were not installing this, now summer is here 👍
@@ultimatehandyman I know brilliant weather
monkey bars they will hold king Kong 🐵
👍
Wish our council would make stuff like that for outdoor fitness but they are useless
Funnily enough, the kids were bugging me to take them to a nearby park. The round about was absolutely useless, I think there was no bearing installed!
Swings were missing and had not been replaced etc.
I think I might be making a few more bits now!
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman I had a trip to a backwater small village in Eastern Europe a year or so ago and they had a brand new callisthenics massive work-out station with all the bars. Its no wonder the vast majority population in England are unfit
@@zeez9053 That reminds me- I need to build a gym at some point. There are a lot of gyms, but the good ones are a 20 minute car journey away.
Thanks for the comments
Could have used 4x6 instead of 6x6 or 8x8. Otherwise, well done
👍
🤘🤓🤘🇬🇧
Thanks Wayne 👍
Never trust a man who vacuums his wood shavings after every hole.
😱
Most houses aren't even built that skookem.
Yeah, I guess it will last.
I wanted it solid, as I might add to it in the future, such as a slide etc.
Thanks for the comment
I used to make monkey bars for the kids. I used cocoa powder, lecithin, agar, and a little honey.
After eating the monkey bars, the kids would zoom out of the house and climb trees.
😂

Glad you liked it.
