i consider myself something of a Greensleeves connoisseur. jazz versions, madrigal versions, christmas versions: i have a fav for each category. Sarah, Chris, and the band take it to a whole new level with this performance. wait for the third time around when it drops into a 7/4 groove. my Decembers will never be the same. there’s a new sheriff in town.
I voted Greensleves to be the song of the last millennium, since it had been sung, played and/or recorded by so many genres of musicians since its birth in the 16th century and it's popularity doesn't ever seem to wane.
H I shall giv ya me personal commentarial view of the item requestory longtime: no hood no robbin, n let the lady D with them green sleeves rest a bit... lez concentrate hour energy to wards Lady Gaga..
Hearing Sarah singing this song gives me a tingle and makes me want to hear it five times in a row. This band slips into a groove and puts a new slant on it. Sarah sings more than just the usual single verse. Double delights ! Hurrah! Vocal harmony with Chris. Triple delights !
Happiest of holidays to all of you at LFH. This year has sucked, but you are living the words of Leonard Bernstein, "This will be our reply... to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly, than ever before." There are times when the music of LFH is the only thing that stands between me and despair. So thank you, from the bottom of my soul.
Wow. Minute 4:50 to 5:16 is just incredible. Chris Thile and the groove they are in is simply amazing. Love the guitarist's (black jacket) reaction/smile in the background. Pure bliss!
Amazing from some of the most talented musicians out there. This version is haunting and truly emotional with that full jazz interlude and an amazing shift in arrangement towards the end. God I love this show!

So beautiful and such grace to update this timeless song. Also said to myself in 60 Minutes voice: "When Mike Elizondo isn't busy making 'Chronic 2001' and 'In Da Club', he enjoys playing 'Greensleeves' in 7/4 on NPR."
Greensleeves has been associated with the Christmas season for some time. The tune has been associated with Christmas at least since 1871 when it appeared in "Christmas Carols New and Old." It appears in "The Hymnal 1982" of the Episcopal Church as the setting of "What Child is This" by William Chatterton Dix (!837-1898).
I wish someday Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood will do a Live From Here, but really making music together with this band.. imagine blending all those sounds.. Gotta watch that before I die.
Cory Wong gets the best seat in the house! Such a tease! They started the 6/8 groove and I'm like okay here's where Cory comes in... Then Chris breaks it down to 7/4 and I'm like okay surely this is where Cory comes in.... :)
Beautiful! I'm so looking up this version. The style, dang! Btw, our voices REALLY blend well together. I'm singing along with you a 3rd part. So cool.

Chris is a genius when it comes to the mandolin, but I do have a problem when he wanders off in another direction which doesn't belong to that particular piece of music. I would love to see Chris live in concert as I love his straightforward mandolin playing BUT i fear I might be disappointed he will veer off to a sort off avant grade direction.
Well if you want a presentation that “belongs to that particular piece of music” then they should be playing on lutes and without amplification since guitars and mandolins in their modern form werent developed until about three centuries after Greensleeves was written and microphones later than that. I believe music should evolve and there is no such thing as a tune, especially one as broadly familiar as Greensleeves, belonging to a particular genre. And if there is, 21st century folk music is not that genre.
Julie Bladel I've seen two Geniuses in my lifetime, Ray Charles and Tommy Emmanuel, so seeing Chris is on my bucket list, but as I'm in the UK it maybe unlikely.
Disappointing. Sounded like the singer had trouble reaching the high notes and her face reflected it. Did not appreciate the jazz interlude - maybe that's me as I don;t care for jazz - but it did not add anything to the piece. Why do musicians feel it necessary to bastardize a classic piece of music? My go to radio station regularly plays the Star Spangled Banner featuring a singer whose range is inadequate to the music and with an arrangement that sounds off-key. Not pleasant. I always change the station when it comes on.
One of the saddest loses from the Covid pandemic is this program. It has left a huge hole in my life.

Hard to believe this was ONLY a year ago. Thank you all for your excellent musicianship and may you rise again!

