Walk Through Garage Door

- A demo of a garage door that I modified to included a walk through service door. Handy for buildings that don't have a standard service door near the garage door. Instead of opening the garage door to walk inside (and subequenly let out all the heat or cool) you can now quickly get in and out through the smaller door in the garage door. (This is an update from the May 2010 version in order to remove the words "Walk-Thru" to avoid copyright protection from a company that makes garage doors like this.)
Todd I thought I was the only one who thought of this idea…l love it!
Man, wished you lived by me! Thanks for sharing!!!
EXCELLENT job!! Thanks for posting.
Great video and idea, thanks for sharing Todd!! I would have loved to see the step by step of the making. Can you share the website links for the materials you used for the piano hinges and the L-shape aluminum channel? or the specifics for both.
I love this, what a fantastic solution for a problem that many garage owners w/o man doors have. More importantly, if you are utilizing every inch of wall space in your garage, who wants to add a door and loose bench or shelving space, I'd much rather have a door like that, right through the garage door. It looks great for a proof of concept and with a little polishing, I think you could easily sell kits for around $300 and you'd have a line of customers waiting. Most modern 1 or 2 car garage doors have 4 vertical 48" panels and I bet you could come up with a "universal" kit for the DIY'er. (or sell your plans ) Great work.
Would sure like to see an update on this door or just left like it was and works fine?
Seven years since i commented on doing this job and i still haven't done it🙂
Where can I buy this garage door modified to included a walk through service door kits
A google search brought me here as I am looking for this very thing. Is there anything like this commercially available?
Good video. Thank you. Now some companies offer such doors on the garage doors.
Great Project - I admire your resourcefulness and ingenuity!
Could code allow pins on the folding door with alignment points on the floor. Alignment would be the main focus for sure but the end product could be a win. A second lock would come into play.
Awesome Door. Here are my suggestions since you asked. A thin wide plate bolted across the bottom ( say 4" x 1/4" steel bar) would allow you to reduce the step over to code height and eliminate the bottom Unistrut stiffener. Some kind of interlock is needed for dummies who try to roll up the door with the walkthrough open.
I really like this idea. I have a 30x50 detached shop with 2 garage bays. I live in the south, and plan on adding a mini split air conditioning system to the building to help keep the humidity off my machines to prevent corrosion. Also, in the thick of summer, its almost unbearable to be out in the hot working on anything that requires effort... lol. Needless to say, it's probably not a good idea to cool a space, and let all of the air escape every time I need to enter or exit. A man door (pedestrian door) would be the perfect solution to this. I've searched high and low, and have been unable to find a kit that allows retro fit of a man door to an existing roll up garage door. It stands to reason that this would be entirely possible to accomplish with a little fabrication skills. Anyway, Im thinking about making something similar. Seeing yours lets me know its entirely possible. Thanks for positing this.
any luck? I am looking to do the same exact thing.
@@aaronmindiola8006 Not yet. Still screwing around trying to get AC in the shop.
This exactly what I need. Awesome video. Nice Job in blending this "Walk Through Door" onto the Garage Door. You maintained the Original Garage Door aesthetics.
I'm thinking that the second and third from top are in each other's spots. Usually a roller shaft gets farther from the door as it goes up the door. It looks like the third from top is farther from door than the second one is. But I also can't see for sure from the video. Most hinges are numbered. And the lower numbers go closer to the bottom of the door.
+Justin Bontrager Ah... That could be. It is very possible that this door was not installed correctly before the modifications. This used door was discarded from a previous installation, with missing parts, and then installed by me, a non-professional door installer. It could be that I did not taper out the tracks.
I see it a lot. It's not enough of a difference on that tall of a door to matter. It's just a pain when I go to service them😃
This Door Project is on my Spring To Do List. Will write a review upon completion. Your Video inspired me!
either of you live in NJ that I could hire to do this??
We need this. Have to keep the garage open all day. I'd like a glass garage door though and then a door. Maybe go to a 1 car garage and then frame a door?
Tod can u please send me exact material list! I also got 4panel like u? I seen ur video several yrs.agomy door is 1"&half thick.. thanks ur idea is great!!
Hi Todd , have you done any more of these since 2010?
this is so cool I have to say and just what I need also. The reason for me wanting one is that I want to keep my garage warm in the winter and it it would be a good selling point for you if you decide to manufacture them.
I have not seen anyone put a man door in a garage door as this in my area or anywhere nor on RUclips. This exactly what I'm looking for. How has it held up? I'd like to see more. Please let me know before we start cutting.
