Here's the thing: The concrete will eat away the treated wood over time (something to do with the acidity/alkalinity of concrete). They'll last a lot longer if you wrap the posts with some thin, durable plastic before putting them in the ground and pouring concrete around them. Also, while putting dry concrete into the hole and then adding water works, after a while it disintegrates because it can never be mixed right that way. Just a couple thoughts from the construction guy ... if you want posts that last twice as long.
I promise you that pull up bar will last them the next 20 years I’m a fence contractor it’s not gonna eat away like your saying I tear down fences at are 25+ years old with 4x4s they will be fine
I have wanted an old school bar like we had in the parks and playground decades ago. I ditched that idea when I saw the costs! Then I found your video! Well done camara and narration! I still do OCRs at 66 and you can't have too much grip strength. Pull ups build so many areas that you need to climb over wall and other fun stuff! Thanks for the idea!!
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! OCRs sound like a ton of fun! We would love to try that someday. If you’re looking for a low cost solid build, this is the ticket. We’ve been using it hard all summer and wouldn’t change anything about the build! We love it! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
great video, i love doing pull ups, just got into it in 2023 and i'm doing better every month. i was just thinking about my pull-up workout that i have done today and your video came up
Thank you! Same here! It took me awhile before I could even do one and it’s been fun getting new PRs every now and then! Really wanna get a muscle up one day! 💪 Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Looks good! I would have went straight to the hardware store to get the right size socket. Probably would have taken longer depending on how far a store is to you but at least you have the socket for next time. Edit: Now do a dip bar. Maybe you can add on to what you got. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! Probably would have taken me the exact same amount of time to run to the hardware store. I couldn’t decide! Haha A dip bar would be sick. Definitely considering it! Thanks for watching! 💪
I’m looking to building one with pure steel, similar to the ones you see at the parks. I have all the calisthenics equipment I need in my home. The pull bar is so I can add my Olympic rings on them with the straps.I need one that is nice and solid. No shanking or wobble. If anyone has any suggestions please add to my comment. This will be my first project.
I would make a little step for Katie to climb on. Use one mounting end piece with 4-6" long threaded pipe on both ends. On other side use " pipe cap". Screw it at around 16" above the ground. You can screw it to front or back of the post, so you will never hit it when you swing.
That's awesome. I think I'll make my very own backyard pull-up bar instead of spending hundreds for a metal stand on amazon. Thank you for convincing me!
We’re stoked to hear that! A homemade one costs way less and will definitely be sturdier! Plus it’s way cooler IMO! 🤙 Thanks for watching and best of luck with the build!
great job! can't decide if I will build it that way or build it slightly stronger with the bar running THROUGH the posts. My personal trainer said pulll ups you should do them like all the time
Thank you! We considered building it that way as well but weren’t sure how to keep the pole from spinning. Pull ups are such a great exercise. We use this thing all the time! Hope you end up building one! Thanks for watching!
@@NickandKatieMTBNice project. I’m going to put the bar through the wood, and thread the end pieces on the reverse way. I will then screw them onto the wood from the outside of the posts.
Question: Will this bar be strong enough for weighted pullups? I am 200 lbs and I am doing pullups with +30 lbs and I want to eventually do pullups with +200. How strong is this bar?
In my personal opinion I think the bar will be plenty strong and could withstand the weight of several hundred pounds. Katie and I both hung on it which would be roughly 300 pounds. I cannot say for certain what the limit would be. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Easier way. Dig the holes, set and plumb posts. Pour concrete dry into holes and tamp in layers with poles vertical and parallel. Bring concrete to about 2 inches from surface. Pour water on concrete and cover with dirt, pour more water to wet dirt. Leave 2 days. Drill level holes thru posts for bar, then drill 1/4" holes thru post AND bar the other way. Use long 1/4" bolt thru to pin and stop rotation and secure bar from sliding out (only need to do one side) Use 3/4" or 1" pipe your choice. Tape pipe to aid grip if needed. Drill additional holes at different levels as needed.
how much would them wood posts cost? im definitely going to build this next spring since im getting better at pullups therefore i am looking forward to get the muscle up. im currently doing pullups on an old rusted pipe part of an old grapevine structure and im afraid it's gonna collapse
Somewhere between $30-$40 for both the 2 posts. That’s an awesome goal! I want to learn muscle ups too! I definitely recommend building one. Been loving mine and wouldn’t change anything about it! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
It feels very sturdy! From the research I did it seems like 4x4s would wiggle like crazy and 6x6s would probably be overkill. So I’m stoked on the 4x6s 🤙
3 months later, you two should be up to around twenty or more. The longer you hand, pull, switch positions and hand distance, you'll get way stronger. Have to push up if you are going to pull up as well, you'll be lopsided if u don't
Yes, we train every muscle group equally. 💪 We're happy to have this pull up bar because it makes back training possible at home. We also have a gym membership, so this is great for filling in the gaps in our training! Thanks for watching!
I suppose that'll work.. but that is one crooked post! Next time, one hole/post at a time and pull a string line across the faces of the posts to square them up.
Thanks for the suggestion. The posts are actually perfect, they might just appear crooked because of the fish eye lens on our GoPro. We used a level to make sure they were perfect before the concrete set.
Yes that’s what I got aswel . The over all size is 1 and a quarter inch on the outside . Also how wide did u have the holes ? I just dug mine . At around 10 inches wide
@@no-one-qd1li yes, that’s another way of doing it but we prefer this method of attaching it! It’s simple and keeps the pipe from spinning. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching! 💪
@@no-one-qd1li yeah you definitely could do it that way. I would also plug the ends of the pipe with something then so that water doesn’t get in and sit inside the pipe.

We did this and the galvanized steel pipe broke after two years.. luckily no one got injured. The pipe broke where it's threaded in both sides.

Help!! If I didn't want to to the concrete route, perhaps I Wanna move it. I might be screwed???? What u think
You would have to build some sort of base in place of the concrete.

5 feet 👍👍
4 months later, was 1 inch a good size?
Hmm tough question. I might go a touch smaller if I was going to redo it. That being said it’s totally up to the individual!
I do get good grip training from this size though.
@@NickandKatieMTB I appreciate a quick response! I might be building mine tomorrow!
@@fightingback7185 of course! That’s exciting! Best of luck! 🙌
Standard pullup bar is 1.25 so this bar is slightly larger. A .75 inch would be slightly smaller so would depend in hand size.
why screws? I'd use nails for the tensile strength
You can use either option! I prefer screws!
wouldn't the wooden logs just ruin in rain?
It’s treated lumber. It’s used for foundations and other projects that make contact with the ground.
configuring the terrain = terraforming

How much did it cost?
Between $100 and $150. I had some of the materials on hand and I got some on sale so it will vary! Hope that helps! 👍
will that pipe rust?
It’s galvanized, so it has a protective layer to prevent rust. Eventually someday it will inevitably rust, but it can be easily replaced. 👍
