    "Uh-oh."
"Don't tell me. We're about to go over a huge waterfall."
    "Yep."
    "Sharp rocks at the bottom?"
    "Most likely."
    "Bring it on."
RIP Eartha Kitt. Despite her advanced age, she gave 110% here.
Fun Fact: When the pieces of the bridge fall into the river, the four letters of the word DAMN can be seen falling one by one amongst the individual planks.
Lost In Translation Fact: Pacha's (John Goodman) name means "Earth" in the Incan language. This could refer to his round shape, his green poncho, and/or his down-to-earth personality.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Patrick Warburton improvised when Kronk hummed his own theme song when he was carrying Kuzco (David Spade) in the bag to the waterfall. Disney's legal department had Warburton sign all rights to the humming composition over to them.

Kronk has his own movie in the sequel Kronk’s New Groove, and there was a TV series called The Emperor’s New School in which Kuzco has to go back to high school in order to maintain his title as Emperor. But of course Kronk and Yzma are up to their old tricks again to try to fail him. ❤️💛🖤💜

Yzma was played by Eartha Kitt. She was one of the earliest tv Catwomen, replacing Julie Newmar in the 1960s series when Newmar's schedule got in the way. Kitt was inspired casting, as she was already famous for her purr-like delivery; and, as a woman of color, she was also a huge step forward in casting. Here she is, thoroughly enjoying herself, in this campy series (which I grew up watching): ruclips.net/video/3noB94mx7Ek/видео.html
Therefore, of course, Yzma's ultimate fate is, well, purrrfect.

The only problem with her casting in Batman was that now the suits wouldn't allow the usual sexual tension between her and Batman (because interracial romance was still considered ikky then) which is why they brought in Batgirl (which didn't pan out the way they thought).
Fun Fact: the "Batman 66" comic book series, which was a direct continuation of the campy TV show, used different versions of Catwoman (based on the actresses Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt and Lee Meriwether) in different issues/stories and, like the show, treated them all as the same character, making absolutely no effort to explain why she looked different every time she returned.

@@ScooterBond1970 Very true: the magic of tv, and the suspension of disbelief! You could do that in a show like "Batman", though in the sixties, characters and actors could come and go without explanation (Mission Impossible is one example of this).
I remember being very excited when Batgirl became a regular: I was around 10 years old, and a short, active, fun lady of action whose alter ego was a bookish brunette made me happy.
I liked how, though the suits stepped in and likely underestimated general audience acceptance of the sexual tension, I remember the show itself wrote Kitt's Catwoman as a fun, crafty character whose beauty was acknowledged. There's actually a moment when Batman reminds Robin how beautiful Kitt's Catwoman is.

On of the funniest of the animated Disney films. And for the record (1) This was the first time a woman was depicted as pregnant in a Disney film (2) There was suppose to be a song in this called "Snuff Out the Light" sung by Eartha Kitt but it was removed. It explained her story. You can still listen to it on YT and there is art to the scenes in that song.

Hey glad you liked it! Don't know if you skipped through the song at the end, but give it a good listen, its the one song Sting wrote for the movie that made it though in his voice, after they cut All his othre work out - and then he won the Oscar for it. It's beautiful. thanks for reviewing this one!

Strange coincidence -- this was one of the very first DVDs I bought, maybe 20 years ago, and I recently went through my library and found it was still wrapped! So I opened it and watched it (I do still have a DVD player!). Like you, I had forgotten almost everything about it but found it to be just as entertaining (again) as you did. It was probably the first step in Disney's going with more frantic antics and quick-cut editing, setting the stage for years to come. It's a bit of a shame that it's not more well-remembered alongside all the other Disney animation. This was also one of the last mostly-hand-animated ones before they started incorporating much more CGI in their films.

Lot of drama around this one: Disney originally wanted to do a straight dramatic Aztec/Inca movie, “Kingdom of the Sun”, with a similar “llama” plot, but failed storylines kept disappearing and suspiciously re-appearing over at Dreamworks.
Which brings us to the suspicious question of why Jeffrey Katzenberg claimed Road to El Dorado was a “tribute to Bob Hope and Bing Crosby”, when it would have been perfectly safe to say it was Kipling’s “The Man Who Would Be King”. (Another story idea for KOTS, btw…)

  • @matthewmckinnon-gray9957

Originally this was going to be a musical drama with songs by Sting. However it ran into story problems and eventually the original director was fired. The new director kept the parts the that were working (Kuzco learning humility as a Llama & Eartha Kitt’s Yzma) and cut everything else, turning it into a buddy comedy.

Animated Disney movies weren't usually musicals until 1989, and they mostly stopped being musicals around the year 1999. Their revival around 2009 was a huge deal.

No, the original movies (Snow White, Pinnochio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Jungle Book) were musicals. Some post-Renaissance too, like Home on the Range.
And of course, this was originally supposed to a musical. This is probably the completed Disney movie that came the closest to getting cancelled.
A number of Disney musicals from the old days won best song, including Snow White and Cinderella!

Thanks, Oliver! 🦙 Mark Dindal directed this. 💠 The advisor 'Yzma' was voiced by the late, great Eartha Kitt. I first was aware of her talent and charisma by her appearances as 'Cat Woman' in BATMAN (1967 through 1968). She also sings a winter holiday hit, "Santa Baby" (1953), which you likely have heard at some point. 🎅 I eventually saw her sing *live* at a bar in New Orleans in late 1990s! 🔸 If you can, catch her in ANNA LUCASTA (1958) someday.

3:56 That's the voice of Piglet.
12:25 I like how he makes 'okay you're not the criminal' seem insulting.
14:00 Aside from Yzma, everybody else who this who wants guy dead is a good guy so they can't just let him die.
18:22 If he hadn't gone back to gloat, he would've been fine.
21:37 That looks like it would taste like lobster, but probably not.
    29:24 Catwoman
Also i guess the fact that Kuzco just turned 18 makes him a little more likable cos he's just a kid that doesn't know how to be an adult yet.

The production of this movie was a complete disaster. It started as a straightforward Prince and the Pauper movie set in the Inca Empire with songs written by Sting. Somehow it devolved into the accidental work of genius we all love. Only the opening song and the song from the end credits remained.

No songs and no romance - that might explain why I like this movie XD I don't mind musicals, but most Disney songs are awful.
One of my favourite details is when Yzma pours her drink in the plant pot and the cactus takes llama shape.
Have you seen Megamind? If not, that'd be a fun reaction.