Can’t belive I didn’t catch this when it aired! I’m breathless! This may be one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
Just beautiful...
Remarkable how they managed to shift this tune into a 7 beat groove and still make it sound natural.
PUT THAT SHOW BACK ON THE AIR!!!

Tout est formidable, tout est harmonie, on frôle la perfection, merci !
always delightful when done by the amazing Sarah Jarosz
I could listen to Sarah Jarosz for days at one sitting. I love you and your music.
Never seen Alex Hargreaves shred like that. Absolutely incredible.
Just so beautiful.
So much about this to love but a sincere "hats off" to that piano solo. Wooo....
Chris and Sarah, you and the band have done it again, bravo!

breathtaking
Oh my gosh, that was BREATHTAKING
Monteleone and Loar. Two of the finest on the planet. What a treat.
that 7/8 groove... Incredible!
Great arrangement. Loved the shift from 6/8 to 7/8.
Mike Kobb where does that shift occur?
jcherw 3:00

Sweet. Y’all caught me. That rocked.
Cory Wong processing Chris' solo at 5:18 is just priceless.
A beautiful evolution of this Christmas classic. Thank you.
What a great upload. Loved it, especially the last part.
Excellent!
Outstanding!!!!
Brilliant arrangement. It got me in the feels ❤️
Awesome! 👏💥🤙
I wish someday Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood will do a Live From Here, but really making music together with this band.. imagine blending all those sounds.. Gotta watch that before I die.
A great rendition of this old song. I loved watching Cory Wong's reaction. He knows what’s going on.
This shot to the top #10 in my winter holidays annual playlist. Stunning arrangement and performance.
Remarquable. Je suis un fan absolu de votre formation, de votre son et de vos arrangements.
Beautiful
FANTASTIC
Beautiful! It's a joy ear both of you!
Ok... wasn’t expecting that, but freakin lovin it ❤️🔥
Live From Here! Yay!!!
I would sign away my immortal soul for the mando to be audible in the mix between 5:03 and 5:09
Agreed! But, still amazing!
*Robert Johnson has entered the chat*
This song hits different in the summertime😗

wow!
1:37 now I want more jazz quartets with violins. This was stunning
wow!!!
Beautiful.
Woah
wow
Virtually never disappointed by Sarah on any musical attribute, the vocals in this one is an exception. Would like to hear her redo.
Wonderful take on the song I voted to be the song of the last millennium!
Wow
woh Hargrave can really do Coltrane on the violin, amaze!
Nice nod to Coltrane’s classic jazz version (FYI Mr Krugman)
Cory Wong only knows how to play "Striped Sleeves".
Cory Wong only knows how to play "Funk Beyond The Call of Duty".
I'm curious how you plan out your content. Either way - Still finding my YT footing!!

Greensleeves has words?
Duh.
!!!
5:17 the face of the guitarist. Just as aghast as me😂
I estimate Sarah's height at 5.3 feet. _I used the base to estimate her height._ *Can anyone do better?*
If I didn't know the words I'd never figure them out from this performance.
So for the G in Greensleeves does she go to high G, as is tradition?
Only a half step above F#.
Had a dream that Barack Obama put this on whenever he got scared about coronavirus
😐🤔😀😆
When Sarah sings, she becomes the sexiest woman alive. Well, 2nd to my wife. We love you, Sarah!
Like a Radiohead bliss-out.
Who plays keyboard??
whoa is that corey wong?
not one person sings all nine course!!!!! :(
way too sober to enjoy this jazz version
Might as well let the pad sing it, too.

Yeah, that avant grade stuff always fails. :/

I would love a recorded version of this. Wonderful.

There are enough musicians out there that stick to known paths. Chris Thile is not for you.

Katie Powers it’s just you
Katie Powers, you sound like a real... well, it rhymes with runt and starts with a c.
"maybe that's me..." You got it ;)
I am entitled to my opinion as is anyone else. And I did not feel the necessity to make an obscene comment about someone else.
@@katiepowers686 I disagreed with your first comment but totally agree with this one!