Great initial idea. I have plans to do this. I think I will use yours and tweak it for my personal preference. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
Have you made any progress/updates on this? I would like to be able to let my dogs in and out without opening the entire garage (and waking the kids in the morning) as well as have a power-loss solution to still enter the garage to release the opener... the thought being that a snow storm hits while we are away and the generator is inside (along with the shovels and snow blower!).
The proof-of-concept alone may help me talk my wife into letting me cut into the garage... how is this not a commercial product?
-Shawn
It is. Door manufacturers make these to order.
Ok Todd , u ask for an idea for the door step issue? ...im an inventor myself...heres a simple solution for your troubles with local code ordinace ....TRY MAKING THE STEP REMOVABLE OR FOLDED UP OUT OF THE WAY. ...or BUILD THE DOOR ALL THE WAY DOWN.
-Okay man hope it works for you.
Do you guys still do this
Yes. Good eye. It is a 1973 Cardinal RG. I have since then sold it. I now have a B-25 project and several Aeronca projects in the hangar.
Hi
I really liked what you have done here and I have been trying myself but the results aren't as good as yours. Can you please help me out a little?
I couldn't find the panels at home depot. Can you tell me all the things I will need to create a walkthrough door and where I can get them?
Thanks
great video
would be really nice if there was a video with the build and plan so we could replicate your fabulous creation. nobody in the usa sells a kit or plans for this genius design. just a detailed parts list would do the trick
thanks
yea, that would be awesome. I'm actively searching for this now.
Have you made a kit you would sell? I need a pass through on my insulated metal door
Great Job!! I was just wondering if you've got any plans that I could use to make my own. I'd like to give this a try myself.
Thanks
Where did you find the aluminum trim material
Can you send me a kit? I would like to do the same thing on my door
This video was made in 2011. Is it possible you're selling these doors now? If you are, do you have a website link?
We are selling these doors, it seems the uploader only did this as a personal project. You can visit our website at portes ararat dot com
I think you did an awesome job
I'm in desperate need to do this in my existing space as the front space of my garage is a gallery. I built out the interior space into three section and the front is to be a gallery. It's fine in the summer since we just open the door for passing by customers but in the winter it's not sufficient for business. Can we get in contact so that i could get more information on your pass through... You're the only guy that had created a retro fit concept to existing doors and it's amazing!
Here is a video of it being done by professionals. ruclips.net/video/_0atkrxkopY/видео.html
Fantastic how is the door working? I want one and am asking a friend who is a carpender for a price.
Why do you have to have the 4" piece at the bottom?
I think you should take orders and sell them.
Or even better;Leave the gate opened.Local cats and dogs need place to sleep😼
How about an update?
Very nice congratulations! do you have another video? How to do it step-by-step ?
We have a accelerated fabrication process on our channel if you are still interested.
Hi Todd ,
Do they sell the frame kits for this walk through garage door ? I am living in Toronto, Canada, any clues is very much appreciated.
Tai
Did you find out if there are retail kits available?
No I did not , thanks ! Still checking around.
I need thus asap 😫 no company would do it in CT
What state are you in.
Great Documentary with fine detail on how to do this job..... I have nowhere to cut an exterior wall to get outside and this garage door vid just fixed my problem......Thanks :).
Did you install the hinges before the cutout?______
I have a walk thru barn door that I want to add a walk thru door... any ideas?
I would like to follow your idea and do this project. I understand the lip to keep door in place when garage door is up. But I don't understand the method used to keep door in one piece to open and close when garage door is down. Do you have plans for sale to build this door?
Hi Tom123mike. I do not have plans for the door. Perhaps I will do that some day. Currently I am Director of the Aeronca Aircraft History Museum so I don't seem to have any spare time. As for the door... It stays in one piece by the combination of the vertical hinges that keeps the door in the hole and the horizontal hinges that keeps each door panel connected to each other. It has been 3 years since I built that door. Volunteers at the museum use that door as the primary entrance, so it is opened and closed probably 50 to 100 times a day. The only problem with my particular door is that I made it from a cheap wood garage door. Actually, it is not wood. Worse, it is eighth-inch MDF sandwiched over a Styrofoam core. The bolt and screw holes are enlarging, thus making my door sag resulting in the bottom of the door interfering with the bottom door jam. When I do this again I will probably use a steel insulated door from Copay from Home Depot. Perhaps then I will draw up the plans and instructions.
+Todd Trainor Hey todd wondering if you came up with any plans for this pass-thru garage door. Looks awesome.
Ingenius! I balked at the attempt since my mind couldn't wrap around the engineering involved. It's very inviting now. You think this can this be accomplished with a 20 foot wide metal, insulated garage door?
