Beatles Cavern 1962 Some Other Guy

  • "Some Other Guy" is a rhythm and blues song, written by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller and Richie Barrett. First released as a single in 1962 by Barrett himself, it featured an electric piano, then an unusual sound in pop music. Covered shortly afterwards by Liverpool's the Big Three, the song was a standard in the Merseybeat scene. The song was part of the Beatles' early 62 repertoire, and film footage of The Beatles performing it live is the only known film with synchronized sound showing the group at the Cavern Club. The grainy footage features John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing the song's melody in august, 22 1962. It is also the first film of Ringo Starr as the Beatles drummer, Pete Best having been sacked the week before. At the end of the song, someone in the audience can be heard shouting "We want Pete!" This footage was featured on Anthology, while a BBC live version was released on the album Live at the BBC in 1994.
    Here I´ve intended to show a possible rendition with the same gear they used to play in 1962.
    - Rickenbacker 325 Capri (John)
    - Hofner 500/1 61 bass (Paul)
    - Gretsch 6128 Duojet (George)

    That film clip has always been a mystery to me. The only one of its kind, makes me wonder who made it. It shows multiple angles, so it was edited; it's a production. It's also a good song; better in my opinion than some in Please Please Me or Meet the Beatles. But they never recordered it afterwards. So what's the story of this clip?

    • @thegoose0m1
      @thegoose0m1 2 года назад +24

      Apparently a TV crew came to Liverpool sometime in '62 to do a story on the burgeoning new music scene taking place in Cities in England such as Liverpool. The Beatles were a big part of that scene, so they were professionally filmed for the story. Not sure if it was ever aired at the time, but the priceless footage survived somehow and was eventually rediscovered. "Some Other Guy" was a song they covered back then ( apparently it's not a " Lennon/McCartney original ) and it was also recorded and eventually released on the "Live at the BBC" album.

      @@thegoose0m1 I can remember a John lennon quote where he said nobody could touch them when they played straight ahead rock and roll. In Liverpool the sailors were able to bring back records from the states and the bands got them. The Beatles always went for the B sides of those records. Those live at the BBC albums are pure energy, recorded live for radio, and the song choice is amazing a snap shot of their prefame live sets. Some other Guy was originally recorded by Ritchie Barrett and a lot of Liverpool bands played it. Check out versions by the Big 3 and the Searchers