It would be a challenge but it has been done in bigger doors already ;)
AWESOME job....MOPAR 4 EVER.
Great job, Todd !
Like Tom, I am purplex on how you are able to operate the walk through service door as one unit, when in fact they are multiple sections to the whole garage door. Would you please care to share with us. I recently acquired a quote for my garage door replacement with a walk through door and the manufacturer wants $4200.00 plus labor. To me that is a little too high and that's why I am looking to do it myself. Thank you, Elias.
The vertical hinges hold the sections
+Soyeldominicano - re:purplex, either that's some new kind of building material, or something you should see a doctor about.
Great video
I also want to say that many split level houses do not have door access. If you could patent this process and get the materials cheap, I'd think you've just created a business!
BRILLIANT!!!! I NEED THIS
I am curious if you ever redid the door with upgraded materials? But either way how much was the cost on the new/old project? This is exactly what I have been looking for to do to our house.
I never thought of this idea till I saw a garage door advertisement on the internet few days ago.
Great minds think alike
Nice... Hopefully you went forward with this design...
You rock Todd!! I've wanted something like this for the past 3 years because I do a lot of gardening and find myself going in & out of the garage all the time. We have a single 2 car garage door and what a pain to have to open it all the time!! I reached out to our local contractor to see if he might be interested in doing something like this to our existing door and your video was so helpful!! Any chance you would be willing to come to Long Island, NY and convert our door?? :) Not sure where you live, but we'd pay for your travels and building time! ;) BTW: It's been 7.5 yrs. since you did this and I don't see a follow up video... how did it hold up over time?? :)
I work in the garage door industry and this type of work is our specialty, we are located in Montreal however so I'm not sure about crossing the border to do the work but a kit could be sent. Get in touch with solution garage doors. Good luck :)
Excellent idea. Thanks a lot.
As a garage door installer I can't see this design working on a door that is much wider than this as it seems like you will lose to much strength when cutting the door. Also I couldn't see for sure but I think the end hinges are not put on in the right order unless it's a design of door I've never seen before. I've had customers ask me for this and it scares me to much to try it. 😃
+Justin Bontrager If you are referring to the second-from top hinges on both sides, I agree that it appears that the centerline of the hinge is not lined up with the other hinges in the same row. But that is mostly an illusion because the axle for the wheel is below the hinge pivot. That is not the case with the other outboard hinges where the wheel axle goes through the hinge pivot. I believe that hinge is different here because of the double track (low overhead) door being used.
As for the strength, I agree that cutting out the man-door weakened the garage door panels. So I added U-channel (aka UniStrut, aka electrical SuperStrut) to the top and bottom inside of the garage door. After operating this door daily for the past four year, the door does sag slightly when in the full upright position, indicating that the U-Channel is not able to keep the door completely flat under the weight of the opened door. But the U-channel does spring back into normal position when the door is moved back down to the closed position. As for doing this for customers, I agree that this may not be an ideal solution. For one thing, there are no safely features to lock out the garage door opener from operating when the man-door is open. If the man-door is open when the garage door is raised, it would cause violent and catastrophic damage to the door, of which falling off the track is a possibility. I believe the professionally built solutions (see walkthroughdoors.com out of Ontario Canada) are designed for customer installation and have the proper lock-outs, better strength and durability than my experimental homemade door.
Thank you for your comments. Maybe someday I will improve upon this design.
Justin Bontrager.... I just called Lowe's and a local garage door company to get a door like this installed...no one will do it for resident....Our garage is my husband man cave so this door is needed..
I need this can u please do this for me ?
Nice!
wish the construction was in video.
Great job
Nice job.
How much?
Is that an airplane in that garage??
Nice would love to get one.
I hadn't seen a garage door with a door on it.
not bad for a DIY. Midland Garage Door Mfg. Co. sells walk thru doors.
Hi, Do you know anyone in the Atlanta area who would be able to do this for me ? Thanks.
Know thats awesome.
I like your project, I want to make my own door, you'll have some diagram or method to follow, any advice is good, thanks.
We sell kits for passage doors to be installed on existing doors, your door has to have a thickness of 1 3/4" for it to fit.
@@portesararat4245 any contact info for the kit? Thanks
does anyone make a kit that you can do this with???
Yes, get in touch with solution garage doors in Montreal
The dude is barefoot LMAO
Thanks for reply. Now that you say it it's obvious. Duh
search for WICKET DOORS
Well. You know why I’m here. That’s right. Either I open the garage door or I go all the way through the house. Sadly. My door has windows. And the wife said no. So what’s my solution here..
Got rid of the wife. Lol
Just kidding. She makes more money than me. I’m dumb, not stupid.
A doggy door?
